From Goldeneye 007 to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare via Stargate SG-1, the FN P90 has cemented itself as one of the most iconic SMGs in pop culture. With the help of Jonathan Ferguson, Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK, we break down what makes this unique PDW so iconic, and why games have embraced this weird little SMG.
In this episode of Loadout, Dave Jewitt visits the Royal Armouries to talk to Keeper of Firearms & Artillery Jonathan Ferguson to chat about one of pop culture’s most iconic submachine guns, the P90.

Oh yea ! 👍 Somehow it took me ages to realize, that most of the human weapon systems are far superior to the goa'uld's...its because their behavior, armors and weapons and last but not least, voices are intimidating...but they get bushwacked by human weapons all the time...at least in close quarter combat...the goa'uld have space ships and teleportation and their hand thingys with healing capabilities...so they have that 😅

In one SG-1 episode they have their clones/robot doubles doing missions and you see them going through the Stargate and i thought "Hey, why are they carrying MP5s again?". It made sense because the robots didnt have the newer P90s and was so happy they put the detail into the show. As a kid I loved the P90 in Counter strike, it looked so cool and was so sci-fi even down to its unique loading mechanism. I never thought of it as realistic or functional so my mind was blown researching into this piece and learning how actually it had loads of tactical advantages like the downward bullet ejection or the fact that keeping track of your rounds is easy. And apparently it doesn't jam much despite the wacky feed mechanism! Truly a marvel of engineering.
@YeeSoest
@YeeSoest Год назад
I fell in love with the looks and the easy correcting for recoil (straight up, slowly pull down and you're golden!) made the P90 my go to gun in many cases. My favorite SMG and it even radiates to the point where the 5-7 is my favorite pistol just because it uses the same ammo
@jeffbenton6183
@jeffbenton6183 Год назад
@@YeeSoest In addition to all the other advantages, it seems to me that more police units should carry the P90 and 5-7 because there's less of a risk of stray bullets. The rounds, though (soft) armor-piercing, are lighter than typical 9mm pistol rounds, so they lose energy earlier, so they don't go as far in the event of a miss (though, being faster, they also keep a flatter trajectory longer, making them easier to aim). Although, I don't shoot much, so I guess people can take what I say with a grain of salt.
@thomaswalmsley8959
@thomaswalmsley8959 Год назад
@@jeffbenton6183 it's probably a combo of 2 things. 1) cost p90s are fairly expensive, ARs are cheap in America. 2) it's my understanding also that once the police need to use something longer and packs more of punch, you might as well just get a rifle with an intermediate round, so logical just defaults to AR rifles, instead of weird "super" pistol rounds made to penatrate body armor (which isn't a concern for cops). But the biggest is probably reason #1.

There is a story being told that Stargate SG1 ended up buying so much blank and live ammunition that it was difficult for other owners of P90s to actually get ammunition, including law enforcement and military. In later season's they had to switch the characters to "other guns" for heavy shooting scenes cause they couldn't get blank ammo at all.

As someone who owns a gun that shoots 5.7 ammo , getting ammo is the main reason the 5.7 hasn't exploded in popularity, at a dollar a round it is preeemo ammo compared to being able to get 50 rounds of 9mm for 15 dollars on when its on sale.
@generalilbis
@generalilbis Год назад
I think ammo availability had a big effect on what guns got showcased in Stargate SG1 and Atlantis in general...I've heard tell that another big reason why the P90 became the primary PDW or close-combat weapon in SG1 was that the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq drove 9mm supply through the roof early on and the production team was struggling to get 9mm blank ammo...but there was a lot more 5.7mm available because of the smaller operational use of weapons firing that round.
@freetobe3
@freetobe3 Год назад
@@generalilbis also, later on in the SG1 seasons and movies, Atlantis and Universe too, 5.56 based firearms became much more dominant. I'm betting it's because the AR shot up in popularity in the civilian crowd, the production of 5.56 was stabilizing as the war in Afghanistan carried on so it became easier and cheaper to use them. The G-36 was heavily featured throughout Atlantis and by the end of the show it was pretty much the common alternative to the P90. In Universe I can't even remember seeing the P90 at all.

I had a period where I got into casual airsoft with my friends, and I mainly ran an automatic electric P90 where the magazine was a hopper that held an insane amount of BBs. Much safer for the talent/cast when it ejects downward since they really had fully functional ones loaded with blanks that they shot on screen. A shortage in blanks for the P90 caused by the war in Iraq(?) resulted in the “Carter special” where they made up/invented a gun chambered differently for her for a season to cut down on how many blanks they needed.

@@LastGoatKnight no it doesnt and no Pdws were created to replace smgs enturly in militery use nato wanted to remove smgs so pdws were engisioned in the 80s The PDW is a compact automatic weapon that uses specially designed rifle-like cartridges to fire armor-piercing bullets and are sufficiently light to be used conveniently by non-combatant and support troops, and as an effective close quarters battle weapon for special forces and counter-terrorist groups A smg is a fully automatic carbine that fired a sub riffle caliber , its still a machine gun which are not silect fire unlike pdws

@@LastGoatKnight I don't think there are any hard and fast rules on the definitions of PDWs and SMGs. I'd say an SMG would be a weapon issued to an infantryman to provide compact and mobile firepower and to be used as a primary weapon. I'd say a PDW would be something issued to military personnel whose primary roles are not expected to include fighting the enemy with small arms. Before specific PDWs were invented, such latter troops were issued rifles, carbines or handguns. For example, both my grandfather's carried SMLEs or even the Ross MK3 when about their duties.

The key thing about how it was introduced in SG1 was that it was so matter of fact - this is our tool of choice and why. At the same time Samantha Carter was wealding it in the same way that a surgeon wealds a knife.

The P90 is one of those guns that everyone knows because of it's silhouette. The name is also fairly distinct too which probably helps as well. I remember when I first saw the RC-P90 in GoldenEye. I had no idea it was tied to a real world gun back then. I thought it was something the developers came up with because it would be fun to have in the game.

Another neat thing about the P90: because it ejects shells out of the bottom it's completely ambidextrous. You can wield this gun both left and right handed with zero issue. I believe this was one of the reasons why FN went through all the effort to design that top loading magazine besides trying to make a gun with a high ammo capacity as compact as possible. Another strange one: the Prowler from Apex Legends resembles the P90 is shape, but that's where the comparison ends. That gun is a burst firing SMG that sticks the magazines in the stock instead of the top, likely for animation reasons.

Stargate SG-1 had so much variation in their weapons that it was a joy to watch. Also the first time I did see the Micro 16 and MP7 on screen frequently vs a one off. Tho there in the later seasons the P90 was at times replaced widely by the G36K.... That I personally did not mind.

I used some cheats to get online only stuff marked as done (because well...had no online.) The thing in that game felt like a laser beam and I just was in love with it. The one bad thing about it, is it's a pain to reload realistically in H3VR because of that fun top loading system.

This weapon is all I ever need in any game, even going into rifle range, just pop on a nice short range scope and you're good. Tactical flashlight and laser sights optional, but functional AND badass looking.

I'm a ten years US Navy veteran , radar operator and security . I bought myself an FN PS90 ( civilian version ) of the P90 for Christmas 2022 . The model I own came with standard iron sights and a rail mounted above for attaching optics . The standard iron sight system is very hard to see through and is basically useless . I mounted a ( Vortex Optics ) illuminated reticle 1- 8x low powered variable optic above the basic sights , and it's wonderful to sight through . The current price of 7.5 x 28 mm cartridges runs almost $1USD per round in 2023 . My FN PS90 loaded with one fifty round magazine and two fifty round spare magazines fits into a tennis racket case . I could walk around wearing athletic clothing with a tennis racket case in hand and nobody would suspect I was the most heavily armed man in the vicinity .
