I’m 70 and have exercised daily since I was 25 years old. I now have Parkinson’s Disease and, just recently, a pacemaker. As an aside, I would likely have died if not for my Apple Watch catching episodes of low heart rate (25-35 BPM) over a 3 week period. I found your channel and I’m very grateful for your content. You cover a lot of general fitness tips along with some very specific information for people like me. Glad I found you and thanks for taking the time to make these videos. Jim in Oregon

Thank you for sharing this information. I'm a cyclist and have logged over 35,000 miles in the last 7 years. I walk about 50 miles a month on average...aside from work. I jog some but not a full on run..due to service related injuries. Unfortunately I suffered 2 heart attacks in the last 2 weeks. Total surprise! Now I have a ICD....a defibrillator. ❤ I'm here to find out what I'll be able to do.

I've had a pacemaker since I was 9 years old. 32 now, will be 33 this year, and I've had 6 surgeries. 5 to replace them and 1 to replace leads because they all died much faster than normal since I've always been an energetic person. I was never allowed to do contact sports after my 1st pacer. Lifting heavy weights is a no no as well. I manage to get in pull ups, push ups, DB curls, squats, sit ups, and DB presses just to stay active but the most I do is 25lbs because it takes a huge toll on the chest from all my scarring and nerve damage. Many years of work to even get some progress and sometimes I have to quit for a couple weeks cause too much muscle is more pain in the chest and it's not from soreness.

I am on my third defibrillator and the most recent one was put in to replace one that had a malfunctioning lead. Did you learn from your doctors what happened with your leads? My doctors weren’t sure. I’m pretty active and was doing overhead presses, bench presses with moderate weight and other Olympic lifts when the lead failed. I was shocked 16 times in about 45 minutes. I’m worried about going back to weight lifting. It sure it was the cause but I’m still skittish about it

@@user-ir1jr8rk1j I am from the US. It is a Biotronic and the battery can last up to 10 years. Actual battery life depends on if the defibrillator discharges frequently, draining the battery, and how much pacing it has to do. I think they say 6-8 years before replacing battery.

Please be warned, scar tissue can and will form with no discrepancy, it made itself known in my shoulder over time and limited my arm movement. It took 16 months out of the 2 years I've had my pacemaker implant to begin tearing apart so I'm getting full functionality of my arm. Now i might be one of the rare instances but i just thought i would add this comment so others will know whats going on, it took me awhile to convince my cardiologist that i was having an issue, I'm just now receiving shoulder rehab.

Ester

Most manufacturers would be unwilling to exceed the level of previous ratings to 6 ATA. Also, having a pacemaker may be a good reason not to get into technical diving, where an immediate return to the surface would not be possible if there are complications. So this is not merely a matter about the pacemaker but about a risk-benefit assessment involving the underlying reason for the pacemaker, the type of diving that is planned, and whether exercise is possible with a particular pacemaker. We do not encourage divers with implanted pacemaker defibrillators to continue scuba diving, irrespective of the depth.

I'm scared to death of getting shocked by my pacemaker. I'd rather die than zapped again. The last time I was just getting over vomiting sickness. Probably had no electrolytes and I tried to carry a door out to the trash just to do something from being sick. It Zapped me halfway to the garage right in front of a bunch of people. Half the ppl kept asking me what drugs I was on and called the 911 telling them I was overdosing. They just couldn't believe someone my age could have heart problems and a pacemaker could have a ICD build in that could shock me. Some neighbors kept insulting me by asking me repeatedly "just tell me what drugs you're on so we can tell the paramedics". I was completely humiliated and they wouldn't let me just go back in my house. They forced me to stay there wait for the paramedics. My heart was back beating normal.

Might be a bit late but i just wanna give you my opinion about this topic. Ive got a pacemaker for about 15 years now. Out of those 15 years, i've been doing bodybuilding for about 8 years. From my personal experience, its normal to have some pain after an intense workout since the muscle is full of blood and pumped up, which results in pushing/pinching the pacemaker. Other than that, i've never experienced any issues regarding the pacemaker. Because of my heavy exercising, i'm visiting the doc every 3 months to get a check up. The harder your workout is, the more stress you're putting on the leads and the higher the risk of damaging them is. But even though the risk is higher, it still isnt that big of a deal and especially nowadays the pacemaker and its leads are built with such a high quality, that you can easily do workouts without having to worry about possible injuries. I really hope i could take some of your worries and if you've got any more questions, feel free to ask them :)

your ICD was probably tricked into thinking you were having tachycardia. You can set the ICD so that it waits longer before delivering a shock and it can be set at a higher beat per minute before sensing trouble. I had the same thing happen. I was shocked twice while running hard. My doctor took about 2 years to kind of get the settings right for my lifestyle.

Do pacemakers help with palpitations or extra beats? I get them everynow and than and we were considering options on what would be best to stop them. Whenever I exert myself rlly hard while running or doing dances i’ll get an extra beat or thud in my chest and it’s really scary. I still have to get it checked out but I’m just curious if Pacemakers help prevent that?

@ExerciseForHealth Год назад
Not sure what the answer is to this. Best to speak to your doctor who might know.
@kevinmartin6444
@kevinmartin6444 Год назад
Yes it can. I have extra beats even at rest, and there is some lack of coordination between the two lower chambers of my heart due to scars from sarcoidosis. The result is inefficient electrical signal and inefficient pumping of blood. There is something called cardiac resynchronization therapy that might be helpful to you, i dont know, and it uses a pacemaker. I also take some heart medications (beta blocker and ACE inhibitor) that make it difficult to really get my heart going and keeps my blood pressure low.

I am back to high intensity weightlifting and feel much better by doing it. I can’t live as a prisoner of a device. What are my risks? So far, no issues with the ICD after doing a remote test after a couple of months of intensive weight training.

I was doo.g weight training. Nothing heavy or out of the ordinary. After about a month of working out I had to be rushed to emergency surgery to fix a broken lead on my pacemaker. The doctor said absolutely no more working out.... is he being Overcautious or what. He originally said you can work out and stress your heart Luke anyone else and now says I can't do anything
@DeepDownTheRabbitHole
@DeepDownTheRabbitHole 2 года назад
That is shocking.. why was it an emergency surgery? I am terrified to exercise because of potentially lead breaking.. what movement did you make that made it break and how did you notice?
@ExerciseForHealth
@ExerciseForHealth 2 года назад
WOW! I've not heard of anything like this before. Obviously it's recommended that you are cautious for the first 12 weeks after have the pacemaker fitted to allow the body to heal. Unless you were doing a movement that placed a huge amount of stress on the site of the pacemaker like deep range dumbbell chest flyes or something, I can't see how exercise would have caused it. However, I'm not a cardiologist so would always take the advice of the experts, but at the same time, I'm sure that doing no exercise at all would be far worse in the long run.

What about any drugs that you have to take with a ICP/pacemaker like blood thinners?
@ExerciseForHealth

Blood thinners will reduce the likelihood of clots, but shouldn't affect how you exercise, other than the guidance in this video.

Yes, it should be OK providing he doesn't feel uncomfortable doing it, and he has no other underlying heart conditions.

Hi, sir I am from India. I am 65 years now. I got my pacemaker in April 2021. I also have family history of Cardio myopathy. I do treadmill brisk walk for 3 kms everyday and 5 Kg weight on each arm and some chest press etc. I do for 5 days a week. But I get breathless while climbing the steps. Please advise if I am exercising right or should I reduce my gym workout. Thanks.

It's difficult for me to answer individual questions as I don't know everything about the person. From the brief description of what you have said, it might be OK, but it's probably worth speaking to a cardiac nurse for tailored advice.

I had new batteries put in my pacemaker 9 years ago, but I was wondering if its generally safe to lift heavy weights such as dumbells, barbells and generally just working the whole body? I've been lifting for about 2-3 months now, without knowing if its actually dangerous to do.
@ExerciseForHealth
@ExerciseForHealth 2 года назад
It depends on what you had the pacemaker fitted for, but if you've not experienced any discomfort or issues in the last 2-3 months and you've obviously had it for a very long time, then it may be OK.

I would start with a gentle mix of cardio and light to moderate weights (not too heavy), however because of you age, you would be well advised to seek the advice of a doctor on what you can do now as they will offer you expert advice tailored to you.

Not sure, that's very much a medical question for the device itself.

This is not medical advice. Just had my lead wire replaced in heart, I asked my surgeon after the surgery how they got the old screw out of the heart. He said they had to laser burn it out and then screw the new one in nearby. Scar tissue will eventually form around the screw. Ask your doctor to be sure for proper medical advice.

You should use Google more brother. These videos are not very helpful. You can do ANYTHING with an ICD/Pacemaker. Don't worry. Be smart and ofc only do it after healed up. I worry to sometimes but I've had mine since 2012. Not a damn problem. No shock, perfect leads and I do whatever I want to. Peace! And good luck.

@@riktigtbilligaresor thanks. Yeah your right. I had mines for less than a year so everything is new. It’s an odd little device I tell you. Funny story I already got shocked! I was jogging too hard. They made a few adjustments to increase the threshold so it shouldn’t happen again. Getting shocked was the craziest experience lol. It’s funny thinking back on it but damn did it stop me in my tracks. I went from Captain America to a boxer who dropped his mouth piece.
