Welcome to October, aka Halloween Awareness Month.
Diary of a madman, Randy Rhodes's Magnum Opus, and the last recorded track, pretty much all of us got to hear from him. without a doubt, this, followed by SATO are my favorite tracks from his tenure with Ozzy. Learning this in all of its intricacies was a labor of love... an extremely tedious labor at that.
If you are interested, I also uploaded a "guitar only" cover: • Ozzy Osbourne - Diary ...
I believe in total, I recorded somewhere around 23 guitar tracks, not all of which were filmed, which is kind of a tragedy, but heck, there are 12 guitar tracks viewable on this. I tried very hard on this to replicate every sound and nuance that I could pick up. And although I've been listening to it for the last 38 years, I keep hearing more and more new things, especially when I sat down to really get this thing down. There are harmonics played on a single guitar in the middle bit before the lead, where it kind of slows down and gets creepy. Never heard that before I sat down to do this! There are places on this where I confess I feel like I got it really, really close. And in fact, when I listen to it by itself, it kind of gives me the chills that this was me. I am not trying to say anything egotistical. I am actually surprised how close I believe I got in places. Never in my wildest dreams, you know? Although I haven't talked to Max Norman or anyone like that, I am fairly certain of the amount of guitars used on this. I doubled or tripled everything. Everything, (well, except for the harmonic chimes and Russian-influenced harmonies in the creepy bit; those are just doubled), mostly panned, left, right, and center. I nearly went mad doing this. Now let's talk about where this music came from.
Granted, this piece begins with what must have been a deconstructed from a study by Leo Brower. I think Mr. Rhodes was going over it as a study, just memorizing it in a block chord routine, just arpeggiating the basics of it, when Oz probably came stumbling in, listening to what he's playing and said, "Yeah, man, you gotta play this". And then they kind of wrote the whole song around the Leo Brower study. It is what it is. But there have been interviews with Rhodes before where he was talking about how Ozzy would hear him playing something and go, like, "yeah, let's write the thing here and there", which is how they got Goodbye to Romance, for instance. I'm assuming this isn't much different. Now, if you want some fun, learn that study. It's study number six, I believe. And if you can play Diary of a Madman, you can probably play that, although it is arpeggiated significantly differently.
My life would not be the same without this music. Rest in peace, Randy. Thank you for the music.
P.S. Useless trivia: there are 2 editing errors. One synchronization, and one cut.
If anyone is interested in the full text of my dispute over the global copyright visibility block (which is still under review):
I am disputing the copyright claim upon being fully blocked globally on this guitar cover. There are thousands of Ozzy guitar covers available on RU-vid currently that are not blocked by you and some of them are even of me playing the cover. How fair would it be to block only me playing this particular tune while leaving all these others available for viewing by the public?
Guitar covers are a labor of love and a show of respect for the original artist, in this case, Ozzy Osbourne and the deceased Randy Rhodes. Randall William Rhodes passed away in March of 1982 and became my first real guitar hero in 1987. This particular track is special because it is his last recorded studio work prior to his passing only a few months later. It is also an incredibly tedious labor of love that I set down and put on nearly 23 guitar tracks, replicating what he put down. This is not for my glory, it's for his. This is literally made to honor the musicians that made this originally.
But I do rebuke the charge of copyright infringement, because guitar covers are essentially a public service. I am also showing others how to play this by virtue of this being up here. I am showing friends that I too can play this, and I am showing Ozzy's Music and I'm making no claim otherwise. It's free advertising if done well, and I think I have. You should drop the claim.

Excellent, man! Thank you! There are so many little parts and textures. I recommend a real good set of headphones to try to isolate everything while learning it. I also recommend exploring the piece that was the inspiration for the intro: Study No 6 - Leo Brouwer. Excellent stuff and a very good exercise.
