Ive seen people trying to imitate this. They do a good job, but as a producer I have to recognise the little details that he puts in it. Apart from the unrivalled skill, there is a soul there that is totally unmatched. I suppose that is why he is the greatest of all times. Even in his generous duets with other greats, you can tell that he is holding back and even so, they look like they just wasted their lives.... What a mater this man was.
When I first heard this song 30 years ago, I was absolutely convinced they had sped up the recording to make the performance more impressive. At the time, I didn't realize he had a capo on the first fret, and so the pitch difference from the way I (poorly) played it and the recording was all the proof I needed. A few years later, the thought of him using a cap popped in my head. But I tried playing it that way and the part at 1:58 ended up being so high up the neck that it was all but unplayable at anything but a snail's tempo. So, my conspiracy theory stayed alive for many years. Fast forward to today, when I finally found this video of him playing the song live, and there is no doubt. Man did land on the moon, and Paco was indeed super-human. It's not just the jaw dropping speed, it's the flawlessness, it's the amazing tone, it's his making it look so damn easy. Yes, yes. I've seen Grisha do this, and yes, he plays it almost as fast and almost as flawless. But Grisha sounds mechanical compared to Paco. He lacks the essence of Paco's playing, as he should. No one should or ever will duplicate Paco's playing.
+John Cortell About that last part, why not? it's pretty reasonable to say that no one will, but "No one should"? I would love it if another alien of his kind landed here in my lifetime
Call me nostalgic. There are many musicians who have put their mark in this world. Each has done so by being himself or herself and bringing something new, exciting and unique to the table--not trying to be a mirror image of a master that came before them.
John Cortell Yes and w all due respect to Grisha and his technical abilites...but he doesnt capture any essence or at least it never translates in his playing...he always sound robotic and dry when i see him play...Paco is a one of a kind...Paco Cepero...Antonio Rey....Tomatito....Nino Josele are also way above Grisha and countless other players...
For what it's worth, even if your "sped up recording" conspiracy theory was true, a one semitone increase in pitch would only result in 5% faster playback. That's not much of a difference in tempo, the original recording would still have to be impressive in its own right.
Paco is by far the greatest ever but I see and hear a lot of similarities in Antonio Rey who I consider to be the best currently, of course he was inspired by Paco as a lot of guitarist are but Antonio’s level of playing and feeling reminds me the most of Paco.
am not from Spain and since my childhood and my sense of the guitar I fell in love with Spain and my love for it increases as I grow up knowing that I did not see it, unfortunately... I love Paco de Lucia and its fine art🌍
IF god exists, and I am a firm man who thinks he doesn't.... But then I watch this man. There is no equal. There is no comparison. There is no-one like him. He is divine in his skills and through true passion he projects pure pleasure to us. Rest in peace, Paco.
Guajiras de Lucía, composed by Paco of course, may he rest in peace, is one of the most creative and vivid of all his performances. High precision and variants makes this masterpiece a treasure to enjoy forever
Jefferson Barbosa sorry, but Yamandú Costa is way too young still to be compared to Paco, he is awesome and has an excellent technique and compose, but Paco is a beast and has 10 times more technique than yamandú, not to mention paco composed things out of his own period, like all the genius musicians done across the history.
Michael Halas I am sorry, but I don't think I can compare to him, not even close. I watch this video and others from the same program and just can't believe how great he was in every respect. This even beats his Teatro Real concert.
i dont think people who havent learned this piece themself know how fast he is playing his impeccable technique makes it seem the pace is steady and calm because he plays each note metronome and technically perfect, but this pace is truly exhausting, it's insane.
Looking at him, by any rational standard, should make me want to just quit. But for some reason it's the opposite effect, where he always makes me want to play instead. It's like he has extra life force, and he shares it. Long live the king.
I would have Loved to have had the honour of seeing this man play live I always loved this song, and after many years on and off practice I learned to pkay it quite well...... But I'll never be able to play it quite like this. Amazing skill. R.I.P ❤
I've been practicing this piece for months now but I can't recreate his sound even when I play 3x slower. What a legend, what a god...
Keep going as long as it takes. My teacher played it every night at Plaza Flamingo Toronto and he struggled too until mastery. Obviously he learned it 20 yrs or so before that. And the higher the skill the faster the uptake of songs.
@@cristianjimenez1000 thanks, im still going :D making small improvements every month, but the longer i train, the more little details i start to notice. It's those little details that seperate casual flamenco players from legends like Paco, learning his pieces made me appreciate him even more.
Guajiras de Lucia! or as I call it "The Spanish Guitar P.H.D. Flash Course"... All my life since I was a teenager I heard Paco play this masterpiece over and over, playing on my cassete tape, never undestanding how this human being could do that. This is the first time I see him actually performing it. What a pleassure! I did get to see hime live but he rarely played his "Guajiras de Lucia". Bravo Maestro!
No practico ejercicios. Ivo Pogorelich
No he just was talented and played thousands of hours plus experimented until he transformed flamenco itself. It's not superhuman, just a very rare event in human history.
Thank you for this video! Paco ,with his amazing technique and performance skills, has always been number one on my list of favorite guitarists. Rest in peace, maestro!
The only sad thing when you listen PL playing is that you are sure that no one can even do half that he did. He simply has no substitute on sight. I see good artists trying to play his pieces, but the gap between them and the master is as large as the galaxy… What a loss for mankind...
I laugh in joy every time I watch this video because he is so insanely great. Those runs are precise, clean, and blindingly fast. So glad I got to see him perform live.
uitstekende prestaties en voor 1974 een heel goede opname, dank je wel om te delen!!! excellent performance and for '74 a very good recording, thank you for sharing!!!
About Paco and Grysha. Grysha is technically good. However, the big difference is that Grysha is Russian and Paco is Spanish (and Andalucian!). His father (and teacher) was a flamenco guitarrista. His brothers are also flamenco artists (singer and guitar player). Flamenco runs in his blood. On top of that, he probably was a kind of genious and certainly a hard worker (he used to play the guitar 12 hours a day when he was a 10-12 year old little boy!). Paco played the flamenco guitar like he breahed. Music just flows and his hands seem to move without any effort producing such precise and expressive melodies and rythm that it's simply incredible. His technique is beyond the reach of normal human beings! And emotion is always there. With age Paco became less proficient technically speaking, but this is normal. Good luck, Grysha. Maybe you should go to Algeciras and spend the rest of your life there. :-)
the joke is that little Paco wanted to be a singer. His father told him, that there is no money for visiting school and forced him instead to exercise guitar for long hours daily. That was the basis for his incredible technique (same happened to young Paganini).
