In this video I build a 6 foot by 3.5 foot P5 panel screen to use in my Christmas light display. I have use 1x6 boards for the box and have constructed an internal edge to mount the P4 panels to. These panels will hang from the top on my front porch under one of the eves. I plan on hoisting it into place using a pully system or small chain hoist. The following is a listing of the materials I used to build this enclosure.
1x6 boards: At total of file 8 ft boards. Four were for the outside skin and one was ripped on a table saw for the internal shelf that the P5 panels were mounted to. www.homedepot....
½ inch plywood cut to approximately 6 foot 4 inches wide by 4 feet tall.
4 shelving brackets from Home Depot. www.homedepot....
Boscoyo Clear Polyocarbonate Sheet to protect the front of the panels from rain. boscoyostudio....
42 P5 indoor panels from Wally’s Lights (buy 10% extra for future replacements). Configured for a 7 tall by 6 wide screen. www.wallysligh...
Colorlight card from Wally’s Lights. www.wallysligh...
Raspberry Pi 4 www.amazon.com...
Three, 5 V, 300 watt Meanwell power supplies. www.wiredwatts...
One set of P5 and P10 Combo Side Mounting Strips from Wired Watts(7 panels tall). www.wiredwatts...
5 sets of P5 and P10 Combo Center Mounting Strip from Wired Watts (7 panels tall). www.wiredwatts...
Two mounts for the colorlight and Raspberry Pi from Wired Watts. www.wiredwatts...
Three mounts for 5 volt power supplies from Wired Watts. www.wiredwatts...
Panel Power Distribution boards from J Boards and Wired Watts (total of 6 used).

I am looking into building a p5 matrix like you did. Have you had any issues with your indoor panels being used outdoors? and how long have you had yours. I live in Ohio and we get all types of weather.
@bergmannlights5149
@bergmannlights5149 7 месяцев назад
My enclosure is well sealed so no issues with weather. I do hang it under my pouch, so no direct rain. That being said I do get some intense wind, and it does fine. I let it swing so a good portion of the wind load is deflected

Any idea how much power on average this uses at 100% ?
@bergmannlights5149
@bergmannlights5149 Год назад
Not sure but I have 3 350 watt 5V dc power supplies on the panel. I run my whole show on two circuits, so the power draw is quite reasonable

Awesome build How much does it weigh?
@bergmannlights5149
@bergmannlights5149 5 месяцев назад
Thanks Not sure but it is heavy. I am guessing 100 lbs. I can lift it to place it on my work bench but it is difficult to. That is why I made wheels for it and I use some hand hoists to install it for my show.

Yea, I’m using a pixel matrix now but it’s very heavy too was hoping the panels would be lighter, maybe I can build it in two or three pieces and just clip them together

You get different looks from a pixel matrix and a P5 panel. You need to decide which one you prefer. Your Pixel store sells P panel setups with prebuilt enclosures. I believe they are aluminum so they should be lighter. Another option is to use a cheap TV

Where would the tipping point be between a build like this and a grid of four of your run of the mill $300 50" 4k TVs from Walmart? Obviously one aspect would be weather, but a pretty simple enclosure could solve that problem I would think? I'm not trying to take anything away from the excellent work you've put into this build- but from a beginner's view it's a bit daunting :)

A large budget TV would be cheaper then a large P5 panel. The cost of these panels has gone up and the price of TVs has gone down. It also depends on what kind of look you are going for. I recently gave a friend the advice to get a large low cost TV connected to a Pi instead of building one of these panels.

What was estimated cost of this build?
@davidbergmann987
@davidbergmann987 2 года назад
The P5 panels and colorlight/Pi was ~$1000, panels come from Wally’s lights. The plastic sheet covering the front was $50 from Boscoyo. The plastic connectors and fuse boards were ~$150 which I got from Wired watts.The rest came from a local big box store and was probably $150. Grand total is ~$1350

Very nice build. Any issue with condensation? I didn't see any drain holes in the bottom.
@bergmannlights5149
@bergmannlights5149 2 года назад
I do not have any drain holes and haven't seen any problems. I live in a dry area so lots of moisture isn't too much of an issue. That being said, ventilation is a big help on keeping condition under control.

Hi! are these P5 or P4 panels? Couple places say P4 and they look very dense in color. Thanks!
@bergmannlights5149
@bergmannlights5149 Год назад
They are P5 panels. You could use the same approach for P4
