Packing my Osprey Kestrel 48 Backpack with Wild Camping Gear

My first wild camping uk trip is planned so I need to pack my Osprey Kestrel 48 backpack bag. I'm taking a variety of wild camping gear with me including my backpacking gear, camping gear and hiking gear.
The Osprey Kestrel 48L is perfect for my one night away as it fits all my backpacking kit in there perfectly. Fully packed my osprey backpack weighs under 9kg excluding food and water.
Although the weather is nice during the day, wild camping in wales is cold at night. This means I've got to take my cold weather camping gear. I'm taking my OEX 4 season sleeping bag and my Mountain Equipment insulated sleeping pad to hopefully keep me warm at night.
Buy the Osprey Kestrel 48 in black here from Amazon UK: amzn.to/3sRvYA3
I'm taking my naturehike cloud up 1 backpacking tent with me. This maximises the space in my osprey rucksack for all my gear.
I fully intend to cook camp stove meals on the mountain so I'm taking my soto camping equipment and my jetboil summit skillet.
I don't want to take too much water so I'm taking my MSR Trail Shot to fill up at the tarn.
The hiking gear I'm taking consists of my Rab Cirrus insulated jacket and my Sprayway Gore-Tex jacket as well as some changes of clothing.
Any questions just ask. If you want to see my first wild camp video then please SUBSCRIBE. If you are into your hiking, backpacking and wild camping then check out my other videos.
Thanks, Andy.
Please note the amazon link is what everyone sees and pays but I receive a miniscule finders fee when people use the link. It all goes back into backpacking gear!

Thanks for a great review! I was wondering what your thoughts and review of the padding on the shoulder straps are. Do you still reckon they will be comfortable if you are carrying around 18kg/a loaded Kestrel 58?
@BackpackingUK
@BackpackingUK 2 года назад
Personally, I would go for the Aether or Atmos if you are carrying 18kg. I think the Kestrel has a comfort limit of 15kg but this is purely from my experience.
@steviesteve750
@steviesteve750 Год назад
I've got a kestrel 38 and a 68. I've carried 15-16kg in it including 3L of water in the hydration sack, barely notice the weight that's how comfortable they are. Also, I put my tent and poles through the two loop straps at the bottom, they've never come loose, and the tent doesn't swing about when walking. Saves a lot of internal space for wine / beer etc. I'm not so bothered by the extra kg or two, but I've not managed to completely fill the 68. I could overnight with the 38, but I'd have to be much more thrifty. Better for summer.

Hey mate, I've just stumbled across your channel (not sure how I've missed it to be fair) and thought this was a cracking tutorial / insight. How do you find the Cloud Up 1? I wanted one for a while, bought one and sent it right back after the first pitch in winds of 10-15 mph because it was an absolute sail and done nothing but caught the wind. Again, a brilliant insight and I'm now a subscriber.

Great Video! I have just bought the Kyte (womens version) 56L. Watching you pack i think it may be a bit large, although having considered that for ML i would have a leaders first aid kit, group shelter, rope etc and i my sleeping mat is a bit larger than yours, I reckon it will be spot on? only issue is it may look too large for day hikes so i may have to get a 36 l one aswell? Cheers
@BackpackingUK
@BackpackingUK 2 года назад
I think a 56L is spot on for what you’re taking. Great choice 👍
3 года назад
I prefer to use the normal Hydraulics bag from Osprey rather than the LT version as the former is more durable. The hydration slot on the Kestrel is more abrasive on hydration bags than other Osprey packs like the Raptor & Kamber that have dedicated hydration compartments. I don't think the couple of grams difference is worth switching to the LT.
@BackpackingUK

Fair enough. At the time, I got the LT in the sale.

Great video. Walking poles highly recommended (multiple uses). 10C's kit missing - combustion, cutting (knife / multitool), compass (navigation), comms (signal mirror & whistle), candlelight (headtorch), cordage, cloth tape (duct tape). Also - repairs, toilet, first aid. If you're water filter failed or lost, what would be your back up? Hence why first 10C is container to boil water in a fire, plus cotton bandanna & milbank bag.

Who uses the compression bag for his sleeping bag to put in the bagpack?? massiv waste of space
@BackpackingUK
@BackpackingUK Год назад
How do you compress the sleeping bag then?
@drug2
@drug2 Год назад
@@BackpackingUK I don't. just stuff it in the pocket. saves you way more space because you can fill up every edge and corner and you don't have any unused space left filled with air
@BackpackingUK
@BackpackingUK Год назад
I can't see how it's possible to make it smaller than using a compression bag but do whatever you're happy doing.
@drug2
@drug2 Год назад
@@BackpackingUK its not about makeing it smaller. its about saving space and weight. you waste a lot of space in you bagpack with those compression bags because you can't fill up the edges and corners of your bagpack. therefore these edges are "filled" with air and you need a bigger bagpack just because of those compression bags. I can fit my gear, in compression bags, in my 48l Osprey Kestrel. Without the bags it all fits in my 38l kestrel ;)
