yes ! absoulutly right ! im electrician at work but also DJ when i have a time for it and use electronic from my childhood ,it's clear when you make/create music the best is the old boxes/synthesizers why ? simply because no help from computer/software when you play on live ! i laugh a lot (LOL) when some stupid DJ make a mistake on live because laptop go OFF ...

@John Smith imagine when he creat his first album "oxygene" in 1976 (created really in 1975) with a four tracks tape recorder...i understand him so much (im from 1977 and love electronic songs from childhood) when i played fun with a deck cassettes recorder just to change volume , rewinding ,rechange noise ,rewinding ...etc etc etc that's hard , thats need time but glorious after all, now with computer help it's easy for any mothersucker to "make" music but this mother sucker in live i'm curious to see it creat anything.... i'm DJ i use also a software to mixe but never NEVER help of computer like a SYNC touch pffffffff.....im 42 , severals years before i mixed with 2 venerables turntables (TECHNICS SL DJ MK2) , i'm not best of you or of people just i say i know what the REAL job in creating music !!!! Excuse me if my english's not good, i try to learn it without translator help (i hate keep thing easly with computer help !!!

The reason he's using so many old synthesizers is because he was performing a piece that was written in 1976 on all of the original instruments. On his recent albums he uses a lot of softsynths and stuff. And about him playing simple melodies: that's what most electronic music is about, layering a lot of simple sounds on top of each other to create vast soundscapes. It takes a lot of skill, especially when your recording without DAWs and computers.

I'm not sure if DAWs make things easier or harder. I rarely turn my DAW on, I prefer to compose using a groovebox. Essentially the matrix sequence he uses, which was very advanced back then but comically huge now, functioned like a limited "groovebox" style sequencer. Part of my problem with DAWs is they are'nt limited, there's too many choices, ending in decision paralysis.

@@lundsweden hi!I'm installing all old software, like Acid 1.0. I want to start with the older, simpler daw and if at any point I feel like I need more options for editing, I'll start switching to newer versions.

Say what you want about Jarre, but this was a very nice little tour, capturing the essence of each instrument within a few seconds. You can tell he sees them as musical tools, means to an end. I have seen hipsters demoing cheap Microbrutes and Korg Volcas with far more prententions.

Awesome!! JMJ is a true hero of mine for mixing art with technology - his music will be the classical music of the future. Sadly it's becoming more and more difficult keeping these wonderful but complex analog instruments going as spares are drying up. I really hope that much more effort will be put into sourcing, reengineering and cloning equivalent parts over the years as sadly in many instances parts are being obtained by robbing them from scrapped instruments.

This is a great history lesson. I missed JMJ when he came to Houston. I was only 10years old but I never forgave myself. I was out of town. That was supposed to be my Woodstock...lol. I grew up wanting to be like JMJ. Not your typical rock star dream. Learned how to play fourth rendezvous on the keyboard...at ten. Without the concert I lost interest and stopped playing keyboard just 2 years later. But I'm rejuvenated...and have found my passion for music again. Thanks for the video S

I saw him in Houston in the 80’s. A laser light show with music. They put lasers on top of skyscrapers with a huge stage covered with keyboards. I’m in the keyboard repair business and was asked to help with a MIDI interface. I met with his techs and worked in a high rise near the stage being setup. While I was there I located a great place to park for the upcoming concert . We went early, found the parking spot and waited for the concert to start. The music was awesome. As for the lasers, they were terrific but somewhat comprised due to foggy conditions.

His dad Maurice Jarre (recently died) was an Oscar winning film composer and his wife, Charlotte Rampling was a british actress so i'm sure he was well connected and found the means to support his synth gear addiction. He desearves whichever toy he wants for research with his awesome talent for composing electronic music. I especially like Zoolook which included Laurie Anderson and Adrian Belew.
