Horseshoe Bend
Length: 16 miles
Route Type: Point to Point
This activity brought paddle boarding and camping to a whole new level for me! I just got my own paddle board for over a month and I had this crazy idea to try paddling the Horseshoe Bend and camp for the night. It was really an amazing experience!
I used the Kayak the Colorado company for backhaul service. They pick you up at Lees Ferry and drop you off at the bottom of the Glen Canyon Dam. They also have kayak for rent if you do not have one yet. It is a 16 mile paddling back to Lees Ferry. From Glen Canyon Dam, you can paddle a little bit and you'll start finding some camping spot. I chose to camp at mile 9, exactly in front of the Horseshoe Bend Overlook. From the bottom, you could still see or hear people from the top. The stars were out and in full display for the whole night with some wind that made it cooler. It is still hot in the middle of August but the water is freezing cold all year round. I woke up early the next day but the wind was still strong so we waited a little bit before we paddle back to Lees Ferry. On the way back, we were lucky to see wild horses by the river!
