That stuff is an amazingly good soil amendment. You've got a great idea with this application of a hammer mill. Absolutely genius man.

Wtf were I live they are required to return the shells to the sea and on top.of that new oysters grow on old oyster shells maybe this explains whe oysters on the east coast are nearly extinct
@computiacusa

I always thought the same thing, they return them to the beds so new ones can grow.

West coast piles are from farmed oysters. Citizens harvesting wild oysters are required to shuck the oysters on the beach and leave the shells. 18 per day per person during season in Washington state. (Where Jason is from).

Also excellent for hens and egg production. Still can't get over why states haven't discovered the benefits of dumping the shells to create new oyster beds and protect coastlines...

The shell is the primary thing that new oyster grab hold of to live on

What would happen to the oysters and the oyster shells if they weren't taken out of the ocean for food and left there to mature and then eventually die? I'm not in favor of dumping oyster shells back in the ocean but it seems to be that that's where they came from and that's where they would stay if someone didn't remove them from the ocean to consume them.

That’s what I’m wondering. It’s not like it’s living tissue which would rot and release harmful stuff into the oceans. You’d think it would be good to put that calcium back into the water to be broken down and used again by shell building animals
@EntropicNightmare
@EntropicNightmare Месяц назад
For most fishing practices I'e agree with you, but that actually isn't where they came from in this case. Oysters are farmed and bred en masse. If we weren't farming and eating so many of them, there never would've been so many there in the first place. Oyster farming is actually one of the most sustainable types of aquaculture. It has a very low and arguably positive environmental impact.

Also, unless spread out over a wide enough area, too much ouster shell waste could potentially cause problems. But if spread around, it seems like an acceptable if low impact measure to fight ocean acidification.
