The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has done a great job of removing dangerous particles from the air we breathe, but has also caused some headaches in the automotive trade. One of the main questions we receive at VACC’s TechAdvisory Service about DPF issues is how to repair recurring soot accumulation fault codes.
This can be a complicated problem, but we will give you some diagnostic steps to narrow down the cause. DPF Life Span You should assess the vehicle’s age and mileage as DPF units have a life span. As they regenerate, the soot particles are burned to smaller ash particles which will remain inside the DPF channels. As this ash builds up it will eventually block the DPF. No number of regenerations will unblock the DPF as you can’t burn ash twice. The only options are removal for cleaning (more on this later) or replacement with a new DPF assembly.
Soot load reading and DPF Differential Pressure Sensor readings should be checked and we have provided some know good values for both in the June 2023 TechTalk magazine.
If the DPF is blocked, there are now aftermarket DPF cleaning services that can remove ash and soot build up and can return the DPF unit back to near new condition.
