But aha skillup! You sir... are wrong! For this game must contain at least a single reflective surface, As clearly It seems to contain the ultimate, Nay penaltimate In reflective surface technology... a working mirror! And while over the years in video games, We often are gifted with The Specular highlight, The Fong, Even perhaps The mighty cube map... Hell they just give away those screenspace Effects for free, if you want them or not LOL... But... None of those Can even compare to the actual working mirror... It is an old technology, ancient... Said to Originate From a much more advanced Civilization... But the knowledge was handed down by Druidic witches, And very rare for Outsiders to be bestowed upon.... Naturally John Carmack was one of them of course... These are so rare and there is so much put into them by their creators, it is said that If you were to shatter one, The very universe would bend against you for What could be as long as 7 whole years... Now I understand how you could confuse this as a non reflective surface as it simply seems as if there's just more game world in that mirror... But to you I say that is what a real reflection is, a pure reflection, even a window into the soul... But developers, Especially the modern ones, They don't understand what it is, how to use it, And often good enough cheap alternatives That can be blended in with Effects of broken high five equipment or smeary lenses Can sometimes distract a youth long enough to not stare too long or just break their Eyes, So that it is painful to look at... But a mirror, Especially a clean one, It requires no special grain, No JJ Abrams flare, No cheap 90s Polarizing filter With Vaseline to chromatically Aborate... It just... Mirrors... They were more common back before the great smearing But I can Understand why if they had one possession, these developers would most certainly want to use it... Fun fact, If it hasn't been coated with auntie glare, If you have a flashlight in the game, you can replicate the Abrams effect By shining a laser pointer at the right angle and blinding yourself, This can also be used as a powerful weapon If it has been Blessed with the right Enchantments..
I just realized it's kind of ironic that Squarespace is such a big sponsor yet you don't have a website (as far as I know). I know you used to at least. I'm curious what meaningful website presence you could create seeing as how your vids are already so jam packed with value. Good problem to have I guess! :)
It seems WAY more in depth than people were expecting. Isla from Easy Allies described it as almost like a car survival sim. Nobody expected this much depth or this many systems in place, but I am loving the looks of it all.
The amount of customization you can do with your car made me so damn happy, making my own Ghostbusters Ectomobile has been a dream of mine since I was a kid and this is the closest I've seen to making that happen.
Lol, ikr. I was thinking man I'd sure like to make this look like the Ghostbusters vehicle. I've seen that the car is very customizable so hopefully I can make it look kinda similar.
@@kwizaora Neither did I. I asked the question to see if the rest of the video intrigued, changed, or influenced their opinion at all. It did for me and I provided my experience
this game is incredibly interesting to me as a Washingtonian, seeing a game so accurately recreate the day-to-day life of an average peninsula resident
Yep, I live in Vancouver (the one across the border) but I've been down to the peninsula before. Was pretty hard getting passed that wall. They've nailed it.
The example of "feels like a couch precariously balanced on a shopping cart" hit me in my soul. Almost like that exact situation has happened to me in the past. Love it!
The game also has roguelite elements for heavy replayability. It's hype AF. Also I love early on a character tells you that you're going to get supernaturally attached to the car, like the developers knew and came up with an in universe justification with how fiddly and insane you would become upgrading it.
I haven't watched this yet, but driving over the pacific ocean sounds awesome. Austin, blink twice if this usurper is holding you and your channel hostage.
There's this artbook called The Electric State that hits this vibe almost perfectly. So much so that I wonder if it wasn't an inspiration for pacific drive.
WOW! I totally forgot about Pacific Drive after the first trailer came out, which i absolutely loved. Glad to see that there is a great game behind those gorgeous visuals and atmosphere. This is such a vibe-game to play on a cold, rainy evening.
It is much more so, Stalenhag's Electric Drive, which is an illustration book which matches the game matches that style and vibe much more than Stalker
I've been incredibly interested in this game since it was revealed. The whole concept just speaks to me in a unique way that not many other games have.
@@hkr667 Apart from 15fps, yes. Yes and more. Get a car stuck in the mud, so you have to go back to your garage to build another car to pull the first car out of the mud, and eventually get the second car stuck too while rescuing the first car, and go build a third car to get both cars out of the mud.
I think what I'm hoping for with this game is that it provides the same kind of vibe as the Top Gear / Grand Tour specials where they buy cheap, old cars and travel through Vietnam, Bolivia or Mongolia. Even as someone who doesn't care much about cars, those tend to empart a kind of weird nostalgia and humanity to old machinery that I wish more racing games could provide.
I appreciate that you mentioned this being a survival game early. I don't like survival games. You saved me 16 minutes of something I wouldn't be interested in.
The car customization reminds me of the Mad Max game, only this one is focused on survival and not combat. If this game has the same or greater level of customization Mad Max had, then it might actually be engaging. Here's hoping it will be
I've never been a fan of the Horror genre, but this weird "always on your toes semi-horror" is genius and the sounds always coming from everywhere and nowhere at once makes this special
I drove one of those station wagons with the wood panels and they definitely were a pain to drive, especially compared to modern cars. I even drove cars that didn't have power steering so it's accurate that the car doesn't handle the best or stop quickly. Those cars were heavy so they're not a nimble as cars of today. I'm sure there will be improvements to handling but hopefully not too much so it keeps the feeling of driving one of those beasts.
I love the idea of driving in video games. I played a lot of racing games that never really scratched thst driving itch, there just wasn't a lot going on other than just mechanical mastery of the driving physics of said game and then just driving around in circles. The driving games I have enjoyed are the ones are the more open world ones where it expands what you can do in the car. I have a feeling this game is going to scratch a very particular itch for me.
driving through the pacific northwest was the best part of days gone. i have a personal connection to this type of experience since i made a trip to the region years back. so i’m always excited to play games that emulate that experience. this looks to be far more up my alley than even days gone was
Yeah days gone had a great vibe but the gameplay just couldn’t live up to its potential imo. Felt v bad to actually play, even on the harder difficulties
@@Garbageman28 I really enjoyed Days Gone a lot. I'd even say it is a better post apocalyptic zombie game than last of us. But I can see the slow start turning some people away.
Yeah. The controls are little strange. On top of it it has a little weird mechanism of "hold to activate" on everything including taking a step (and steps have set length and you CAN hurt yourself by walking into the car.)
I'm assuming there's an upgrade to roll down the window... But if you can't get it back up again, on my old Honda I stuffed a couple of jars and soda cans in the door so that I could park somewhere in Seattle and not lose all my things... Fresh air not guaranteed but.. I mean once the windows is down it's like permanently fresh you know until you hit Tacoma...
Tbh, they could've contacted Simon Stålenhag and made this into an The Electric State or Tales from the Loop game, it seems. Has ton of the same feels.
My excitement for this game dropped as the video went on. "Its clunky and screws you over, things break to a point you can't even drive properly, the controls are confusing and messy" I'll keep it in my wishlist, but I'll wait for the reviews and maybe some patches before looking at it again
As far as how the car drives, honestly I think that's the point, the car is a piece of shit at the beginning that you have to upgrade. But this is a survival game in a car so I suspect to keep the tension up there will always be dangers and stuff that goes wrong to keep things exciting and not boring.
I've been following this game for awhile, live in the PNW, and love to drive through it on the weekends but noped out of the demo after the first resource gathering checkpoint. The UI is clunky and confusing. It's on rails and the game loop is stressful. The constant radio voice chatter is grating. So, I guess this wasn't made for me.
I recall having a dream a few weeks before this was announced that was very similar in concept. It was about driving your car through an alien otherworld, avoiding monsters and maintaining/upgrading your vehicle along the way. Except the world looked kinda like a mix between a generic post-apocalypse and Redfall (for some reason), the main enemies were these fast zombie-like monsters (think _I Am Legend_ ) that rushed the car and started climbing aboard as it drove, and the game seemed more linear and sprawling in direction (like your main objective is following one really long main road across multiple areas, with side roads scattered about for exploration and side objectives). I remember thinking to myself how cool of a concept it seemed and wishing something like that existed, then _Pacific Drive_ was announced I was like "... huh...". They're obviously not the same thing, but this is close enough and seems to adhere to the granularity I often enjoy in games. I've been eagerly looking forward to its release.
@@quantum5661 Maybe, lol. I also once had a fever dream that involved me being Spiderman while swinging through New York City at night, in the rain, during a brownout/partial blackout. Moody as fuck, still waiting for Insomniac to jump on that one.
This game reminds of Outer Wilds mixed with Death Stranding. Traversing through dangerous, rugged areas while exploring and feeling that tactile feel of every button you touch and every repair you do. Though serious, it's gonna be some serious Artax leveling of begging to the car to keep going.
Recently I've discovered I really love this specific survival genre where you have a vehicle that becomes your "base" you need to upgrade and take care of. I found this through playing Dredge, absolutely loving it, and then completing both of the FAR games in a weekend and loving both of them. I was apprehensive about this one since it seemed more horror inspired but after watching just the first couple of minutes, that thought has been dispelled and I'm excited to play it. I felt the same about Dredge at first and that was one of my favorite game experiences of all time
Doesn't sound like a game for me, unfortunately, but I am glad that a game as unique as this holds up as well as it does. Even if it's not for me, it's always good to hear about a good game.
As an Australian I like to think you struggled with having the wheel on the left side of the car as much as I did while watching this review. Great work.
I hope whomever does the game guide formats it in the style of those old "AAA" trip guides that you could get prior to a road trip back in the 60's and 70's.
I've been VERY excited for this game for a long time, so I've been watching a ton of the Demo VoDs this past week or two. The first few streamers I watched had no problems with the UI, but later ones were struggling which was very frustrating to watch. Like: Dude, the thing is Right There and the text on screen says what to do next! I also expected the Bunnies to be more common. Can't wait for the public demo during NextFest & already pre-ordered the full game.
Really like the premise of this game. The whole upgrading vehicle to travel further sounds so fun. Can’t wait to build a car that can go around the whole map
I just tried out the Steam Next Fest demo, and it looks like the user interface has already been given a once-over since this early access build was given out. Just the color-coding of the different resources that you pick up already makes the UI wayyyyyy more readable at a glance, which helped out when scanning through lockers and toolboxes.
Imagine if this was compatable with force feedback racing wheels. Out of the car you use your controller/ keyboard & mouse, but when you get in the car, you grab the wheel. Step on the gas and Feel the poor clunker fight you as you try and get it out of the path of danger in one piece. I don't think any game has ever done that, but this one sure would be an amazing first.
Can't wait for this one! In fact I might come back to the video later because I don't want to spoil anything. I'm getting a bit of an 'Area X' vibe of this.
I think the problem with the UI is that it feels like a generic sci fi UI. It needs to be more diegetic or possibly minimal. Guess that may have taken a lot more effort and coding on their part though.
Honestly this looks great, but I’m happy to have seen the fiddliness of the ui and respect so I can safely respond this from my wishlist and make more room and time for everything else on my backlog.
Thanks so much for covering this! I've been seeing it on several channels for several days and I thought it looked great which is really funny because I'm typically not a survival, crafting game fan. It's great to see my favorite RU-vidr cover this and hopefully bring a lot more attention to this refreshing and different indie game. I rarely pre-order games but I'm going to pre-order this one. It's 10% off in the PS Store right now until launch and it's only $26.99. At this point I've been watching several hours of videos of gameplay from different channels and the comments have been very positive unlike some other games like oh, I don't know... Suicide Squad for example lol. (Sorry jk) but honestly the game seems to be something special and unique. The RU-vidr Raptor has loaded a series of videos several hours long where he has completed the demo's story but has continued to go back and farm/explore and kept unlocking new items, features, and upgrades. Excited for the game's release, and also your review! Hopefully it controls a little better or easier on console. Thanks again for all the awesome work you put into your videos!! 👍
First time hearing about this game. Looked cool, then I heard "survival game" and my eyes glazed over. I have bounced off every single survival game I've ever tried to get into.
This game looks really dope!! I remember you mentioning that you have started to find time reading a bit more, and if you like this setting you shoukd absolutely pick up "Roadside Picnic". It is a very apparent inspiration for the worldbuilding and is a classic for a reason!!
pov: you're ryan fucking gosling stuck in a deserted jungle alone with hailing lightning storms and a slewfest of radioactive while blaring kavinsky's nightcall and a real hero playing over the radio using mods and i'm totally become an number one ryan gosling fan
