A plant profile of the legendary Pachypodium namaquanum, a winter growing pachycaul tree from South Africa.
In this video, I provide some background information about the plant in its native habitat, as well as an overview of how to keep it in cultivation.
A fantastic caudex plant

Keep going - this channel is bound explode! Most informative + researched plant videos i've seen. Well presented, you have great charisma. Appreciate the lack of standard 'RU-vid' gimmick stuff. Can't wait for more videos, cheers. 🤝

Where would one cut for cuttings? Seems like you could only decapitate it and therefore get only one cutting - and will the base regenerate? I have a bunch of very large (5-6’) P. geayi and lamerei that I was thinking of cutting up for propagation. They have multiple growing points/ branches

I can’t see my initial reply, so in case it has been lost to the void, I’ll try again. The base should regenerate fine but as you say, you’d only get the one head from decapitating it anyway. I suspect the main reason you’d need to root a cutting is if you’ve beheaded it because the plant has root rot.

with dormancy i am experiencing (from southern california) from mine, do i water or wait till the leaves start to grow again? since you are aussie, does mine grow in winter or summer?

The plants don’t pay attention to the calendar month, their dormancy is determined by the climate. So these being winter-growers, they’ll grow in winter whether in the northern or southern hemisphere. Basically - start watering when you start to notice it pushing out new leaves. When the leaves turn yellow and fall off, stop watering.
