P-15 Siren with Broken Rotator Amarillo Tx

Haha, it's hard to see a day it's not windy in Amarillo.

Might actually be a p10. And that can be fixed. It just needs that clearly out-of-gear chain reseated back on the gear that turns it.

@murrfarms Thanks for the reply. We were just curious whether it had to come apart. Seems like that would be pretty tough way up on the pole.

@MegaPrincessmeg The EOC actually looks at these videos we put up. I haven't been by this location is a long time but I would bet that it has been repaired. They are very good at taking care of these sirens to make sure they are operating properly. Thanks!!

@kdksiren They rotate on two large, self centering ball bearings. so friction is almost non-existent. You can replace the chain if you remove all the tension from it by turning the bolt that's on the back of the siren housing. Once that is done you just slip it off the drive sprocket.

Wow, talk about one healthy single phase P-15! I don't think I've ever heard one start up so quick to be one with a single phase capacitor start/run motor, sounds like a three phase one on 480. The problem doesn't look all that hard to fix, just looks like the chain fell off the rear drive sprocket and fell out of track, probably caused by the little tensioner spring breaking or something. Nice catch!

@LilKeke325 If it is just a normal day, the firedept/ eoc maybe doing a growl test to check operations. They usually do this to check the sirens for correct operation and communication to and from the siren controllers. If it does this during normal test or a real emergency, then there is a malfunction of the siren and it should be reported! Thanks for the question.

@carexpertandy They fixed the other one. They have been adding sirens (2001-130's) in different areas so probably been busy. They do an excellent job of maintaining them. This one should be repaired soon.

judging by the looks of it the rotator is trying to rotate but it cant but by observing it it's trying to rotate but it is showing that it needs attention to its rotator mechanize as it's turning slightly & then rotating a lil bit

@ExponentialError That's true. It was blowing a little harder than usual.

@bctrainers It was pretty loud but when the wind blew it towards us, it really pickup the volume.

@kdksiren Darn, Jeb beat me to it lol. The only thing I foresee having an issue with by doing that is how you would even swap chains out, as the only way I know of to do it is by unbolting the siren head from the bracket and lifting it just enough to slide the chain off and the new one on, but there has to be an easier way than that. Maybe they do have some sort of master link in it somewhere that you can take apart to remove/install it. Luckily I've yet to work on one with that problem!

Yea, the guy working on the control box said he would see about fixing it. I couldn't see the chain, so guess it fell off. Wonder how long it has been like that?

@acahurricane1275 You would be correct. Most sirens here are on 480V. The 2001's and modulators are 110.

@murrfarms Thanks. Just happened to catch him working on it. He said it was a 230V single phase so, like you, was some what surprised to hear the fast start up. Was wondering if it was hard to change the chain? Do you have to install a master link or is there an easier way? Also, didn't think that they would wobble so easy in the wind. Must be really balanced. Would love to see one up close on the ground.

Hey, btw, rumor has it that the city has replaced 2 of the modulators with 2001-130's. Haven't had time to go look but thats what I heard. Will be looking and checking to see if they end up in the auction. Interested?

I hope they can fix this considering that People in the other direction of where the siren is facing won't be able to hear it too well. Especially in a place like texas where they get tornadoes and severe weather a lot.

@kdksiren Look again, that's a single phase siren. The capacitor banks in the control box are the giveaway. It's on 240.

Nothing to be sorry about! We are not sure but think it was what ever the customer ordered. Though we haven't seen one for sure, they could be single or dual tone in either model. But not sure.

I wonder why the siren's rotator started working before the siren went off.

Has this siren been replaced?

What does the rotator do for the sirens?

The system that is used to operate them is a Federal type. When they buy the sirens, they need to get the encoding system for that siren. If they bought another type, they would have to by the siren from who ever and the controls from FS. Too expensive and complicated i'm sure.

Did they replaced that siren or not

Believe us! We sure don't know everything about them. There are alot of knowledgeable people out there and we have learned alot from them. The only way to learn is ask and do research. I wonder why Amarillo doesn't buy ASC sirens anymore.

I love how most city will replace their sirens even if it’s like a simple fix like if the belt or chain brakes or if the motor went out, like they should have extra part lying around
