Growling Sidewinder Store: teespring.com/stores/growling-sidewinder-store The P-51 Mustang in DCS is sort of out classed by the Bf109 K4 and so sometimes you have to get a little creative to get the kill against a compete opponent who can exploits superior aircraft, even if that means dragging him into a turn fight to bleed some energy let him shoot at you to lose more energy by pulling lead and then pull him into a stall maneuver that eventually leads to his demise lol. All jokes aside I heard that his is a real thing Mustang pilots did during the way if there was a 109 they just couldnt shake, if that's true those guys really were both brave and insane much respect to all the pilots who fought during those insane world war 2 battles. Hope you guys enjoyed the video and a big thank you for watching.

Probably only sporadically. P-51 variants outclass their same-period 109 counter-parts in climb rate, speed etc. US had the better fuel etc to run higher engine power. K4 isn't that numerous either. So the time P-51 pilots need to fight 1v1 would be rare. That stall kill is cool though.

@@ecpgieicg It doesn't work as straight forward as you put it.The performance of both aircraft improved through time and depended on variant. For instance the P-51 of late 1943 early 1944 did outperform the contemporary BF-109 G-6 (though the latter could still outurn, outaccelerate and outclimb the former at lower attitudes). However and in spite of the improved engine parameters of late war P-51D's, the K-4 was such a vast improvement that it did outperform any wartime Mustangs. Of course the P-51H did outperform the K-4, but it never saw combat, so the comparasion is kind off pointless.

Re: your rate issues in the P-51D, while I don't think you'll ever straight-up out-rate a 109k4 one thing to note is that you're taking these turns at about 325 kias. From what I've read, the best sustained turn rate for the P-51D IRL is about 270-280 kias *with the flaps down 10 to 20 degrees*. I don't know how well that translates to the flight model of the P-51D DCS module, but it's something to think about.

I would say that’s correct within reason. I mean if u put the best pilot in the world in a spitfire and then gave the guy with less experience the f22 I think the f22 will win but that’s why I say within reason. Great video GS! I LOVED the dogfight, but the aviation historian in me is bothered. You would only find a Mustang with invasion stripes like that during June 1944. There's no way a P-51 in that livery would meet a K-4. Invasion stripes under the wings would be more likely, but simply black ID bands around the wings would be the most likely. Also, the antenna arrangement isn't correct for an ETO Mustang. ETO Mustangs usually didn't have antenna wire, nor did they have a Pacific arrangement on antennas. Yours is a Pacific Mustang with the rear dual antennas, antenna line, and forward lower fuselage antenna. An ETO one should only have one rear antenna instead of two with none underneath the fuselage.

One advantage the allied air forces had was water methanol injection toward the latter stages of the war, this was called "war emergency power" only to be used as a last resort. One spitfire pilot in malta said he used it once to out climb a Bf 190, he stated that his ground crew told him not to use it for more than 30 seconds as it could shear off the cylinder head bolts.

61 manifold 66 with wep wire broken its pitiful compared to the 75 inches we should be getting with allied fuel but p-51 is an old module and its unlikely to be "balanced" around the time they gone with now as opposed to the time when the pony was the only ww2 bird. This lower pressure in p-51 is with lower quality fuel used around 43 as opposed to the 109k doled out late November '44 when the allies were using much higher grade fuel 150 octane if I'm not mistaken. 10" mercury pressure probably doesn't sound like much but it's an enormous leap in terms of piston driven engines.

@@Savage_Viking not really. They made less power than the P51. The only outright advantage was fuel injection. The BF109 performs so well because it's a light weight fighter where as the P51 has armor and six 50cals with loads of ammo. I disagree with the BF109s ability to out dive a P51 that makes a lot more power. Doesn't make any sense.
@historomaniak
@historomaniak 3 года назад
@@PyroBlonde7777 Well I would highly recommend watching Greg's take on it, in this video. But long story short the 109K advantage was actually water-methanol injection system, which allowed them to pump out alot power even from their much lower grade fuels. Cheers! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1PA70pN6zPM.html&ab_channel=Greg%27sAirplanesandAutomobiles
@Spartan4131
@Spartan4131 3 года назад
@@PyroBlonde7777 The engine power depends on which 109 you're comparing the P-51 to and what boost rating the P-51 is running. At its highest boost of 75", the P-51 produces ~1850 hp and at the more common 72", ~1750 hp. By comparison, the Bf 109 G-14 produced ~1800 hp, the G-10 anywhere from ~1700 hp to ~2000 hp depending on the engine used, and the K-4 ~1800 hp to ~2000 hp again, depending on the engine used. So comparing the best 109 to the best P-51 from the war, the 109 did actually have a more powerful engine than the P-51 by a fairly significant margin. The P-51H-series did produce more than 2200 hp, but those didn't see service in WW2 and certainly not in the ETO. As for armor, neither plane had a significant amount of armor, and in fact very few aircraft in WW2 did. In the P-51 you'll find armor in the back of the seat and headrest for the pilot, as a firewall between the pilot and the engine, and as a small sheet located in the nose of the aircraft to protect the engine/coolant systems. The 109 had an armored seat and headrest and armor surrounding the fuel tank which was positioned just behind the pilot. Armor, therefore, differed relatively little between the two and any differences in practical durability would be much more due to construction methods than the actual presence of armor on the aircraft, and the Mustang was still superior in this regard. As for out-diving, it depends on the scenario. At high speed the P-51 would outdive the 109 K-4 while at low speed the K-4 would win. This is because low-speed acceleration is primarily a factor of power-to-weight, which the 109 excels in, but becomes a competition of parasite drag, which the P-51 excels in, as speeds increase. For a more in-depth explanation on this and aircraft dive performance in general, I recommend checking out AdamTheEnginerd's video titled "Mythbusting | Do Heavier Aircraft Dive Better Than Lighter Aircraft? "

Bf-109 K4 was introduced in December 1944 and was the last varient built it was the best it could climb at over 4500 ft/min and boasted 30mm mk 108 cannon and another 13mm it had a top speed of 445mph and in dives could reach 520mph before breaking apart. It also was very agile and could complete a horizontal turn in just 19.8 seconds. It could out turn the top american fighter the P-51 and could outrun the top british fighter of the year the Spitfire mk 24. In fact the K4 was good at dogfighting particularly at high altitude that the soviets banned their pilot's from any engagement at altitudes higher than 21k ft. The only allied opponents that could match the K4's stats were the soviet yak 9 and yak 3.

With the wing loading and engine setting the mustang had in 1944 it could out turn most 109s except 109 Fs. By the time the k4 was even talked about, or even thought about it ran 72”-75” manifold giving it 1700HP+ - 1900HP~ (1882 I think or somewhere like that) and had a wing loading of 38lbs/sqft-44lbs/sqft usually less than 44lbs/sqft unless it managed to not burn off any fuel after flying long range, but mainly it would be at 39lbs/sqft. The K4s wing loading best case scenario was 41lbs I don’t know what it would be on full fuel though. So most likely the mustang could out turn most 109s with enough speed to be honest. I don’t know how DCS models the mustang but I believe they gave it the lowest possible engine settings. 72”-75” of manifold should be majority for a mustang facing a time period of 1944-1945. It was more commonly ran than the amount of K4s flown the entire war.

The BF-109 still had a lower stall speed at that point in time, slats and wing design made up for the higher wing-loading. Also forgot the power-to-weight ratio, which was considerably higher than a Mustang.
@BARelement
@BARelement 3 года назад
@@miquelescribanoivars5049 The 109 K did not have the same stall speeds as the 109 Fs, and earlier Gs it was heavier with no increase in wing area. That will bring your stall speed up, and stall speed doesn’t indicate your turn rate at all speeds will be better. It’s just showing that you can stay in the air at a slower speed, making slower speed climbs more efficient than in a aircraft with a high stall speed. I’m sure a P 51 D on 72”-75” could out shallow climb, and had better retention in shallows than the more Draggy, more powerful K4.
@BARelement
@BARelement 3 года назад
@@corvus9490 Honestly, I think people who fan boy germany want the most unrealistic advantages for the sake of the Nazis losing the actual war they want to win it for them in games I guess. I don’t understand the mentality. But yeah DCS can’t call itself the best sim if they can’t correct the manifold pressure of the mustang to standards of late 1943 and beyond. The german props encountered in the game were out in 1944-1945 therefore mustangs should run a clean 72” manifold at the LEAST.
@BARelement
@BARelement 3 года назад
@@miquelescribanoivars5049 Power to weight is nice but wing area still matters to an extent. Hence why some folks even bring up wing loading to begin with. Also wing slays actually cause more drag making MER (maneuvering energy retention) worse. So I could see a mustang keeping more speed in turns, etc. but at corner speeds it would out turn the K4. The only late 109s I think could really out do it is things like G14 & G14 A/S but even then try to take the fight faster. Lastly I’d like to say there were reports saying the 109 after 270mph would start locking up and not being able to pull as hard as below that number. Something like 5Gs-7Gs depending on the air speed. It was well known the mustang could out turn it at higher speeds though. However if both planes started at stall speed and had to gain speed in turns keeping it as level as possible the k4 wins that basically because acceleration at slow speed. But if that mustang has decent speed which most did if they are just flying straight for a bit it would have good chance.

You’re a god of a pilot…one thing I learned from this channel is that all of those top 10 fighter craft videos literally lie and put an American fighter #1 lol

I don't know GS if you know this or not but this Stall menuver was actually used by an American p51 pilot Bud Anderson in 1944...I have seen it in history dogfights..

Very well fought! The Bf 109K4 its one of my favourites WW2 planes and clearly superior to almost everything on that time. But you did an amazing job reading his movements and recognizing when you should transfer the turn fight to a stall fight! By the way, i would love to see an official DCS module of the Ta-152 H1 that plane was the absolute beast at high altitud. Much respect from Argentina and keep the good work!

Awesome mate. Just about desperation and some luck. Ticking off the options. Is the Spitfire in the same.disadvantage? Keep em coming. Live your work. :)

I'd love to see a p51 Vs a spitfire. I assume the spitfire would win most of the fights, but I really wanna see how that fight goes between two different allied fighters

That maneuver (The Hammerhead maneuver) is god like when yoiure in a P-47. Energy retention is its primary advantage.

That stall maneuver is called a hammerhead turn and its mostly performed on a P-38.
