When the first Pagani Huayra made its appearance at a meet for Pagani owners, evo's Harry Metcalfe was there to take a ride.
The new Pagani Huayra is one of the most eagerly awaited supercars with the promise of 720bhp from its mid-mounted 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged engine - enough power to blast it to an estimated 235mph top speed.
Our man Harry Metcalfe got a chance to see the Huayra up close at an event for Pagani owners in Sardinia - there are some advantages to having a Zonda in the garage.

This is one of those cars that I would not be able to stop smiling the whole time I am driving. The only problem I find with this car is eventually I would have to stop to sleep.

Agreed! These cars are designed to show Ferrari they can be beaten. The interior and exterior is so beautiful they beat any other car in terms of looks, the fact they use AMG engines just means they aren't all mouth no trousers, these cars go as fast as they look.

People think this car was made to replace the Zonda. It is simply another model Pagani makes. Just like how Ferrari makes the 458 Italia, and the F12 Berlinetta.

You need to look into the Zonda S and before. The Zonda did NOT sound and look as intense as it does today. It didn't have the "WOW effect" until the Zonda F. If you consider comparing the Huarya to the starting Zonda models then this thing should be equally as impressive when the next evolution (much like the Zonda F) is released. I'm sure they can work out a way to make it shouty like a Zonda F and they can dress it equally as tough and unique. Pagani's not going to lay his cards out so early.

First of all It Does NOT sound like a vacuum cleaner..It has an Amazing Turbo noise. And at first i didn't like the looks But now it just looks astonishing..It Has a Nice looking interior which is very expensive.thoes speedometers are worth like a thousand euros.......but I don't like the name....I kinda like the key.but it looks like a USB stick......All in All...One of the Best supercars in the world.And that includes the Zonda,but i like the Zonda more though!!Amazing job Horacio!

First of all I'd like to emphasize that I feel respect for Mr. Pagani and his work as a designer. I just meant that new car hasn't got the "WOW effect" on me as the Zonda did. The old car had a unique character which made it radically different from the super cars of that time. I think the new car lost this charm. The fact, that I don't really like it, doesn't mean it's a badly engineered car. Though, I really hope that a possible following model will follow the path what the Zonda established.

Let him do what he does (I mean, it is his company and we all should be entirely grateful that he graced us with his wonderful product in the first place) and maybe you should cross your fingers for the Huayra's successor to be a return to the Zonda's characteristics. All that being said.. I wasn't sure about the Huayra either when first released but when I treated it as a hole new vehicle and not a Zonda.. it completely grew on me. I'm sure it would for you too if you did the same.

I see what you mean, but, the truth is that it is NOT a Zonda and was never supposed to be. Horacio Pagani has went out of his way to make this fact clear by saying that this is a hole new vehicle following a hole new path. If he just wanted to rehash on the Zonda design for another ten years then he would've kept it in production. There's no reason why he can't re-invent his product and give the world something new. I mean, I don't think he can perfect on the Zonda's pre existing perfection.

I don't know what I expected. I'm just... You see, when I saw a video about the Zonda for the first time it simply blew me away. I was amazed at the noise it made. I played it again and again. I couldn't have enough of it. It's something different. Let's say the design is OK for the umpteenth look. But the way it sounds... Was it really necesary to turbocharge the engine for extra ca. 50 hp? This engine sounds even better in the new MB SL65 AMG BS. Anyway, I won't be able to afford one.

1) The new Pagani sounds like vacuum cleaner. It's a shame because Zonda had far the best sound in the world of supercars. 2) The new Pagani looks like if it was designed by Ssangyong. (using some design components from the old Zonda) 3) The interior is horrible. The dashboard looks like a slot machine, the ignition key is just like a $5 usb stick, etc. 4) The new Pagani's name sounds like why... why... why did you ruin the best car in the world? As a Zonda fan I'm terribly disappointed. :(

Isn't that what supercars are supposed to be about? Appealing to the little kid inside us all? I look at the cars that Ferrari is churning out these days and I don't see that same appeal. Instead, I see a delicate and quirkily styled car with Banglesque geometry and panel treatments. Believe me, the Huayra will look incredible in the flesh. Horatio doesn't fool around... Very talented guy.

The 288GTO was nothing incredible - less powerful than the F40 and heavier. Basically a re-engined 308. The F40 on the other hand, now that was an absolute masterpiece. Lightweight, raw, unforgiving. It was an analog machine with steering that was said to be alive. To compare it with the 458 is sacrilege I don't know how you could say that Pagani is ugly as shit, yet think that the 458 is gorgeous. I once spent 15 minutes looking at a 458, trying to find an aspect that I liked. I failed.

okkk, first time i se the car filmed in such detail. spotted a few probs. the LCDs of the climate and audio, are like my old made in china wrist watch. dial lights are like an xmas tree.buttons of climate and audio seem like membrane buttons of a microwave. the steering wheel is ...odd. when removing the key u hit the stick. dont wanna be a troll but it's a far cry from the aventador, for ex. nice turbo sound tho`

@DoomDriver I don't know what it is but maybe Italians are humble with their English. The current Republic of Ireland football manager Giovanni Trapattoni always has an interpreter present for press conferences even tough I've seen him being interviewed without her and his level of English is pretty good. I think he and Pagani would get flustered and frustrated if they are searching for a particular word to express themselves. I do it too and I'm a native English speaker. It's just rarer for me.

@tomallain rotary engines refined ?? An unreliable almost unrepairable rotary engine burns more fuel than a 7.0ltr V8 in a Z06.How cool is it to own a car you cant fix sitting in the driveway.AMG V8s outsell the v12 in germany a v12 ohc with 40 valves??? or maybe with a ride like that that you can just pay somebody.I agree thay do sound nice not as nice as a v8.That pagani will require alot of routine service just to stay roadworthy.there is just too much junk under the hood.

@iou5k9 Except for the fact that they don't make those announcements at malls, and will simply slap you with a massive fine and possibly a boot. Then, with enough of those citations they'll impound the vehicle. And prior to it being ticketed, every person going into the mall will take turns keying it for having such massive brass cojones to park such a vehicle in the handicap spots.

@Janusha Its a fact, it was video recorded....That is a lame ass cop out. BTW I have said repeatedly I would pick a Pagani over a vette so......why do you keep beating that dead horse. I have rode in both the Zr1 and the 458 in no way is the ferrari anywhere near as fast at the vette. Yet I would still rather have the ferrari. How is that flag waving of mine sounding to you now.

@Janusha I own a Toyota. Im not some dumb fool who buys cars according to its country of origin. I have no issues with any car its you who have an issue with the vette. Im not flag waving your anti-flag waving. You have a problem with generalizing, all GM are not daewoos with a bowtie. CTS-V pioneered the braking system in the 458. The vette goes faster then all but 2 cars in the world around the nurburgring for under 100k. If you dont like it, Get over it, dont buy one.

@edmata1991 Bugatti has sold 300 Veyrons, and they halted production just to let the car remain exclusive. Even though orders are still coming in from the rich and famous, they decided not to make more of them. How many Koenigseggs and Paganis are sold? Pagani expect around 50 of their Huayra's to be sold in the coming years and so far not a single Koenigsegg Agera R has been sold or even independently tested. Btw, the Agera R gets that output IF driven on Ethanol (E85) fuel, not regular gas

@edmata1991 Yes, and how reliable will that 1115hp of the Koenigsegg be?? With turbos you can get insane amounts of horsepower just by raising the boost, but at the expense of driveability, control and reliability. The Veyron has smaller turbos on a high displacement engine, they designed to take those 1001hp reliably for years, and in insane conditions. Koenigseggs have a reputation of spinning out of control and breaking down after a while. A rich Norwegian sold his back to the factory.

Horacio Pagani is a living God! He and Mr. Bugatti are the 2 top car makers on planet Earth! No other companies are even close to them. Here in America every car we offer is a total embarassment compared to the Gems produced by Pagani and Bugatti. Their cars make Ferrari and Lamborghini look American made...which is the biggest insult you can give a car...saying it's made in America.

I'm sure it sounded like my vacuum cleaner at one point! Love the technical aspect gone into the car, like under the Aston Martin One-77 body, beautiful and clever technical design, only Pagani carry it into the cabin! It's a bit like old school Rolls Royce? Awesome machine, and in our recession it joins the ever growing club of 1 million pound plus super cars! God damn those bankers raped it in of us all!!!

Can't say that I'm sold on this new pagani. The zonda looked great, sounded awesome. this new 1 looks too much, massive pagani on the back(in case you didn't know) stupid active aero which look like they are coming up and down unevenly. The engine just does not suit the car, Don't get me wrong, I love turbo stuff but not on this type of car, too much whoosh and dump, it's just not right in my book.

@shobin05 It doesn't sound as good as the Zonda F. It doesn't scream and sing the way the Zonda F did- that high pitched V12 howl is unlike any other sound. Watch the Top Gear Zonda F episodes if you haven't already seen them. The Huayra, at this time at least, doesn't sound nearly as amazing as the Zonda F. It sounds somewhat like the original Zonda. I still want one though. haha

I like it a lot - iv´e been looking at pictures of it for a while to figure what they have done. And i think this will grow a lot over time, its both very classic and modern and have more compactness that shows in many of the new Supersportscars like the 458 and the recent Porsche Concept. And i like the "Turbosound" - it´s different like a mix of Buggatti and a jet - and i think for this segment, being different is really important.

Ahahahah, i hope that was sarcasm. It's a fucking space ship, i've been in the Zonda and that is an animal but this is a refined street machine that just inhales massive amounts of air. I love this car if anyone doesn't like it its basically called jealousy as they cannot afford such a beautiful machine.

How do you judge someone on their English speaking abilities if you can't even tell that the person is one of your own people.. He most likely started speaking English when he started shipping his cars to English speaking parts of the world and most likely doesn't have any formal lessons in the language. You must give him props for what he can do

You can hear Horacio Pagani grunting at 1:11 after Harry pulls out the ignition key and slams the gear shift knob with it! With 75 parts to it, the gear shifter must cost 250K alone. You must use "grace" and "class" around automobile royalty like Mr. Pagani! Next time use both hands, or try a workout before!

I disagree. I think that the 458 looks disastrous and that the Huayra is less offensive to the Pagani brand than what the 458 is to Ferrari. Thats just me. Pagani tend to develop their cars further as they mature... Just look at how many incarnations of the Zonda there are. I like this thing already, but I'm sure it will get better as time goes on.

Anybody who says that this car sounds bad, or at least worse than the "regular" Zonda need to check their hearing, this sound is other worldly! Dear god! Now don't think I'm hating on the Zonda, I LOVE a car that sing and roars like the Zonda, but the Huayra is just on another level! You can't compare them - they are both just amazing!

@EmptySoulRSR: The engine in the SLS is not charged (ou, alpha was faster). Diesel-Engines are not comparable to Petrol-Engines. To create a lot horsepower from small engines without turbo- or superchargers, is only possible with high revs and expencive sollutons and materials. To bolt a Charger to the engine is not a big effort.

@Italyay2010 AMG origionally was a seperate company that tuned engines for mercedes started by 2 engineers from mercedes ,then several years ago mercedes purchased the AMG brand and now AMG is owned my Mercedes,search mercedes-amg com/#/amg-history before you make comments always make sure you know what your talking about

@Janusha I from the US, AND I like the Vette but I deal with reality, most Americans do. This car is on a different level. Not only will this car smoke a ZR1 LOOK AT IT, its a space ship. @davidleadfoot The reason they act unevenly is because the car requires different amounts of downforce on each side depending on the cornering. There's a racer that lives in my are that has a BMW with a rear with that acts like that actually designed by MIT. If you want to check it out search Vic Sias Aero Motions

@Tigermoto1 Man...Im from Argentina i live at 200miles from Casilda (the place where Horacio Pagani was born) so i know the right way to pronunce it ! in Spanish sound like that why-ra ...the problem its the letter "H" ...in spanish doesnt have a sound ... it should be "Uayra"... "uay" sounds like "Why" ...and "ra" like the "ra" in Dodge "RAM"

The only thing I can agree with you on is that the name of the car is terrible. Everything else is just brilliant. If you are strictly a zonda fan, then fine be upset about the car, but any true Pagani fan would say that it is a wonderful new flagship for the company.

I can live without the sound of the engine but MY GOD what an amazingly beautiful and stunning car. Horacio himself has stated the Huayra is technically the successor to the zonda, but in reality it's a completely different car. It's not exactly a softer car, but it isn't as extreme as the zonda.

hands down the best engineered car of the 21st century.. may not look the best. but the quality and craftsmanship put into it makes up for any actual design issues. i say the Aventador looks better. but this car quality design is by far better. and then again the price reflects that.

@classiccafe1 I'm sorry for you but AMG is a company autonomous, it doesn't share anything with Mercedes-Benz, it started with creating engines for Mercedes-Benz but it isn't associated to it infact nowadays AMG has started to create engines for Pagani too :)

Well for starters get your facts straight, he is not an italian enterpreneur, he is an Argentinian one. Secondly, he speaks Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and some basic English. So yeah ... he has the language thing covered pretty well.

OMG....All i can hear is turbos.What happened to that sweet AMG v12 sound. Why must every car brand put turbos in their cars....pfffffffffffff oh well.What can you do about it. I guess saving the planet is more important of course....

I have never been a fan of any of these types of cars. It is pretty ugly and over-done, tacky is one word that comes to mind. Wonderful car but they need to pull back. Naturally aspirated V12 should reside inside. I dislike turbo cars, never liked them.

When I saw the driver of the Huayra, I firstly thought: "Hmmf, an old man......" but then, I noticed, it was HORACIO PAGANI, WTF?! The holy god of supersports cars! He is such an amazing guy and the Huayra (weird name :S ) looks soooooo awesome! ;D

Space ship on wheels! Lol think the gauges and crome trim are over the top tho. Makes the interior look like something out of a kids movie like Speed Racer. On yea lol at the fact that it looks like there are sack coolers in the seats. Lmao.
