Let's work the new Epiphone, now upgraded and dialed in with twin Gibson P90s! We'll be going through the Neil Young classic "Down By The River" to show off the tones.
On Neils tonight's the night album Danny wrote and sang come on baby lets go downtown a really great song.Tonights the night is the album cover on the t shirt that the late great Ronnie Van zant wore.
While part of that is true (especially regarding Crazy Horse and the recorded version), I disagree with the "doesn't play on that song in any case" part... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F0NjZrPX-l0.html
It was a firebiird pickup. The story goes that his pup shit the bed and all they could find that would fit the mini Humbucker route was a firebird pickup (which is its own pickup really) but sounds more p90 than Humbucker or single coil. Cool video man!
Great song to pick for showing off those awesome pups - always like the effect of rocking the volume knobs with P90s. Really into the big zebra looks too; brings the cream tuner buttons more into the picture. Boss job lad!
Back when i started learning in the 70’s people used to take the p-90’s out & put Dimarzios or Duncans in. I never owned anything close but it always seemed a waste. Great playing! love the axe & your channel!
Nice to see the P90s get some love! I really like the beefy sound they produce. My SG guitar has them. I'm not a good player, but I find they are really good for getting me to sound like the guitar tones on some iconic classic rock songs.
Sounds great! I have 2010 Epi p90 LP Special. Love that guitar. It's one of the custom shop set neck ones in a custom color. Sort of cream colored but with several other colors mixed in there if you look closely. I think they were going for a marbled effect. Weird but I like it.
Neil's bridge pickup has been a Firebird pickup since the early 70s. The original Duosonic needed to be rewound and the shop he took it to closed - he never saw it again. The only pickup they could find that fit was a Firebird - a really microphonic one at that.
Thanks again for all the great rock info, hey I was wondering if you could shed some light in Dan Fogelberg and what a great musician and guitarist he was, such and underated guy.
Thing is, Neil had 2 P-90's in "Old Black". The bridge P-90 died. He wanted to replace it with another stock P-90 however the pickup that he got was a Thunderbird bridge pickup. He ended up liking it so much that he never used any other pickup in the Les Paul. I've heard people say it was a P-90. I've heard people say that it was a mini humbucker when neither was true. It has been a Thunderbird pickup stuffed into that Les Paul of his. Also the Thunderbird pickup is a different pickup all it's own. It is not a mini humbucker. The guts are completely different. The only reason I know this is because I wanted to build a replica of Old Black. So I had to do as much investigation into exactly what it was to build mine as close to the original Les Paul that Neil always played. Between that and his funky amp rig along with his old and unique stomp boxes. It is all his own and he has never changed.
These are cool; I’ve been fortunate to own the Gibson Custom Shop version of that guitar for quite a few years now. Re Neil Young’s Les Paul; its P-90 bridge pickup was replaced with a mini humbucker which fits in the same rout. It’s quite microphonic too.
@@TheGuitarHistorian You are absolutely right. That’s what it is. Also; to add to your comments about how by turning the volume knob it goes from acoustic like to gnarly, just look at Pete Townshend playing his SG Specials live with The Who for a perfect example of how this works.
I found the entire set on reverb for 180. And the guitar I got for less than $400. It was really just that set. I’ve seen a pair of Gibson p90s for sale 225-250 for the pups alone so I got a great deal.
Looked for drop D ala Cinnamon Girl. 'falls' out of my guitar lately (Epi Jr needs this). Recall a cover of Down By The River from Roy B. Worth a look.
@@TheGuitarHistorian Close. The Les Paul body is a bit thicker and usually has the maple cap and binding etc. A Jr is mahogany and no maple cap. The Jr was basically a bare bones rock machine!
That other guitar part is an overdub. It's added to the recording. I makes the album sound very good. He doesn't even have Still live anymore. It's 3 piece. I learned to play on this guys music and when i moved into more advanced guitar playing I moved on to different bands. that is great learning material though for sure and great songs. Not dance able though. concert song. Not a bar band song. Try Lynyrd Slynyrds first album pronounced if you want to step yout guitar game a bit. It's all pretty simple also. I know there are 3 guitars. Just concentrate ont he rhythm part. there isn't a lot of lead work in that first album aside of free bird.
I love the NO STAIRWAY sign! I'm a huge Jimmy Page and Zeppelin freak. But if I hear Stairway one more time.......... No Stairway No Freebird No Hotel California No Bohemian Rhapsody I think you get the drift. ✌💀👍🎸🎼🎶🎵🧠🌌♾⚡
Although I get the sentiment,...Everyone should realize that Epiphone is Gibson and Gibson is Epiphone. Gibson purchased the Epiphone name and operations in 1957. So basically, Epiphone guitars have absolutely nothing to do with the original company or any other company besides Gibson.. Every Epiphone is blueprint designed and produced BY Gibson...Gibson operates their Epiphone branded products facilities in China but everything is operater and controlled by Gibson because it IS Gibson. Now I get that their Gibson "branded" guitars and products are not the exact same..But there is very little difference in an upper end Epiphone - Gibson and a Gibson - Gibson. I've been playing for 42 years and live gigging the past 29 years. I own five high-end Epi Les Pauls, all purchased in the last 3 years and three Gibson Les Pauls...What I'm saying is absolutely true and spoken from first hand experience.
I definitely hear you and while I agree that Epiphone has been making some very good guitars for a very long time, I have always thought that the “Epiphone is just as good as Gibson” argument a bit silly. Who on Earth would pay 4x the price for a guitar if Epiphones were as good as Gibsons? It is not just a question of where the guitars are made. It is also electronics, pickups, woods used, craftsmanship… Gibson would be out of business if they allowed Epiphone to make guitars that were just as good as theirs.
@@TheGuitarHistorian Gibson doesn't "allow" Epiphone to do anything..Its the same company. The new Epiphone Les Paul Standards (50s & 60s) come equipped with CTS pots, Mallory caps, switchcraft output jack and 3-way selector. But even at that,..The oldest Epiphone I have is a 2019 Les Paul Standard that has the Alpha pots, ect. They are just as good as the CTS stuff...No issues and volume roll-offs sweep up fine and no problem with high end loss with volume rolled off.
I'm sorry I love you guitar historian and I've watched your videos for a while and I watched this video when you first put it out and didn't comment on it cuz I had to think about it for a while but you're playing through a flat top body guitar you're using two p90s even though one is a little better and all of the parts are Gibson that doesn't make a difference you don't have the firebird pickup that gives it that really troubling sound n the bridge. Also you're not using some kind of decent amp I mean you're playing a fender mustang dude with the British setting on you should at least have the Tweed setting on because Neil played through a lot of different Tweed fender amps mainly the deluxe and Danny whitten who was also playing on this track play The Grinch through a Tweed fender so I'm confused why you have it on the British setting I don't know man I like a lot of your videos but this one kind of just rubbed me the wrong way sorry
I love you too and you have now found out why I don’t do many playing videos. Firstly I’m not a great player and secondly I find it very difficult to get a good tone out of a mic’ed amp. I’ve tried but I always end up overloading it. In other words, I don’t know what I’m doing. I do have a solid state fender amp that I can use. And the reason I used the 60s British setting is because for some reason it sounded the best in the signal chain I was using. I am slowly learning the ways of digital recording brother.
Thinking about doing a retrospective of some songs over the years that used the P90. He did use the Monkey SG on the first album. Also Link Wray used a 53 LP on Rumble… maybe the “top 10 songs of the P90.”
Uh...souped the face up how? Changed one pickup cover? And with all these mods, aren't you getting closer to the price of the Gibson LP Special? I thought this was about the guitar, not your version of Down By The River? Sorry, pal. This vid gets an F-
