Just had my Dumble-clone head converted to a combo and asked it to be tolex'ed in snakeskin like your amps! Ha! You guys are great. Thanks and have a great 2022.
An original Les Paul burst and a yoga ball, something no other RU-vid channel can offer - this is why we watch The Guitar Show! Happy 2022 guys and look forward to all the great content!
Happy new year to you both, nice to see Darren getting some love Awesome guitar builder and I’m lucky enough to own one of his Bursts!! The necks on all his guitars are so comfortable and the build quality is second to none 👍🏼
Always loved that 54 Bob, what a guitar, you do need a 55 custom now just so I can drool over it, great show as usual, I think 52s have a slighrly thinner maple cap which probably changes the tone a bit imo.
Be interesting to compare that ‘54 with a ‘56 P90 equipped custom to see how much the bridge influences the sound. There are also the mini Humbucker Deluxe and the three Humbucker Custom Les Pauls.
That Albatross tribute, so sweet! Keep these coming, Bob and Ramon! Makes me wish I had a knowledgeable pal to sit and jam with lol. Just realized that sounded a bit sad😬😂
Until a few days ago, I was a believer in the PAF voodoo myth. I just got a '57 Les Paul Custom from the Gibson Custom Shop. Don't get me wrong. Their replicated PAFs sound is awesome indeed. However, after doing my own back-to-back shootout with a recent 3 humbucker pickup Fender Tele Deluxe, I was surprised to discover that the Fender pickups sound overwhelmingly better than the PAFs. I mean the PAFs were totally blown out of the water. And it wasn't just me. All five other people in the room had the same opinion. The PAFs were put to shame further when compared to the TV Jones T-Armond pickups on my Gretsch Custom Shop '57 Penguin. So, I now believe that regardless of how sweet the sound of a PAF humbucker, it is by no means the Holy Grail.
Agree with you both - depends on the sound you are looking for. If you want the london blues tone then PAFs are obviously the first choice - but for all other styles of music they are not the best choice.
@@TheGuitarShow that's certainly a common application and they work well for that. But a good PAF is a surprisingly versatile pickup. Especially when paired to a semi hollow body like in the Gibson ES series. Saying they are not good for anything but Blues, in my humble opinion and experience, means coming from a very limited point of view.
Cheers for the video mate! Love listening to you... Ive a Dšgas Les Paul soilid in deep cherry mahogany and ebony fret b, it's a 1978 with Dimarzio pickups front and rear. It was my first axe. I was 14 and only prob was it weight as much as me bro. In 83 I got my Fender Stat and PV Heritage and that's how my party started in Toronto Canada! Again cheers 😎👌
Richard Thompson got a really great tone out of his P90-equipped Goldtop during his early Fairport days. Grateful thanks, once again, including the ass cheeks advice, for a fine video!
Thin Lizzy used Les Paul Deluxes , Standards and Customs in various combinations during different eras. I believe that Brian Robertson may also have used a P90 loaded Les Paul occasionally . Robbo also played a Strat to record the solo on 'Don't Believe a Word' and 'Nightlife'.
Awesome! Ok so that middle position with bridge rolled back tone at 10:35, THAT is what I hear in my head when I think of classic Gibson. Does it work the same way on the P90 Les Paul to achieve a similar honky/nasally tone?
1963 ES 330 TDC … 1968.. i traded my new Schwinn bicycle that I just got for my 16th birthday for the 330. My mom was a waitress and paid $49.95 for that bicycle. I wanted a car, but I got a bicycle instead.I traded the bike to a classmate who had the 330 given to him for his birthday a couple years earlier. He lost interest in the guitar after the 1st lesson.. my mom was so mad at me, she wanted me to give the guitar back and get the bicycle back… i’m glad I didn’t. I still have that 1963 Gibson ES 330 TDC, in the original case here in 2022. Those nickel P 90s are tarnished. This was my main guitar in high school, and when I played in the smoky bars during the 70s and 80s. I have many guitars now ..there is something special about the neck on that 330. Magic happens when I pick that guitar up. I have never had it set up ever.. I have a 335, I like the 330 much better. It’s much easier to play, and I love the P 90s.. I recently traded my 2009 gibson les paul standard gold top HH for a Gibson Les Paul classic Ebony with P 90s. I’m glad I did that swap too..
PAFs. Or P90's? Since Bob has both, originals, I'll take his word. Fantastic Green & Kirwan duet, only down side is not enough playing. And Bob has a couple Minders too, to keep those million Pound Beauties.
If your honest and love tone you have to have 5 different guitars. I dont even have to list them we all know. You guys love tone too...good job guys love the show!!!
Would love to hear a comparison of different 50's p90 style pickups. Like a Gibson R4 vs a Guild with some 50's franz or vs the early DeArmond dynasonics that were in others such as pre Gibsson Epi's and Gretsches
Hi fellas, really enjoyed this, ma type of music and info🥃 imagine asking Bob which one is his favourite baby. That's evil 😂😂😂Respect and stay healthy all.
Imagine playing your '58 burst on a yoga ball......! It's P90's for me though, excellent point about them needing a cranked amp. Too often the amp is left out of the equation I believe.
@@TheGuitarShow ah ok,fell in,yee that's the 1 ,RnR circus is the only time I seen him with it come to think of it, Mick Taylor too liked a a Gibson LP, and 1 of the best to play it probably, unique style,,he probably turned me onto LP,I couldn't afford a Gibson so I only got a used epi LP custom ha ha, 👍✌️
Is it just me, or do the PAFs actually sound more bright than the P90s? Those P90s are really smooth, whereas the PAFs in that ‘58 have a tinny sort of sharpness I find undesirable, although the tone is not entirely off-putting. You’d just think the single-coil would be brighter and sharper.
Yep my experience also. I have original PAFs and p90s. PAFs are brighter and slightly less compressed. The p90s clean up better though, to a crystal clear single coil tone
The Humbucker guitar has a sweeter tone here in my opinion and I really like P90s. Ever since I started chasing PAF clone type pickups and settled on the Toneriders,..My P90 Lester has been collecting a bit of dust.
Simple '58 'Burst is perfect for Classic Rock and Blues etc., but the '54 is a straight-up Blues Machine, which by the way I'm pretty sure Muddy Waters used...either that or it was a '56, but either way it was a P90 Lester he played for a long time before he ever picked up a Fender ANYTHING...
Sometimes PAF’s can be bright almost Tele bright. I find P 90’s to be deeper sounding, narrower maybe but clear and love clean or dirty tones without being nasally. PAF type pickups can be nasally unless fully dirty but again the amp matters. Allen Collins from Skynyrd replaced the bridge humbucker, narrow and bright, in his Firebirds with a P 90. At times his tone was fatter than Rossington’s Les Paul with PAF’s. Both pickups are great! Depends on what YOU need as a player! Myth means nothing. All about sound that works for you.
get yourself a proper 80s tim shaw set and a lightweight paula and you got everything youll ever need, interesting video tho...fooling around with houses on you laps :D
Could you swap the amps? Would be nice to hear same guitar same amp combination. Superb talk about amazing guitars but into different amps. I don't get it
@@TheGuitarShow ...I so regret not at least trying to get one before the values shot up ...I think the closest I got was a short run 71 reissue (no volute) which was about £2k back in the early 2000s?
