14:05, interesting to see Bloody Ridge again as my late Dad and Mum took us up there in 1968/69 when we were living in Honiara. I recall a quonset round hut backed into one ridge near by. We were finding spent and live rifle ammunition on the ground there, back then. No memorials then as the official Japanese Surrender terms were still in force, no Japanese companies were allowed to operate there at that time. Went to school there if course etc… it was a treasured time with many interesting memories. Thanks Laurie NZ. 😊

Thx for posting this video Ross, you have totally changed my opinion of cruising which l formally thought was boring but you showed me the fun side of it. BTW, l am a fellow maritime modeller which is how l discovered your channel. Keep up the good work in both areas.

16:10. Mmmm cant agree sorry, its more like a difference between peoples, Malaita and Guadalcanal. Also indicated by the 150 languages in the Solomons. In my experience quite strong and well known behaviour differences between the two. We were warned of Malaitamen having a fiery reputation compared to the more laid back people on Guadalcanal etc. I can still see this at our front door once. Fyi. Laurie NZ. 😊😊

Thanks Ross. We were on the June Solomon Island cruise. We went snorkelling at Kiriwini but now wished we had visited the village also. Coming back next year with son/daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren. Just wondering how you contacted / met up with Sam and Becky or any other contacts. It will be a great insight for our 10 and 11 yo grandchildren.

They had been recommended from a previous cruise. We asked people at the end of the pier if anyone knew Sam and Becky and we found them immediately. Lots of others would love to show you around. (Some wear ID around their necks). Just ask them to show you around their home, village, garden, school etc. Make sure you get kina before you get to the island as they can't use AUD there. 100 kina would be seen as wonderful by them and great value for you. When tourists pay with AUD it is such a nuisance for the Islanders. They try to change them for kina at the end of the day but are rarely successful.

Recommend using 5g when in port on day 1

That's what we do, then buy the Internet package on Day 2 while it is at a reduced price.

18:25. Sorry to see that happened but I have a small booklet published by a RC priest that discussed this aspect of village life in the Solomons back then. I will try and find it to pass on the title etc. I encourage you to get it and read it. It ties in to why there are about 150 languages and human behaviour. I think they may have run afoul of locally accepted boundaries and inherent risks, Regards. Laurie NZ. 😊

Hi, it is The Story of the Solomons by Charles E Fox. Revised Edition 1975 Pacific Publications, PTY LTD Sydney 29 Alberta St Sydney. Around page 21….hope this helps as it is a topic for want of a better word, explored in Star Trek episodes. Ironically I watched a RU-vid video the other day about tearooms in Japan way back in which the customs seen today were developed to accomodate Samurai, as they were trained fighters etc. To me its interesting how humans developed varying social rules (customs) around safety, correct behaviours etc….. not knowing another’s customs and social rules can lead to really bad outcomes, Regards. Laurie NZ. 😊
