Paatal Lok Series Interview: Saurabh Dwivedi, The Lallantop Editor talks to Amazon Prime TV web Series Paatal Lok (2020) writer & creator Sudip Sharma and director Prosit Roy. Sudip has written films like NH10, Udta Punjab, Sonchiriya and Laal Kaptaan. Prosit has directed Pari starring Anushka Sharma.
In this long conversation they discuss the making of Paatal Lok series. Beginning from the religious references like Savitri (Satyavan) the bitch in the series. Is Neeraj Kabi's character Sanjeev Mehra based on a popular Indian journalist? Is main villain Donalia based on real life dacoit Dadua? Why the face of Hathoda Tyagi's Masterji and main villain Donalia daku is never shown? How Sudip Sharma discovered Kabir Bhajan singer Prahlad Singh Tipanya and later used his song Sakal Hans Me Ram Biraje by Nanak in the series? Also the philosophy of the song and the series.
They discuss the slap scene where Hathiram (Jaideep Ahlawat) is taking his son Siddharth (Bodhisattva Sharma) somewhere and wife Renu (Gul Panag) tries to stop him. Hathiram slaps her and goes away. When he comes back, Renu gives the slap back. Sudip tells about the TV show which is a gold standard for him and many times better than Paatal Lok. He's talking about HBO's The Wire. Sudip even goes on to say that people should leave Paatal Lok and watch The Wire first.
He talks about the writing process of creating Muslim and Dalit characters like Imran Ansari (Ishwak Singh) and Tope Singh Manjar aka Chaaku (Jagjeet Sandhu). Sudip also reveals what shocked him while doing it. Also the status of censorship and self censorship in a writer's mind while writing a script in India given the sensitivity around caste and religion, particularly about his state since the Udta Punjab CBFC cuts issue that has troubled him a lot.
The most horrifying and disturbing scene of Paatal Lok which does not pertains to Hathoda Tyagi. Saurabh Dwivedi says he was terrified by that scene where a child (Cheeni) is sexually assaulted. He asks if the beef eating and mob lynching scenes were organic? They also talk about the selection of casting director Abhishek Banerjee as Hathoda Tyagi in Paatal Lok. Sudip Sharma says Abhishek was scared before doing the role of Hathoda Tyagi.
