Regarding the training with Wilhelm - Subaru WAS training, but I think Wilhelm (and Felix) sensed that he was just kindof throwing himself at the training and not truly absorbing/learning anything from it. Sortof like "doing it for appearances", but I think Subaru WANTED to get better, he just didn't realize or understand that he wasn't training with intent, if that makes sense. He wasn't focused on actually getting better, since he's too focused on the obsession with Emilia and self-righteously saying "I'm the only one who can help her".
10:40 what I think Wilhelm meant by the abandoning the option to get stronger thing is that he had a good sense or read of Subaru's mindset change and how he was thinking. He suddenly became so self-assured of himself and his capabilities (Subaru thinks to himself "If I just get a chance, I can make any problem go away!") and Wilhelm was seeing it like Subaru felt like he already had everything 'solved' essentially, he was just training to look like he was actually 'doing something'. Like how earlier in the season Wilhelm observed of Subaru something like "his eyes show that he has experience with death many times", he's an old man with a good read of him. In Ep18 (which i know you've seen now so thankfully no spoilers lol) Subaru mentions how Wilhelm saw through his act perfectly too. At least that's how I've understood it, I could just be waffling lol.
So to clear up why Crusch called them enemies is because they are, they made an agreement due to Felix being an incredibly renowned healer to heal Subarus gate. We dont know how, maybe Roswaal payed them or did something but thats what the meeting from earlier was about. Their agreement is to heal Subaru, him leaving nullifies the contract Crusch made with Emilia/Roswaal since hes running back home. They are saying he should just listen to Emilia and stay, finish his treatment, then go back home. They worked together here purely due to a transactional agreement, Crusch is friendly but she realizes they are political enemies. Meaning they were probably offered something really good to agree to this. And yes you are completely right, Subaru is having a manic episode basically which is why hes acting off. His pride was hurt and hes desperately trying to prove himself because he has horrible self esteem. And he has a power thats only useful when he fails or dies. Which is a horrible combination… basically being harmed being the only way you can feel useful to those around you
This is a long post so excuse me. This is my 2 cents as to how Julius was protecting Subaru. While Julius might seem arrogant, I actually find him to be an agreeable guy. He was made to look bad because of Subaru's own jealousy. He never looked down on Subaru even during their first meeting, Subaru was the one who was actually hostile. During the Royal Selection, Subaru's self-proclamation as a Knight just spit on the hard work and effort of the knights. If someone with no achievements, strength, or training can just come to the Royal Selection and claim that they are a Knight, then what is the point of the hard work and effort of all the Imperial Knights, in front of the future rulers to boot. This angered the Knights and, initially, Julius. That's why he stepped up and questioned Subaru for his choice of words, bringing up valid points. However, he realized Subaru's resolve, he might be physically weak but he saw Subaru's resolve won't lose to any of the knights. That's why he said that he accepts his resolve, but not his proclamation as a knight since he still lacks the strength. Now comes the duel, Julius publicly announced the duel and shamed and beat up Subaru in front of all the Knights. The reason for this is because the Knights, or at least some of them, really hated Subaru and plans to kill him. Julius realized Subaru's resolve, but the knights didn't. The purpose of this duel was to appease the anger of the Knights so that they wouldn't kill Subaru. That's why near the end of the duel, the Knights looked at Subaru with pity since he's getting beat up one-sidedly, he was thrashed and humiliated so much by Julius that they didn't want to kill him anymore. However, this tarnished Julius' career, as this looked like he was bullying a weak and defenseless man, as this goes against the Code of Chivalry. This was Julius protecting him. He exchanged his honor for the sake of Subaru's life. He might look and seem like an elitist and an asshole, but Julius is a good man.
@@farohreacts Np I sometimes forget these could be days or a few weeks in advance. This series is one of my Top Shows love sharing new information since it can even confuse me I have watched it a few times. The Mysteries of the Witches and the world, and world buildin intrigues me to the core.
julius definitely did what was best for subaru! he purposefully went a bit overboard with him so the knights would think he’s deserved enough and not go after him after all the stuff he said. he also tarnished his reputation as the finest of knights by doing that and was punished, so basically if he didn’t do all that then subaru would not be having a great time in the capital haha. Also subaru was waayyy more of an ass than julius was! especially cuz of more info later in the series that completely recontextualized the scene of him and subaru arguing in front of everyone! its why i love rezero sm cuz u can rewatch it a million times and u’ll still find something new. Also im saying this cuz ik u finished season 1 !! but even subaru acknowledges he messed up back then, he still hates him for embarrassing him but he knows he was the one at fault, which is such an amazing moment of growth for subaru, not only apologizing to the girl he loves but also to someone else that he wronged
