Pace RC429 G Pack: Does Rad Gravel Cosplay Really Work On A Trail Hardtail?

I'm a big fan of Pace's RC429 ultra versatile steel hardtail in it's T-Pack trail format, but I wasn't sure it would work in the frigid fork and drop bar G-Pack build. Find out whether I was right to worry or not as I ride an extended version of the Paradise MTB Trail from Sutton Bank bikes together with Jo Burt and Claire Frecknall.

Thanks for the review. Really interesting bike. I like the idea of mtb geometry inspired gravel bikes that will take at least a 50mm tyre (2.X even better). If you’re not racing but riding trails with mates, doing some endurance events, and maybe doing light over night (in a pub) adventuring, this seems like the ideal. Gives you that mountain bike confidence on steep and loose washboard descents.

Been holding out for this review as the drop bar version looks brilliant. I was thinking about building it with a 120mm fox 32 on the front rather than the rigid fork, seem to be a few riders putting drop bars on hard tails with some success these days and i think the 429 is perfect for that. Not sure whether the suspension fork is required after watching this though!

@AndrewWebber66 4 месяца назад
I doubt it's required for a blast around the woods. Is it required in the dark and wet trying to get to a campsite? Maybe..... Especially if you're tired out and can't pick the lines so well. Saying that, I bought the rigid fork...

@@GuyKesTV yeah it'll be great for long tours and banging about in the woods without having to worry too much. Ideal for Scotland, it'll even fit spikes.

It seems like it's on a par with my Cotic Cascade, absolute belter of an all rounder.....! It's great for everything except racing, great review Guy :)

Looks interesting! I have a Fairlight Secan as my gravel bike and have been using it with 650b wheels.Great in some cases but wouldn't mind trying a gravel bike with 29er wheels. This could be an option but I have been looking at the Cotic Cascade and the new Kinesis .The Cascade seems to have that duel personality with some nice flat bar XC builds and is a little better looking than the Pace! Interesting to see where this goes!

I looked at all of those but settled on the Pace because I always wanted one back in the day. They all have their strengths and weaknesses I guess but for what I have in mind the Pace will be ideal

I'm ordering a new frame Friday because I want 2.60 mazza front and rear but I might build a gravel with this velocite, I wish gravel bikes was about in the early 90s, I bought a racer and only took it out once and my wrist was killing me so back out road riding on my mtb

I was in the Pace Shop in Thornton Le Dale yesterday and the bike was in the shop. I looks amazing and I had to leave before I was tempted to buy it. Stunning bit of kit.

I was on the very same trails today, I'm sort of gravalising my one one whippet, selcof rigid carbon fork, 38t chaining , tyres are Wolfpack speed rear, racing Ralph front. I'm looking for a faster tyre for the tarmac any ideas? At the mo it's coming in at 22 lb so nice and light drop bars could be a option, I'll have a think.
@andyramsdale6435
@andyramsdale6435 4 месяца назад
Conti Terra hardpack is a 50mm tyre, quick but not that much grip, or the Conti race king I think it is. If speed is on your mind look at the rolling resistance website.

I'll have a look at the website, what with summer coming something light and fast would be good. It's surprising just how much time you spend on tarmac, especially on the longer rides. Thanks for the reply.

The cheapest mtb frame on ebay The velocite flux xl frame would make a good gravel bike frame at £80 , it uses a 30bb and you can just get 2.25 rear , very light to

My first build, 36mm forks, nukeproof front wheel and bars. I'm disabled and can't walk far but with a hub motor on the rear I'm back in the seat, I do a quick 20 miles down the guided bus route to Cambridge and I get cyclists on racers grabbing my slip stream

@@GuyKesTV Making up a gravel bike from parts on Ebay, Pinkbike, etc as cheap as possible and seeing what you end up with would be a great review.
