Pac-Man is an arcade game that became an instant worldwide classic. Originally developed by Namco for Arcades, Midway the american publisher of the game worked with Coleco to produce a portable arcade game version. Today on the show, I'll be reviewing the machine and giving my thoughts on it's design, differences, and gameplay.
This unit was loaned to me by the awesome folks at Retro Replay in Cambridge, Ontario!

You have to admit, it's pretty damn neat how creative they got in order to get around the limitations of a vfd display for this game.

I always wanted one of these but my parents could never afford it. I remember kids bringing these in for show&tell at school but good luck trying to get a shot at playing it with 20 other kids wanting to play it as well lol. Well 35 years later and I finally own Pac-man. I picked one up at a flea market today for $25 and to my surprise it still works. Other than the sound it's really not that bad. I think for the technology at the time Coleco nailed it.

This was the first version of Pac-Man I played, and man that opening jingle has stuck with me and it's just an exstacy shot everytime I hear it (not that often anymore since I think our Pac-Man mini arcade broke)

What a beautifully exectuted review on all levels! As a kid, I was so envious that the neighbors kids had this device and I'd always go over there to play it, much to their annoyance. Now as an adult I decided to buy one off Ebay. But of course the experience isn't as fun as I remember it hehe. You explain well why that is. Still a nice thing to have on the shelf.

This version also had third game on it called "Eat and Run" in which featured a maze with no dots and just the 4 energizers. The goal was to avoid the ghosts and eat all 4 energizers (which did not make the ghosts edible) The game was a product of its time with very limited LCD and sound yet the collection sold like hotcakes

I had the donkey Kong coleco mini when I was a kid. Sat in the dark for hours playing that game. Great stuff!!! If you were a kid when this came out you would not be so critical. Glad I came up when I did in the gaming world. Started with pong, and atari 2600. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I had the Coleco Mini Arcade toys of Pac-Man, Galaxian and Frogger, and I totally agree what you said about the imperfect controls on Pac-Man. Out of all those three that I owned, I probably enjoyed Frogger the best because I owned it longer. Also, I never could find that power pack that you mentioned, so every toy ate batteries like Pac-Man ate power pellets.

My cousin and I really enjoyed the mini coleco Pac-man. We didn't mind its sound and, contrary to the reviewer, we found the joystick was easy to operate. I vaguely remember us abandoning the two player mode because as one players pac-man's score went up the other players score was decreased and vice versa. We preferred taking turns and cheering each other on.

The portable games of the early era were pretty creative. I remember playing a Defender table-top unit which was quite fun. Loved the look of these, and the Pac-Man shaped one Coleco also made. I have the Perma-Power battery replacements in my Colecovision steering wheel. Always thought they were kind of neat.

2:56 lol. I had this thing 30(?) years ago. I remember my father complaining about the anoying sound while I played it over and over in the back of our car on journeys. I ended up putting tape on those speaker grills; which diedn't help much lol. nice to hear that sound again. love the intro song lol

The VFDs did have one thing over the later LCD game displays: brightness that resemble the arcade graphics themselves. And the combined ghost/dot/pac man at least give you a way to see when the ghost is ready to eat by seeing when the pac man in the head is on or off. The later LCD versions don't have that going on, with the three elements being separate and relatively small. It can be hard to tell if a ghost is passing by, or about to eat you until it's too late.

Man, Shane, I am half way through the video and had to leave a comment on how well this has been edited, I can now understand the Tweets and which direction you are hoping to change the channel. This editing, I love it. When other RU-vidrs review a game it seems to be more based on them (camera wise) but this is mostly on the game and not on you. Keep up the good work mang. You're going to go far. :D

The ghost look like so grotesque. Gives me the spooks, man. Excellent stuff! The way you've sown this unit off, as with Galaxian and even Mario's Cement Factory a while back, show off the design of these units well; those little details shouldn't even be lost on people! I've played one of these, and I'll second your comment on the joysticks; they feel very squishy in the unit I toyed with!

I still have mine, sadly it doesn't work and I'm afraid to take it apart. I LOVE this video, the camera work, the close ups, the historical information, the production value, you name it. This is what I'm shooting for, I'm one week into YouTubing with next to zero technology and budget, but hope to reach your quality level soon. Thanks so much for posting this video, I am going to share on my page.

Really nicely put together, Sounds good, Looks good and it flowed well... cracking job with this one. I've never seen one of these before but that's probably due to me being over seas... not sure if we had something like this in the UK. The design of the unit is pretty nice especially considering the limitations.... the battery/power solution was pretty neat as well.

I had this as a kid in the 80s! It was hands down the best thing I have ever owned and I really miss it :( Agreed the sound is awful. I pretty quickly learned to play it with the sound off. The sound is so bad that having the sound on actually made the game harder, it was distracting. Sound off also saved batteries (until my mom got me that power adapter you listed.) I was 8 when these came out. I got good enough that I could effectively play without dying indefinitely and simply shut it off when I got bored or had to do something else. I really miss mine.

The new LCD mini arcades by Basic Fun are worth a review by you. (Most of them) are really well recreated and really fun to play. My personal favorites are the LCD versions of Q*Bert, Centipede, and Ms. Pacman. If you review them, be sure not to pick up the dot-matrix versions of these games by Basic Fun, but pick up the LCD versions.

I have a memory on how I was first introduced to video games. I remember playing a Pac-Man game where you are in a gray hall and you go and choose what namco game you want to play. I think it was on PlayStation or something. I was 5 or 6 years old that time. I suck at Pac-Man.

As a contrast, I love how now all that's needed for a mini arcade machine for a game is simply a ROM dump of the arcade game being played on the mini arcade machine through emulation. I think they use possibly a custom version of MAME, but I could be completely wrong since I don't know how they make the decisions on how to emulate the old games.

I happen to still own one of these. I've never played it all that much, which is probably why it's still in playable condition. The joysticks aren't great, but they are usable. The sound is pretty obnoxious, though (and the primary reason I don't play this often). I do remember reading some gaming or electronics magazine where they showed how you could modify the unit so that it took an external joystick (Atari 2600) and added a volume control dial.

Hey Rerez, I saw the Coleco Tabletop version of Pac-Man on a game show called "Starcade". More specifically, Episodes 1-10 when Mark Richards was the host at the time and the Coleco Tabletop version of Pac-Man was featured as a prize for getting 3 out of 4 games right on the "Super Prize Round". There's this small business toy store near where I live. The guy who owns it had them laying around and wanted to get rid of them. He gave them to me cheap since both of them have issues with the batteries (they wont stay in properly even with the battery cover on it) and the stickers on one are either gone or peeling. I fixed this by taking a folded up piece of paper and taping it to the inside of the battery cover for extra support.

I think the fact that it was 1981 should be taken into consideration. Pac Man was released in the arcades in 1980, and the horrible 2600 version didn't come out until 1982. So in 1981, what was a Pac Man fan to do? TOMY made a cool looking, flat yellow version, but I'm not sure of the year of release...

I Still have the Pac Man and Donley Kong Of these in great condition! I grew up in the 80's and it is amazing how far games ave come BUT I would STILL prefer being in an original arcade and Im not talking one of the modern ones either. I want that dim lit cigarette smoke filled loud 80.s arcade! The new games are somewhat cool but the arcades just dont have the same vib they did back then. They were their own reality in a sense!

I got this version when I was about 9 or 10 yrs old. I loved it ! but it tore through batteries like nobody's business ! & the sound was excessively {{ LOUD }} I really wish that coleco would have added a volume control knob to turn it down. I ultimately ended up wearing out the joysticks as I would play it constantly ! It's funny. As a kid I didn't notice the noise so much. I could only imagine how much it must have gotten on my Mom & Dads nerves now that I think of it. >_

Its funny because in 1982 this was cutting edge for portable gaming and I question a "review" based on what we know decades later, as opposed to keeping the critiques in line with that era. 30 years from now someone will crap on our games because he or she will be playing 4D games with mind control. Then, someone 30 years after that will do the same. So, the fact that you could have a mini arcade machine of the world's most popular game in your own home was in and of itself AMAZING despite its techical short comings BY TODAY'S STANDARDS..
