Ranveer Singh won several best actor awards for his role in the movie. Sometime near the end of that year, him and Deepika got married. During an awards show he said, "I might not have found the queen in the film, but I definitely found my queen in real life."

In real history, the battle wasn't this easy. I do understand that Sanjay Leela Bhansali did this for dramatization purposes. But in real history, there was only ONE siege of Chittorgarh, which lasted for 8 long months, when Allauddin besieged Chittorgarh from all sides, and repeatedly used massive trebuchets to pummel the walls of Chittorgarh fort with massive boulders, finally gaining entry around August 1303. The women in the fort ended up committing Jauhar, and the soldiers were eliminated in battle. However, here was the major plot twist. Allauddin Khilji was livid towards Chittorgarh, and was raring to raze it to the ground. However, the Mongols, seeing that Delhi was undefended, decided to attack Delhi for their 4th attempt. They had already breached into the Punjab Region, and were advancing towards Delhi. Allauddin appointed his son Khizr Khan as the governor, kept his general Malik Shahin as the regent, and had to hurriedly pack up and run back towards Delhi. However, he did give orders to decimate and plunder Chittorgarh as a vengeance, which would be carried out by his governors. Allauddin rushed to Delhi, where the Mongols attacked and besieged him for two full months at the fort of Siri. He had to recall his general Malik Chajju (who was leading the charge towards the Kakatiya Dynasty of Warangal (Present Day Telangana)) to break the deadlock, which he finally did. After he dealt with the Mongols, he went back to Chittorgarh, to recapture it after Malik Shahin abandoned his post due to pressure from the Gujarati Monarchs. This time, Allauddin gave the throne of Chittorgarh to the local Chahamana chief Maladeva, under an indirect alliance system, to prevent the region from rising up again, which works well till the Khilji Dynasty remains in power. After the Khilji Dynasty collapsed, the region declared independence and re-declared hostilities with the following dynasties. Coming to the conflict itself, both Islamic and Rajput historians agree unanimously that the Causus Belli for the invasion of Chittorgarh was not Rani Padmavati in particular, but rather the fact that Chittorgarh was providing shelter to the rebel fighters of Ranthambhore (which Allauddin had conquered in the year before the previous), and Allauddin demanded that Chittorgarh submit to his protection and surrender the rebel fighters to him. Rani Padmavati would obviously have been a secondary concern, and Allauddin would have captured her if he could, he was a savage military conqueror, who takes away or levels down the territories he conquers, just to strike terror. But he didn't launch the invasion of Chittorgarh purely for Rani Padmavati. Again, this movie was inspired from an epic poem, so it was shown this way, but the real history had much more intrigue than the movie in itself. This episode of history can be stretched out into a multiple season web-series.

The queens used to perform jauhar even after knowing it's the most painful way to die because the invaders used to be involved in necrophilia and so to protect their dignity even after being dead they used to jump in fire and am so proud of them❤❤

I would not blame you guys for mistaking the first wife of the king to be his mother because the subtitles did not translate how both the queens addressed each other and their husband, the king - the first wife addressed Rani Padmavati as "Chhoti Rani" i.e. younger queen and she in turn addressed the first wife as "Badi Rani" i.e. elder queen. Also, throughout the movie they both addressed the king in words that would have suggested that he is the husband to both but the subtitles translated all of them as just "the king". So, I hope that by now you know that the character who you thought was queen mother was actually the king's first wife. And about the movie, everyone here has said enough, so I will just conclude by saying that Padmavat is one of the most grand films in India 🙏

Many people associate Jauhar (self immolation) with Sati (burning of wife after her husband death). Jauhar was performed by them as a choice that they'd rather die than being dishonored and enslaved (rape, marriage to the enemy etc) by the khilji bcz it is no hidden fact how women were treated under their reign that they'd rather choose death over submitting to them. Edit : madri did not perform sati. Sati was a practice to end the marital relationship in one birth and carried a belief that in afterlife they'll be born as the wife of the very same husband. What madri did had no intention of attaining afterlife, it was purely out of guilt and regret cuz she held herself somewhere responsible for death of her husband. She didn't burn herself...stop spreading Wikipedia info dude it's stupid in today's time.

The last 15 mins of climax scene is real goosebumps every time i watch this movie, with just background music and no dialogue, the last scene itself depicts the emotions behind the honor of being a rajput, you can understand only if you have lived with it or if you have ever studied this indian historical culture, the practice of Jauhar although has socially and legally ended but even today, the rajputs remember this brave act of queen padmavati

That's where subtitles can go so wrong, In Hindi dialect everything was obvious & can be easily understood but English subtitles messed it up for both Andrew & Steph. As for both the Queens, the subtitle read just Queen. Feel really bad for both that they thought the first Queen was actually Maharawal Ratan Singh's mother!

Since you guys had only praises for the music just like the rest of us here, I would like to mention that the movie director was the music director too - Sanjay Leela Bhansali! And before he started composing the music himself, he used to carefully select the music composers for his movies and worked with them. That's why, unlike many songs, most of his movies' songs are remembered with its video.

We had been to Chittorgarh few years back (much before movie came out). We took a guide who told us the story and also showed us the sites… it was so heartbreaking and at the same time fascinating for me. I didn’t know till then that something like Jauhar existed.. anyone who goes to Rajasthan should visit Chittorgarh .. it’s in ruins but is filled with history

As a grown ass man I burst in tears when i saw the jauhar seen I’m extremely proud Indian to see this where women can die instead of loosing self respect. That was not his mother, she was her first wife. She sent the king to get her some precious pearls that could only be found in Singhal (the place where Deepika lived) and that's where he met Deepika.

The work done is absolutely Epic but yes..they take a lot of free hand to the original story!! That's why there was a lot of chaos on realising this movie in India! Rani Padmini i.e. Padmavati has a lot of respect in India!! And " Gora Badal " story alone can make a great Epic movie..and my opinion it should be!!

It's not imaginary story it's based on a true incident...a historical movie.

I think Ranveer and Deepika met and their love story began during the shooting of Ram Leela.Its actually the second epic love story what began on sets of Sanjay Leela Bansali film.The earlier one was of Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan(this one didnt end up well though,but still remembered and duscussed in India!)-Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam! Thats the power of true art I guess ❤❤

Many such incidents happened all over India in history. It might be just a poem but many similar true events also happened to save glory of women. This is India which believes in dying with honour than being a slave to enemy.

This was the dark time that shaped societies in northwest region of India. Remnants of that can still be seen. Ghunghat became compulsory because all that women was reduced to a thing to be conquered. Weddings are still held in night time. And much more... Thanks to these warriors of Dharma, India stands and lives.

This is a true story from 1303, where Rani Padmavati did Johar(self immolation). It has also been mentioned in malik mohammad jayasi’s book in detail.

I visited the Chittorgarh fort a few years back and saw the sites where pivotal moments of this movie took place many centuries ago (for example the place where reflection of queen Padmavati was shown to Khilji). Although the movie is said to be based on a poem, the folklores suggest that this actually happened in history. The area where the queen performed jauhar with womenfolk of the palace is not accessible now. But, i could feel some eerie energy from beyond the locked doors.

Actually Rani sa real name was *Rani Padmini* and not Padmavati. Thats the reason why this movie was not released in Rajasthan. In 2022 I had a blessing to visit her temple in Chittor. I was happy and sad at the same time. Happy becoz i was in the temple. Sad becoz the temple wasn't glorious enough.

Just a feedback, when you are watching some time pieces like this one, it would be great if you could ask some of your indian friends for a little background without spoilers ofcourse . For eg. The relation between the characters, the queen you referred to as mother queen was actually his wife, as was padmavati, the ideology of different cultures and kingdoms like for eg. Rajputs are known for their Bravery pride and valour, their honesty integrity and values as you see the king displaying. It's not just a poem, it's a true story. It'll just help you get the whole gist of the movie and enjoy it. Just want to say that India has a history of great men and women 🇮🇳

After this… if u visit india and in rajasthan in chittorgadh if u visit the fort and the place where actual jauhar took place.. u r gonna get goosebumps.. there r so many real stories of kings and forts here..u must visit india and look at this forts in real.

Every actor also wants to act once in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali (director of this film) film because of his aesthetic working style and craft in filmmaking wherein every aspect of screenplay is done with conviction towards performance, even in those all costumes, action and grandeur; the director's most of the prime focus remains on the performances (because that's one of the main factor which symbolises period and epicness) of the actors which reflects on the screen and his focus on the minute details either it might be the body language and expressions of actors, to costumes, production design and art direction. One more thing which I like about Sanjay sir's film is the dialogues in the film, which are mostly unique, poetic and metaphoric, which audiences forget to mention and appreciate about.

Sinhala Kingdom was the ancient name of Sri Lanka. Princess Padmawati was from there. Queen Padmawati was the second wife. In the beginning of the movie, it was 1st queen's parents who gifted unique Sinhalese (Sri Lankan) pearls to the King. It is not a movie just based on poem, it is from Indian history (13th-14th century). Due to many religious and cultural issues, the director choose to stick with the poem version.

Whole story is real, I live in chittorgarh where this was happened, Maa padmini is our mother, she is an epitome of courage, sacrifice & righteous🙏

If you read Akbarnama, his biography..Akbar 'the great', used to measure his success by the weight of Janeyu's (holy thread) collected from hose who were killed. From his Chittor conquest, he mentions he collected 3000 Kg of thread. One could only imagine the equivalent number of people that it translates to. And yet our historians consider him the most 'Secular and liberal' of the Mughals 🙃

The ariel shot of the Scenne with woman walking towards the fire, and the background score that played, will be one of the best shots in cinema history. That scene till date will give emotional eyes. Loved the reaction by you too. Hopefully you can watch other historic films like, Poniyan Selvan, Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy. You Sure would love them for the Drama that's been extracted. As a hindu rajput the jauhar scene always gets me emotional. Some people try to criticize even that as hatred saying the Hindus were bigoted theyd rather be burned alive than be conquered by muslims but given what islamic conquerers did and are still in modern times known to do to captives of war if it comes to this today, I'd do this too like my ancestors. Your dignity is more important. What the left doesn't want to talk about is genocides and cruelties comitted by Islamic invaders but want to lecture hindus on even attempting to save the last ounce of their dignity or their dharma. We're literally the last surviving ancient civilization and they cant stand it the rest was all destroyed by the European Christians and arab muslims

I've actually been to the place in Rajasthan where he saw padmavaat for the first time. It was a dome with a mirror on the front/top and behind there was a lake which had steps on the other end where she was standing. The place where this jauhar was performed is now converted into a garden

SLB is the king of subtlety and slow burns, no unnecessary dialogues, very to the point and hitting, let the eyes and classical indian music do the talking!Imo Ranveer Singh's best performance till date! The historical accuracy in terms of costumes, music is sincere. Some fun facts: Deepika's outfit in the Ghoomar song was 40+ kgs! Also after this movie, she hiked up her fee and reportedly got paid more than her male co-stars in the film! The actors who played Queen Padmini ie Deepika and Khilji aka Ranveer are married in real life! Also one is almost shocked to believe that he is the same person who played Kabir in Dil Dhadakne Do and Bajirao in Bajirao Mastani!!! The power the man holds!! Overall the movie is a masterpiece, simple plot, all exaggerated to perfect balance with SLB's stunning cinematics!!!

It's not just poem based it's the history. It actually happened which is devastating.

Jauhar happened in real life. Its a true story. Poem was written on the true incident. But in true story before the conquest by khilji, two rajput ruler fought and died. After that to save themselves from Khilji Conquest and to defeat him morally, performed jahar. The spot they performed jauhar is now a famous tourist spot in india. Sati pratha, a cruel thing that was later abolished by raja ram mohan roy started because of such islamic conquest in India. They would rape and dishonor women and enslave them. Later it became kind of patriarchal thing. Which needed to be abolished.

Haha, Ranveer and Deepika met 6 years before this movie, on the sets of another Bhansali film- Ramleela. Ranveer fell for soon after and I remember seeing him at a chat show with Karan Johar, how sensitive he used to get whenever her name was mentioned. I knew then and there that he'll marry her. Its more than 10 years now and they are still together, still crazy about each other. He continues to say how lucky he is to have her... They are such a power couple. Like Nick and Priyanka.

It's not merely a poem . It's a true event in history. Alauddin Khilji was a real evil tyrant. The king of Chittor and Rani Padmini are also historical figures. You can still visit various forts of Rajasthan including the Chittorgarh Fort where Jauhar (self immolation) was done by brave Hindu women. And Hindu men and their whole armies would cover their bodies with the ashes of their wives and then go to the battlefield. This poignant event came to be known as Jauhar Saka. You can still visit these historical forts and the "jauhar kunds" where these events took place 500-800 years ago in several cities of state of Rajasthan. The reason why anybody would do it? It is simply because these mughal armies didn't even leave dead bodies of women alone , there were horrific events of what they did even with dead bodies. So Hindu women preferred self immolation to preserve their honor. It's a poignant tale in the history of Hindus of this land and a very brave one too

Without a doubt my favorite Bollywood movie❤, it was first movie i watched in 3D, and i found its 3D effect better than most todays movies. I watched it with my family and it was first movie my grandmother watched in theater, I still remember her reaction watching Ostrich coming out of the screen 😂 in the starting of movie, and her emotions & indulgence at climax of movie. Now, she is no more 😔 and this movie will always be close to my heart.

Khilji actually became the emperor of India and stabilised the Khilji Dynasty that ruled for three decades.

This isn't based only on a poem. Its real history. You can search "Johar kund" to see the actual place where Rani Padmini commited johar. The place even has hand sculptures of the women.

If both of you dont know, Alaudin's actor (Ranveer Singh) and Padmavati's actor (Deepika Padukon) are married couples, the movie came out before they were married.

Ranveer is absolutely amazing in this movie. Jaby and Syntell had reviewed it before, but I would enjoy watching both of you to react to it as well, after having seen Padmavat and Ram Leela.

I can't believe they really thought she was the mother in law. Of course she would be mad about someone stealing the attention of her husband.

It was the bravery of Indian people, mainly Hindus and Sikhs, against repeated invasions that occurred in northwest India.

I loved the chorography for Alauddin vs Ratan Singh (the king). That's how you do a sword and shield battle not the superhero bs in south. Proper stances, guards and swings. And the depiction of injuries. Alauddin's reaction to the cuts is very realistic, will power ain't gonna help you move when you are bleeding balls.

This isnt just “based” on a poem. This is based on a true story. These characters are real. The bare bones of the story are true.

That place is still haunted,people still hear women screaming and still can smell ashes or something burning especially in evening or night time when people go by that place

If you ever visit chittorgarh fort.... In those times there were almost 80 water ponds and there were agricultural fields within the fort itself so that if any enemy attacks the whole population can be accommodated within the fort itself to safeguard the women and the children specially because in those days of Delhi kings attacked someone they used to capture the women and kill or forced the male population to adopt their respective religions so the chittorgarh fort is a great example of how a perfect fort should be built . And that's why we Rajasthani people believe that ' gadhon me gadh chittorgarh' meaning a perfect fort.

So just a quick context about Jauhar that Padmavati mentioned earlier: It means self immolation, in other words, self suicide by jumping to your death on a funeral pyre. It’s almost similar to Sati - which is the act of drugging a woman and burn her alive with her husband’s dead body during cremation, as part of Hindu tradition of funeral during those time periods (luckily they don’t do that anymore 😌) Also if you notice all the women of Chittor wearing red and bridal dresses, signifying that they once came as a bride, they will die with honours as brides. As Padmavati mentioned that even the womenfolk are more powerful warriors than the men (based on the statement metaphor: even the bangles have more power and sound than the swords), the women choosing self immolation and death is an example of their bravery and also the true valour of being the ultimate female warriors. They chose to be with their husbands in the after life (since they took the sacred vows), they would rather choose death, instead of misery in enslavement and dishonour (being raped, mistreated cruelly) under the hands of the barbaric tyrants aka the Khiljis. This is primary example of women being the true Rajputi warriors! Do watch the climax and end of the movie, it will definitely give you goosebumps though, but for me, this is one proud and emotional scene about the bravery of how it feels like to be a true Rajputi woman 🫡💖 That’s how Rani Padmavati and the women are remembered in history like that 🫡
