Genius! I would not believe it, but I had basically the exact same sequence of events recently while fixing a friend's 2017 Honda Accord (2.4 liter, CVT). About 55k miles, this was the first problem the car had. P0717 code. Similar difficulty finding the sensor on the car, got replacement at NAPA, swapped it in and the car was fixed. No codes, car drove fine ... for two weeks. Then it got the P0796, EXACTLY like you did, car would drive terribly, only in limp mode. So happy I found this video before taking anything apart. I did the repeated cycling with the gear selector as you said; I did not do any disconnecting / reconnecting connectors (everything was still hot - my friend drove over to my house after work). And that shifting (with the car stopped, foot on the brake, waiting 2 seconds after each shift) FIXED IT, just like you said. I know you were tired, but I am really glad you took the time to make the video. 2 weeks later and it is still running fine. Will be ordering some HCF-2 to change the fluid, and will make sure maintenance is on schedule or better. I think the reason that the sensor is so hard to find and nobody has the part in stock is that the sensor never actually fails. It appears solid state, does not touch anything, and I was very doubtful it could possibly actually fail. Was expecting to find chewed wiring but did not. Checked connector voltages and they were good, before ordering the part. Saved the original, and expect it is still OK. UPDATE - after doing the procedure in this video, which fixed things, we changed the ATF (4 quarts) and ATF filter. 5 months later things are still running great. If not for this video, I don't know how much effort and $$ we would have wasted chasing a problem that is not there. The ATF was dirty, and definitely overdue for a change, and that is probably what triggered the problem.
Thank you bud! I have this issue with the engine light on after I changed transmission fluid pan because I had a crack. Now the engine light on and OBD reads P0796
so basically you cleared the codes then disconnected and reconnected the sensors then with the car ignition on you put it in the different gears until the CVT rotated enough? and the codes never returned after that first clear
please can you advice on my 2016 Honda accord 3.5. the transmission is showing a code P2720, do you have any video on this. it will drive forward , but the reverse doesn't work
any specific way to "adjust" the transmission? I tried rotating gears for about 15 mins and i still get the p0717. thanks for showing the location of the speed sensor btw
Im having this issue now myself. Although i suspect mines worse off! But the only codes its showing is the solenoid! I will try to remove the sensors. Like you did. It will go into drive and rev until the code gets tripped then bam! It kicks it out of gear at that point . Wont go back until i clear it .
