From now on I will treat 🕎 to be a day of remembrance according to “2 Maccabees 10:8 They also decreed by public edict, ratified by vote, that the whole Jewish nation should celebrate those same days every year” just as Purim: “At Ester’s order these matters of Purim were confirmed and put in writing in the book.” ‭‭Ester (Est)‬ ‭9:32‬ ‭CJB‬‬ Neither are ‘Feasts of the LORD’ but days we should remember and tell our children

I read 1 and 2 Maccabees, and a lot of other works about this topic. Nothing was said about the lighting of the menorah separate from normal worship. But Hannukah was based to rededicate the temple back to YeHoVah, because the Greeks defiled the temple, the land, and the people of YeHoVah. The Maccabees were a family that stood up to the Greeks, and said they bc will not defile the temple, and their priestly father Mattathias had choose to say no to defiling the temple more. Killed the Syrian officer who was making them do this, and the other Jew who was going to do it in his place, while also destroying their pagan alter in the temple. Then took his 5 sons and fed to the hills. Together, the Maccabees with the Hasidim took back what was taken from them. After 2 yrs later of fighting on Kiclev 25, 148 BCE; they won the revolt, and cleaned the temple of all defilement that Antiochus Epiphanes created 2 yrs earlier of fighting. By dedicating the temple to his pagan god Zeus Olympius on Kiclev 25, 145 BCE and committed the 1st abomination of desolation. So, after they got the temple, land, and people back from the Greeks and Jews that assimilated; they cleansed, and remade all temple equipment. Since, during the war they could not worship the festival of booths, Sukkot; because the were wandering in the mountains and caves like wild animals. They celebrated Sukkot, an 8 day celebration with the lulav and etrog remembering how YeHoVah took them out of the wilderness again, and reversed the defilement on the same day it was created. Therefore, they celebrate Hanukkah on Kiclev 25th, as an 8 day celebration; just like Sukkot, to be in thankfulness of YeHoVah saving them from the abomination of desolation. May his praises be made to YeHoVah our Elohiym (God) and our King and cohen gadol (high priest) Yeshua HaMachiac (Messiah)! Amen!🙏🙏

Some of the later Maccabees might have been inclined towards the Sadducee theology as you mention but Mattathias, Judas, and Jonathan believed in reward therefore they must have believed more in the theology of the Essenes, because Josephus describes how Mattathias told his sons to have faith in the reward for bravery in defending the Israelite nation from destruction therefore they believed in resurrection of the dead and redemption whereas the Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection.

Thank you very much. It's shockingly interesting how pervasive are the paganish traditions. Maybe it's more shocking that I would be shocked by this idea, since after all, most of the world is pagan. I'm not sure what to do in regards to taking precautions as I strive to live a set apart life unto YHVW. Maybe I'm shocked because what seems like worship purely and solely for YHVW, is, sadly, not as it seems. 😞

I agree with you. It seems there are so many who truely in their heart have a call and a deep desire to worship our Savior correctly - a hunger and a thrist to honor Him. Some have carried this hunger for our Messiah to far, and they have begun to follow "men's traditions" in their zeal. They look to unsaved Rabbis and Talmudic sources, and then mix these things with the truth. It's so sad and misleading - hurtful first to our Savior and then to those of us who want the truth - not distorted versions of it. We must know The Word and weigh what we are told by it. Another example of this type of error being taught is that there are 2 new years. There are not - only 1 new year in The Word - it is the first day of Nissan. The 2nd new year came about while the Hebrews were in exile in Babylon. This was never ordained by Yehovah. It's another man made tradition. Many of our Messianic leaders and teachers that pulled out of the protestant churches to follow the truth of the scriptures, in their misguided zeal, have begun to fall prey to many of these made up talmudic traditions. Test everything. Be wise. Know the background of all that you listen to. There are many teachers and scholars that have learned knowledge but, if it isn't based on the foundation of Messiah/Christ as the Word/God made flesh to dwell among us to redeem us then they are not representing the entire truth. We must glean and shift the teachings with open ears of understanding.

It’s one of the few that doesn’t appear in the Jewish biblical canon, is light on liturgy, and unlike on more serious holidays like Rosh Hashanah and Passover, Jews are permitted to work. Because of its relatively flimsy textual base, Hanukkah has been tweaked and twisted over the years to meet contemporary needs. The older part of the story can be found in the Book of Maccabees, which tells of the revolt, and eventual triumph, of Jews over Syrian Greeks during the second century C.E. Not until centuries later did Talmudic rabbis, in an attempt to inject some more divine intervention into what was an otherwise largely nationalistic tale, integrate the miracle element into the holiday. Before that, the story about one small jar of oil lasting for eight nights was likely an oral legend.

Awesome discussion! An 8-light menorah is certainly not Biblical. The notion of a civil and religious calendar is not Biblical. The Biblical calendar begins with Aviv in the Spring, while the “turn of the year” (actually, the mid-point of the year) is not the “head of the year” known as Rosh ha Shanah (non-Biblical). The only actual Holy-day at that time is Yom Teruah (Leviticus 23). Many of these changes in the faith (known as The Way of YHVH) came from the rabbis during and after Babylonian captivity - paganism is riddled throughout Judaism (a word not mentioned in the Tanakh). Judaism is a man-made religion the same as Christianity (based on Romanism). Both have violated Deuteronomy 4:2 and 12:32, the former by adding to the commandments, the latter by taking them away altogether. There is One Way, The Way of YHVH - Grace Faith Obedience. The notion that the faithful, obedient followers of YHVH need to have a “holiday” when the pagans are celebrating is ridiculous. We keep His Holy-days, they can do whatever they want, whenever they want.

Scott, thank you for putting the Gospel in simple terms. I no longer 'celebrate' ANY day/s as they are all fake (idols) made by satan to appease and appeal to the pride of people wanting to be like those nations surrounding them. Christmas is NOT about Christ, and neither is Easter! Much less, Thanksgiving, Halloween, on and on. ALL are pagan! People are being deceived ... and lately as you say by the thinking that we must GO BACK(wards) under the LAW (to what is perceived as purity of the Jews) rather than live under Grace of the New Testament. Else why did Jesus come and die!!?? What we need to do to live and worship SEPARATED unto Jesus/God is LISTEN to the indwelling of the HOLY SPIRIT. Jesus was very clear that that is who He would send to help us!!! Listening or following ANY OTHER direction from ANYBODY is deception. Remember this IS satan's world until such time as Jesus returns and sets up His Kingdom. Just another case in point --- WHY does God say "and the evening and morning were the first day". So WHY don't WE follow that? The reason is is because satan has corrupted EVERYTHING on earth by sin. So you just know that everything we have learned and been taught (through tradition, science, even denominations) has been a lie (or mixed with lies) based on what satan has turned upside down to get you mired in PRACTICING a form of Godliness but having NO Power! Dead! ALL 'religions' are pagan! GOD did not create them. P.S. In Texas also! Looking for other 'woke' believers!!

@@skyqueenworthey1343 Torah (The Law) is not going backwards, it is returning to The Way Yeshua (Jesus) taught and lived. The disciples as well as Saul (Paul) also lived by Torah, which means Instruction. The difference with what the Pharisees taught (andJudaism still teaches) is they have added hundreds and thousands of rabbinic “laws” (traditions) that are burdensome and difficult. Mark 7:8-9 God tells us keeping His commandments are neither. 1 John 5:3, Matthew 11:30, and Deuteronomy 30:11-16. You are correct in agreement that Christmas and Easter are not Biblical, but mixed with paganism, which is forbidden by God. Torah tells us what God’s Holy-days are and how to keep them. John 14:6 - Yeshua is the Way, Truth, Life Psalm 119:1 Torah is the Way Psalm 119:142 Torah is Truth Proverbs 13:14 Torah is Life Psalm 19:7 Torah is perfect Hebrews 4:15 Yeshua is perfect (w/out sin) Proverbs 4:2 Torah is sound teaching Matthew 1:21 (Yeshua is Hebrew for salvation) John 14:5 If you love Yeshua, you will keep His commandments. 1 John 2:3 keep His commandments 1 John 2:6 walk as He walked 1 John 3:4 sin is Torahlessness 1 John 3:7 Practice righteousness to be righteous 1 John 3:23-24 Believe in Yeshua, keep His commandments Deuteronomy 30:11 keeping His commandments are not difficult 1 John 5:3 Keep His commandments, which are not burdensome 2 John 1:6 walk according to His commandments John 10:37-38 “If I do not do the works (commandments) of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.” The covenant with YHVH is the same, just as He is always the same, while we are the ones who have changed. If anything, the standard by the “new covenant” has been raised. It is no longer written on stone, but in our hearts. Jeremiah 31:31-34 The “new covenant” is no more “new” than the “new moon” is new every month. It has been the same formula from the beginning - Grace Faith Obedience. Faith without works (obedience) is dead. James 2:14-26 In The Way of YHVH, the three elements are inseparable. We are not saved by our works/obedience, we are obedient because we are saved and love Him. Justification -> Spirit -> Sanctification. No salvation (justification), no Spirit, no Spirit, no obedience (sanctification). It was the same for Noah, and mankind would not be here if he had not also been obedient.

@@scottintexas Well from what you are saying it seems that you are saying there was an OLD Torah which was good but the NEW Torah has been traditionalized so is no longer the Torah.... which is my point.... it's all MAN. Yes, the NEW Covenant has always been Love God First and Your Neighbor as Yourself.... which is written in your heart when Jesus cleanses you and sends the HS to dwell .... and therefore you will AUTOMATICALLY be motivated to keep the Ten Commandments (pure and simple) not all this other genuflection to be so-called HOLY (righteous) unto God .... in fact I believe He hates it! So by Faith you accepted Christ and what He did for you. Then the Spirit helps you be obedient in order to be sanctified (righteous) before Him. So that's what I said. Before the Blood - After the Blood. But not in Addition to the Blood. And I will add again -- All holidays are satan's detour and deviation from Jesus.... to take glory away from Him. Even birthdays. So .... like why are we celebrating ourselves??? Just like the awards shows! Celebrating the creation rather than the Creator. So mixed with paganism they become pagan altogether. God specifically said He hated that also. Same idea of you can't be a little bit pregnant. The bottom line is..... we CAN'T keep the LAW - old or new - without His help! That's why He looks on the heart. Better to obey than to sacrifice. Easier said than done because the Spirit wars with the body. ..... But easier than the consequences of NOT obeying because He carries us, through absolutely NO deservedness of our own. Thanking Jesus for that!!! Unfathomable love!! Thanks for your reply.

I'd have to agree with Dr. Paul that there was a pagan influence to the origins of Hanukkah since Baal/sun god worship was really widespread by this time period of the Maccabees, and the timing of a festival of lights in the solstice timeframe is just too much of a coincidence to ignore. By then, there was a heavy Greek/ Hellenistic influence on Jewish culture, however in Greek pagan culture, the primary deities for solstice festivals were Poseidon, Demeter, and Dionysus, not Apollo as one may suspect. Perhaps the Jewish peoples saw themselves more aliened to Zeus, the supreme god of the Greeks, and therefore also Apollo, rather than the Greek three previously mentioned. How "eight" or "oil" factors into that, would not come from any Greek source I've come across, since "nine" (ie 9 bull sacrifices) is the number associated with Greek solstice rites.

Yeshua celebrated Hanukkah/The Feast of Dedication during the 2nd temple period. He walked in Solemn's Portico during The Feast of Dedication. This is in The New Testament. Remember when listening to this that both of these men do not believe in Jesus/Yeshua as Messiah. Rabbi Zev Porat gives an excellent explanation of Hannakuh. My remarks are dealing only with the fact that Yeshua celebrated/acknowledged it, but He would have not have celebrated the false pagan eight day made up story. At the time of Yeshua this paganistic part didn't exist.

@@spitflamez Yes, and it's important for us to remember what the Menorah actually represents. The Menorah was to signify being the light to the nations and was to burn continually. Yeshua is The Light. We are told not to mix His Glory with anything. When men's traditions took hold of the Menorah and changed it to 9 instead of the 7 ordained branches it became an idol of man - the Festival of Lights - they changed the meaning of The Menorah and brought it out of The Holy Temple. They did this because they wanted to be like the pagan nations who celebrated the winter solstice.

It’s easy to suggest that it’s likely Judaic tradition has picked up some outside influences and legend as have other non Jewish traditions. But it doesn’t take a genius to assume this and also there seems to be enough evidence in midrashot to suggest this. It’s likely but I think John10 illustrates it was a tradition at least in some aspects, relatively early.

1- Hanukah is not one of the feasts prescribed by God in Leviticus, and is more of a secular holiday, like Thanksgiving. Since it happened after Tanakh was closed, it's not in Tanakh, but it IS in the Greek scriptures. John 10:22-23 shows Jesus going up to the temple for the festival of dedication. So, it was already established by then. (Again, as a secular celebration, not a feast of Yehovah). 2- It always bothers me when people claim to be "rabbis" or "pastors" or "priests," while actively promoting the idea that the bible is nothing more than allegory. Not things that really happened, but just a shared narrative that only serves the point of establishing a shared identity if "us vs. them." ... Which is exactly the OPPOSITE of even the Hebrew scriptures (which, yes, was centered around the descendants of Israel, but Isaiah 49:6 “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” He's not a rabbi. "Pagan" has been misused in English language. Pagan is from Latin "Paganus" that means "ignoble birth" "commoner" or Peasant. So in the Roman Nomenclature, the Jews would be called "Pagans". To correct yourself , you have to stand in the shoes of the Roman Noble Born Elite, that they were the Nobles, not the "Pagans" and that everyone else were ignoble or peasants, so they were Pagans, no matter if they had any religion or no religion. Greeks were Stoics, not ruled by religion , but philosophy and sciences, but they were all Pagans. So the Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar , he was Noble Born Roman , he was not a Pagan. But Jesus would be called "Pagan" by anyone speaking Latin in the Roman Empire, in those days. The term for Heathen would not be equivocal to Pagan , since Heathen may apply to certain religious festivals , such as Baals , while being Pagan , a person may be an Atheist , having no belief in any gods or God. So you have to correct yourself, when you try to discern a Jewish Holiday and a Pagan Holiday , since in the proper speech of Latin , and the Etymology of 'Pagan" then all Jewish Holidays , referred to in ancient history by Roman authors, would be called PAGAN HOLIDAYS. To be a Pagan meant you were not in the Royal Caste or Apartheid Tribalism , of the Noble Romans. So , you must define the terms you use properly to understand your history.

Thanks for the education. I'd been thinking on tha term here recently. My understanding not necessarily correct was pagan had some form of worship a high authority be it a rock, as is the dominant form of a higher authority which many people now - in lifestyle choices; and that heathens were those who did what ever when ever with whom or whatever suited their fancy whatever, which presently many if not most western world peoples now live that life style of whomever what whenever I feel like doing. So according to the Ancient Latin lexicon you have corrected moi.

Purim to Hanukkah is always a pregnancy apart, even in leap year. Shepherds in the Field, at Hanukkah? Luke 2;1,2,3 & 8, Birth in the spring assumption comes from "Shepherds in the Field" for spring at lambing time. The course of Abijah from Luke 1;5 is the starting time for calculations people use. But the Bible/Jewish calendar isn't exactly 51 weeks, which is the only way Abijah could be the same time 2x a year. So birth at lambing time using Abijah and Shepherds in the Field is a false calculation assumption. Luke 1;1 and 3 clearly states that "all" were to be enrolled. It does not state an exemption is given to Shepherds. That means the shepherds would have to bring their flocks with them. Even if it's the beginning of winter as in the month of Kislev. Luke 1;26, the 6th month Adar could be a time stamp for Luke 1;5-36. But these are Jewish holidays/customs that were forbidden for Romans, Acts 16;20, 21. What did God say about pagan ways put upon Him? Deuteronomy 12:29-32. Dec. 25th swapped for Kislev 25th. ? Celebrating B-days pagan? Purim - Salvation thru the "role" of a woman, Hanukkah - Cleanse the Temple (body though Yeshua)?

Holidays come along as the believers walk. As Christmas that all Bibelreaders know is not the correct birthday of The Saviour. A pagan holiday were used to celebrate the birth, not knowing when it occured, by the harassed congregation in hiding, exept for this event, celebrating with drink and partying, a safe time for the acused. As the jewish new year as well, that should logically be at first aviv, the beginning of the year. Christmas has bin a question among christian, but not seriously, since it has become a reminder of christianity. Very pagan, indeed, since the pagan ikons is more and more The part of that holiday, and less and less a reminder of christianity Passover even worse, since we have crime series on TV and new crime books and films opening at that holiday. That holiday is based on an old holiday for real, but have lost every meaning of anything else than holiday as such. To be shocked, is too strong. Trying to bring holidays back to what we learn is true, has no suksess so far. As religious steal pagan holidays, pagans steal religious holidays, seemingly people need holidays, and few manage to make holidays their own for real.
