Actually, the way the game works, Pac-Man will respond to events differently depending on his mood, and there are like, 13 moods in the game. There are also a lot of interactions in the game. Hell, I don't even know if I began to scrape down to half of the interactions.

If he's angry or enraged, he will try to race up the ladder, lose his footing and fall to the ground. However, he will rap himself on the head and then climb the ladder in a positive mood.

@Sum1Important I spent the past decade wondering the exact same thing. I know how to get him to do it, but what he's doing is beyond me. You have to have him in the super depressed mood to trigger it. He'll automatically do it when he sees the bench. For the longest time, it prevented me from continuing the game. You get him out by shooting one of the apples. He'll come out and eat it and revert to his normal mood.
