3rd disadvantage to rolling - Carry-on bags - It will take longer to re-pack your bag if it gets stopped by airport security for something inside to be examined and possibly tested. If you are in a hurry, that bag won't be packed as neatly as when you left your house/hotel to catch the flight because you will be rushed getting everything back in. Also, I roll my clothes that are in packing cubes. That makes it easier to find the shirt or whatever I want without dismantling a stack.
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn Год назад
True. I tend to be particular about packing everything up, but if security goes through it, so I dread it when security wants to go through it!

I've been saved by packing cubes when my luggage doesn't quite fit in the overhead bin. I just remove one of the packing cubes and put it in the bin separately, Also very helpful when looking for something mid-flight, or in the airport, as you can remove one cube at a time to look. :)

I agree if you’re going to use cubes they need to be compression! On a recent trip I used packing cubes and Marie Kondo’s folding technique and was successfully able to pack and easily see what was in the cubes. I’ve been packing and unpacking to see what I can fit for a month long trip to Europe with carry-on only, so I greatly appreciate your packing videos. Thank you! PS - you’re much younger than my 60 years, so I don’t hear parent when you reference your travel history. 😂😊

Packing cubes and I lay everything flat. I find I'm able to get 10-12 outfits by laying everything as flat as possible to fit the size of the cube (as big as one side of my carry-on luggage). I pack a second cube for dirty clothes and I lay those flat as well, so everything fits when it's time to go home. This method reduces wrinkles. The other half of my bag contains my shoes, steamer, purse, underwear and bathing suits. My personal bag contains toiletries, meds, masks, clorox wipes for plane and hotel, snacks, gum/mints, hand sanitizer and makeup (lip gloss, mascara, brow pencil, cream blush, cream shadow and brush).

I like packing cubes. Even visiting family, there often is zero closet space so we easily use packing cubes for organization. He has his and I have mine. Plus a couple of time our checked luggage arrived busted open. Packing cubes mean that I am less likely to lose items. I do fill spaces between cubes with a few rolled items. I love packing cubes for ease of finding what I want at my destination and keeping everything neat if security needs to search my bag. However, I do like to either roll or fold KonMari style the clothes before they go into the packing cubes, again for ease of finding what I want. I don't use compression packing cubes because they encourage me to take more than I need and are also heavier when compressed so I might be inclined to go over my weight limit. Both. Cubes, rolling, flat folding, whatever works. I also use Eagle Creek "envelopes" which I prefer if II need to keep clothes wrinkle free. Generally, I will use cubes or envelopes at the start, then roll coming home. But in both cases, I also flat fold a lot of my more bulky items. I rarely use stuff sacks for down jackets, but flat fold on top just before closing. I remember a time when TSA picked me for a random check and needed to look into my carry on. His response was he had never seen a more organized and carefully packed bag like mine before.
@NoraDunn

Ha! How are the Eagle Creek envelopes to use? Are they finicky? Does using them take up more space? And do they legitimately keep clothes wrinkle-free?
@dr.d723
@dr.d723 Год назад
@@NoraDunn Thanks for asking. I have several in different sizes and I like them alot. The key is to use the folding mat to carefully fold your clothes and put them in the envelope. And yes, my ironed shirts stay crisp and wrinkle-free if I fold carefully. Like cubes and compression cubes, they have their place among the packing accessories. Because I travel so much, I do focus on careful packing outbound and not as much inbound.

I only recently got a set of packing cubes and, not being an expert in their proper use, I decided to roll my clothes, which I've been doing for years, and put them in rolled form into the cubes. Being rolled I could spot the item I wanted in its cube, but being in a cube everything stayed organized and where it should be. Best of both worlds. Sometimes you don't have to choose, and there's usually no "right" way to do anything, but rather what works for you and feels right. I also stuff random items into little gaps and corners to take full advantage of the space, and into shoes of course (which I put in plastic bags because, well, they have soles, which can't be vouched for). And, while my cubes aren't compression ones, my soft sided luggage has compression zippers that sort of accomplish the same thing, without risking going overweight. My biggest dilemma is what to put in those external pockets. Usually a jacket or laundry, in a bag of course.
@NoraDunn

Ooh! Great idea! I used clear compression bags for a while - the heavy duty kind. They're amazing for saving space, but I think I was a bit overzealous when compressing the air out of those bags - because it left everything irrevocably wrinkled! Also, the particular bags I had were the kind with one-way air vents that would allow you to roll the bag to get the air out, but they didn't actually work very well, and air would slowly seep back into the bags over time. Do yours hold up better?

@curlieeloks3032 Год назад
Forgive me if I’m wrong but I kinda felt the frustration in this question lol . And respectfully not for this specific RU-vidr but most RU-vid videos don’t cater to or target “how to get carry on 7kg or lower” for international travelers. This was a great video tho ! Emirates and Saudi airlines to name a few usually ask for 7kg carry ons
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn Год назад
@Caroline - Jetstar is super stringent with their 7kg restrictions, because that's for BOTH the luggage and personal item. Basically you have to pay for the upgrade to 14kg - just think of it as part of the cost of the airfare. They just separate it out for those few people who are checking a bag and don't need to carry on anything other than a purse.

Roll clothes AND put into packing cubes.

Yes! Although packing cubes tend to compress better when you fold into them, if it's not a compressible packing cube, you can get more in by rolling.

Packing cubes are bulky in my opinion I've tried 3 different suitcases with a large medium underwear one and toiletrie bag

Some packing cubes are indeed bulky. The trick is to find one that's ultralight so the cube itself doesn't take up much space. Also, it needs to be compressible.

@@NoraDunn I had lightweight ones but found they took up more space in a cabin sized suitcase

Also- lay out those jackets flat. They take up almost no room that way, but a bulky thing when stuffed.

I find packing cubes annoying. Most of them are not clear. You are packing twice, once into the cube, then into the case!😏LET's Roll!!

I hate packing cubes. I roll things and fit them into the corners of the suitcase.

Nice! Rolling makes best use of corners and other spaces that packing cubes can't quite fill.

I actually hate packing cubes and compression cubes. They are a total pain, add weight and don't save space. I mean...my suitcase IS one big compression bag. I only carry on (small suitcase and an under seat duffel). Electronics and things I might need during the flight go in the mini-duffel. If stopped by TSA and they opened my suitcase, I would say, "Feast your eyes on my bits and pieces." I don't care what they see and I don't care how they put it back....of course I keep electronics in the duffel and that is the only bag they have ever looked in. I don't sit in my plane seat wondering how my lovely belongings look currently organized in a bag....I don't care. I unpack everywhere and have never stayed somewhere, where I thought it was too dirty to use the drawers. If I did, my stuff would just chill in my bag. OH, and I don' roll....I know, the horror! I put everything as flat as possible and then tuck undies, socks and thin t-shirts or pj items in remaining crannies. This is works for me, I always get more in that when I have tried cubes or even compression bags. To each their own :0) (Note- this is for normal travel, whether a week or a month....stuffing your life in a backpack for a year to cross Europe on foot is a totally different animal).
