Ozcut is known for making excellent broadheads. I've previously tested the Hurricane. Let's see how this Elite Series 3 blade performs in my new testing regimen. I may have left off the price of these heads...they are $14.33/head.
I have a new test for edge sharpness and edge retention, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Tester. I test it out of the box and then again after Penetration Test 1, to see the edge retention. I also have a different test for flight--shooting one field point and two broadheads at 40 yds to see how well they group. And then I have a new overall Lusk Grade that I assign to each head--they receive anywhere between Zero and Ten Golden Arrows.
I have also picked up a new sponsor with my top recommendation for Broadhead Sharpening. staysharpguide.com The support I get for that has helped me improve my channel.
Here is my sharpness scoring scale, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Testing Machine:
First of all, what are some common scores for other edges? Here are some examples:
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge takes approx 375 grams of pressure to break the wire.
A utility razor blade takes approx 200 grams to break the wire.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
701-800 gr: 4
801-900 gr: 3
901-1000 gr: 2
1001-1100 gr: 1
1101+ gr: 0
Edge Retention: Sharpness difference after Penetration Test 1:
10 minus 1 point for every 50 grams of sharpness difference. For example, if the initial sharpness was 400 gr of pressure and the sharpness after Penetration Test 1 was 450, the head would receive a 9 for Edge Retention Score.

Thank you for this video. I really like this head and bought it based on your review. Flight, durability, and ease of sharpening were all high on my list. I shot a hog at 75 yards with my compound bow with this broad head. The flight was very true in a pretty decent wind and it did some major damage. The hog dropped right on impact. The broadhead was in perfect condition. I will be using this for the foreseeable future. Thank you for the reviews .

That's a good suggestion. Most people have a misconception about sharpness and penetration. Sharpness has little affect on penetration thru many mediums. I shot a super sharp Extract then one that I dulled with a file till it was like a butter knife, and it only penetrated 1/2" less. But sharpness does affect tissue cutting and thus blood letting.

I bought these heads and wanted to use them to fill my last 2 doe tags. I also just acquired the 344. When you use the 344 guide on these heads, are you counting the strokes for each side or you’re going until there is a burr then switching to the next side? Thanks and love the reviews.

I do count the strokes--and do it until there is a burr. It takes hundreds of strokes on each grit.
@justinlane3483
@justinlane3483 3 года назад
John, not sure if you have considered it but I've noticed that broadheads have a TON of variability in the blade pitch. If you could divise a way to determine the force required to pierce a substance that would show good data IMO. It would help show how far out a broadhead is effective based on the force required to penetrate hide only.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 года назад
Thanks Justin. I appreciate the suggestion. However, there is some serious misconception about force required to penetrate. What happens to a head when it is pushed thru a medium is completely different than what happens when it is flying at 280 fps. It's almost irrelevant to show that. If you watch my tests, the longer 3:1 ratio heads typically do not penetrate as well as the shorter heads--yet they would penetrate much easier with a push test. It's really interesting to see that. I would like to demonstrate that at some point in a vid.

@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 года назад
Man, hard to narrow it down. There are so many factors and a lot of it largely depends on the animal you're hunting and your own bow/arrow set up. And there are a lot of really good heads on the market today. That's why I have the scoring system, to break down their performance a bit. But I'd say the best all round fixed head, especially in the "normal" price category is the Exodus.
@cjr4497
@cjr4497 Год назад
I just picked up a pack of these based on this test. I have been shooting Sevr's for 2 years now, but I wanted to have a fixed in my quiver again for certain situations. Man these Ozcuts are tiny. I guess I don't know how to measure a 3 blade properly because I can only come up with 7/8". My old 90 gr Muzzy 4 blades are 1" and these are supposed to be 1 1/8" yet the Muzzy's seem much larger. Anyway, they shoot great. I didn't have to touch my tuning. They were dead on with the Sevr's out to 50 which is my max range and as far as I shot them. I had one arrow shoot them way out to the right, but moving over to the next fletch position pulled it right back in. FYI for anyone out there: I am shooting a 300 spine 455gr Gold Tip velocity at 280fps fletched with 4 RH Bohning heat vanes out of a Prime inline 3 set at 70#, don't know the FOC but total point weight is 162 grains (head, insert, screw-in weight)
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures Год назад
The way to measure them is to push one thru a piece of paper. Then draw a circle around the end of each cut. Then measure the diameter of that circle. It should be 1 1/8"

question, wouldn't the bevel angle be 60 degrees on each side totaling 120 degrees (1/3 of a circle) for each blade. if each cutting blade is 30 on each side totaling 60 degrees per blade like stated in your video that is only 180 degrees of total broadhead (60X3=180) and how would sharpening on a flat stone sharpen that angle?
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 года назад
Good question Jake. It does get confusing. The blades are 120 degrees apart, with 3 blades evenly space around a 360 degree circle. But then the bevels of each blade are 60 degrees of double bevel, or 30 degrees on each side of the blade, creating a flat surface between every 2 blades. If the double bevel of each blade were 120 degrees and the bevel of each edge 60 degrees, that edge would be almost flat and not very "sharp" at all, as 180 degrees is flat. If you draw it out on paper, you can see it pretty clearly--the 180 degree "flat edge" of each blade is divided into thirds, each being 60 degrees. When you draw that, you can see there is a flat line between every two edges. If you compare it to a typical single bevel head. Most single bevel broadheads range from 22-40 degrees. Many think 40 degrees is too dull (but they're not correct). Imagine if that single bevel were 60 degrees--talk about "dull." Does that make sense?
@mildmanneredmercifulmouse1839
Don't think of it as a circle. Think of it as a triangle (three points). All triangles equal 180 degrees. 180 divided by three even points (three "corners") equal 60 degrees per corner / blade.

I wanted to share my experience with the extensive issues with the OzCut 3 blade heads. I used them for a year shot them a lot, took a bull with one and liked them a whole lot at that time. I thought they were an excellent value as they can be found for a little over $30. I just like easy to sharpen compact 3 blades. Then everything changed. I've had 6 broadheads completely shear off. 3 of which completely sheared off at the base in brand new foam targets (Sevr and 18:1). The last one was at elk camp and I completely lost faith in them. Also, every box came in different cut diameters, none of which made the measured 1 1/8". The quality is just terrible and the company doesn't stand by their product. I had to nearly destroy the targets to get the broadheads out so I could have bought Iron Will heads at this cost. Hell Bishop. The original ones (they just came out with a stainless) were MIM (metal injected molded) heads, unhardened and were made of 1060 carbon steel. A very cheap MIM steel. Honestly, they worked great until they didn't. Some heads seemed indestructible.. And some couldn't even be shot into a target. They promised to make it up to me and send some Nexxus Components. After 5 months and many many reminders, them giving excuses they still haven't shown up. I'd avoid this company like the plague. They are made in China using substandard quality. I'd put them about 10% higher quality than the DeePower heads. There are so many more reputable companies out there I see no reason to support this outfit. The new ones might be better but "Failure is Definitely an Option"

@LuskArcheryAdventures as an update - OzCut was in the process of transferring ownership from 2 owner to 1. They also switched manufacturers and the new head is a 420 stainless steel and is CNC machined and hardened. The old head was a low grade MIM cast steel without a hardening process (I believe). They sent me 6 replacement heads and I have had no issues. They still fly better than anything else I've shot that is unvented.. so I'll continue trying them but I'm 6 months in and have had zero issues with these new heads and I've shot them extensively.
