Great that I called in sick, knew my company offered paid sick leave, and WILL NOT GET PAID because I did not provide a separate written request at the exact time that said “Please pay me for this sick day.”

Can the employer for any reason ( ie.not having a doctor's note) deny the employee use of their accrued sick hours in 2024?

Would love to know how 40 hours OR 5 days is decided? Specifically for someone on a 4 10 hour day schedule. Thank you!

From what I've read, you would get 50 hours since 5 x 10 hour shift = 50. Saw this on a site... "Starting on January 1, 2024, an employer must allow an employee to use at least five days or 40 hours, whichever is more (refer to DLSE Opinion Letter 2015.08.07). Therefore, for example, if an employee works 10‑hour days, the employee will be entitled to use at a minimum 50 hours of paid sick leave."
