I once lent a book to my girlfriend back then, she took more than two months in giving it back and when she did, the broken parts of the books were fixed, the edges were clean and it sort of smelled like her. In our anniversary she gifted me the third part of said book, that’s the best experience I’ve had lending them. I’m lucky, now I see.
Book nerd rule of thumb: never lend a book you care about. Only lend books you're ready to lose or give up forever. Most people never return books anyway.
I've learned that the hard way. Back when I was in primary school, we had some library thing going on in my class where children would bring books to donate to the class. My teacher said that we would be able to get our books back when we were leaving the school. This was in 2019. Foolish me donated all my Diary of a wimpy kid books (I had the entire series at the time) Then Covid hits, and when it was time for me to go into secondary school, I only got back 5/12 books. One of the five books was written in with markers, pens, crayons, etc. And in another book, my friend glued a bunch of flowers and hearts on the pages. The rest of my books looked like they've went through a war or something (The pages were yellow and some were torn, one even had several bite marks along the spine) So yeah, I'm never sharing my books ever again
I had a teacher who lent me her most precious books and i guarded them with my life. I usually lie down while reading but with those books i sat at the table , didn't eat or anything. It's so important to respect what people value. Those books are her life and she's lending me these for me to read. I should be respectful.its such a basic concept, dunno why many don't understand it.
See, the thing is, I'll treat my own books this way. I dog-ear. I annotate. I aggressively shove my current read in my backpack when I'm in a rush. I don't mind the wear and tear. It makes the copy really feel like it's mine. But I would NEVER treat someone ELSE'S book like that, and I would expect the same respect. Just because I annihilate my books doesn't mean you get to.
Since we’re sharing book-loaning horror stories: the one and only time I ever lent someone my personal copy of my favorite book, she returned it with the spine cracked in half, reeking of cigarettes, and yellowed like it had been left in full sun for months. Needless to say I have never allowed anyone else to read my books.
Omg reeking of cigarettes.. that's disgusting 😭 I am afraid that is happening to my book too. I lent it to a "friend" who started smoking since then. Still haven't got it back.
My heart literally skips a beat when watching the video, but what surprises me even more is how horrible the stories in the comment section are. I myself feel so lucky reading those. My family is very supportive of me being a book nerd, and most of my friends in highshool are booklovers and they always return my books with no damage. My deskmate in highschool is an artist, and she even designed her own bookmarks for me. When I used a ruler as bookmark, she would come and say "oh so you need more? I can draw more for you". We can never imagine how to read books without having bookmarks, like our books are too precious to be fold. I think I can always lend someone my books, as long as I know they are also a booklover.
I once, ONCE lent a shadow hunters book to a friend in highschool, after almost two months *despite she saying that she read pretty fast* she gave it back and, NOT ONLY did she mess up the pages by not using a bookmark, but she also WROTE and OVERLINED the words she didn't understand with a BALLPOINT PEN. I-I, I WAS FUMING. never gave another book to her no matter how much she begged me. No ma'm. You just dont do that to things that are not yours. 😤🥴🤦🏻♀️ almost forgot to say, she also covered it in some clear sticky plastic to "protect it" because it wasn't a hard cover. 🤡
I believe this is usually the tactic that someone use when they want to own a book without buying it. They can't do that on library book, so the best way is to get it from a friend. It's freaking ridiculous! There are a lot of them out there and I loathe them. Good on you for no longer giving her any of your books.
A friend of mine loaned my book to her fiance, who then took it with him when he moved abroad. I was so angry I made sure to nag enough that when he came back for vacation he brought the book back with him. Might have ruined my friendship but at least I have my book back.
My mom got me the whole Stormlight Archive series by Brandon Sanderson. After I read them, my little brother wanted to as well so I let him borrow the first one. When he gave it back, the cover had been torn and folded, the spine was torn up, and I learned that he was the type of person who just flips the book over and leaves it on the ground instead of using a bookmark. I refused to give him the second book and I will never let him read any of my books ever again
My best friend wanted to read my copy of "A Game of Thrones" and when I told him all rules he needs to aceept about carrying the book he said: "I don't want it anymore!" I was so happy.
One time I was in a local production of beauty and the beast and the person playing belle wanted to use a book as a prop and I was one of only two ppl who actually had a book on me (I’d read it when I wasn’t doing anything) so i leant it to her for the scene. We run the scene. She gets up on stage, my book in her hand. Song starts. Immediately, she opens the book w i d e and the spine CRACKS. I was so annoyed coz it wasn’t even my book. I was just borrowing it.
My experience with people borrowing books is… you hardly see those books again. My grandma has a huge collection of books and since my childhood I remember people taking books and not returning them. At one point, I convinced my grandma to write somewhere who took what and when, and when we won’t hear back from them for awhile, call them and ask to return the book. It worked but she did it for a short time and then stopped.
even as someone who doesn't read as often, this is just blatant disrespect for other people's property. I especially feel the first one as an artist, I hate when people just put a drink on my drawing book
I once gave a book to a friend and when she brought it back, the spine was so ripply and bent… she didn‘t use a bookmark. Instead the book just lay open on her bedside table 🥲 when I read soft cover books I‘m usually really careful about not bending them too much and always, ALWAYS using a boomark 😬
I once had a friend borrow my book. It was returned to me 2 years later, by a different person. And I found out that 3 people had borrowed it before I got it back. The pages were yellowing and the first few were torn. I don't really let people borrow my books anymore.
Back at one of my old jobs I used to regularly bring books to work to read while I was on break. There was a spot on a filing cabinet in the back office that had been designated for me to leave my book while I worked so it could stay safe, and I hadn't had any problems for over three years. One day I decided it was safe to bring in a book that was worth a couple hundred dollars (old rare edition, gorgeous cover, all that), and the moment I turned away a new guy brought an open cold drink into the office (which wasn't allowed) and not only set it on the filing cabinet (which had a sign explicitly saying do not do that) but directly on my book! I turned around and stopped him before a ring could form thank goodness, but that will always be the one day in my four years at that job anyone heard me scream at someone. I never chanced a rare book again.
We had a book-exchange at work. I had brought in about 20 books and hoped they would find a new home. We got a new boss. When she saw me pick out a book one of my co-workers had left to the book exchange she said: "-You can not bring that book home, they are for reading during lunch breaks and such. We would not want for any of them to go missing now would we?" So all of sudden all my books and those of my co-workers belonged to the workplace...
I'm annoyed when my mom puts stuff over my books, and I don't usually share my books cuz have a bad experience doing that. Ahhh it's hard to make people understand that we love our books and love more the treasures in them.
I actually had an argument with my ex about folding book corners. She used to do it to books that I had borrowed from the library. She couldn't understand why I cared so much. It just feels really disrespectful. It's a work of art and should be treated as such.
My aunt ruined this absolutely stunning edition of the night circus I had. It had beautiful black edges, this gorgeous hardback. It's no longer available... So can't even be replaced
@@MegaSpideyman Just read it! It's better not explained although... It kinda does require specific taste I guess... Do you like fantasy and magical realism? If yes Then Read it!
@@MegaSpideyman the magic of that book is how atmospheric it is. You can even taste what the author describes to you. It's about a night circus that comes to town, but yes like the other commenter said I don't want to explain too much. I just know I adored it
So funny and so true. I've actually gone out and bought another copy of a book to loan to someone (basically a gift because I didn't expect them to return it. They didn't.)
Had it happen to me once. Borrowed like two books to a friend of mine. Two weeks later I received them back with cracked spines to the middle (they were both brand new), one had been dropped in a bathtub, folded ears, and even her mom had read them. They came back completely destroyed and with some pages sticking out. Out of spite I never gave back the three books she lend me in return 💀
I borrowed my friend (who likes reading very much) 2 books of the same author and after like a year I asked her to return them and she said she only found one of them and then she returned only one. the conversation ended there like she was thinking I only imagined giving her 2 books (because she had only 1, right? :)) she wasn't even sorry or smth
You lent your friend the books. If you had borrowed, the books would be hers and you'd have them for free for a while. Since the books are yours to lend, you've lent them.
Lmao too true. My sister once used my book to place her drink on top of and Idk why I guess I was too nice to say anything. But that book now have a nice round dried water ring on the cover, hence why Im so vocal about my books now. And yes, I dont let anyone borrow my books unless them themselves are book worms and understand how to treat a book.
I once borrowed a book from a friend that i really liked by the description and wanted to check it out. The book was really good although in my house books for my baby brother were a toy 😭 i would literally fight for that book with my heart bc i knew if he put his hands on it i wouldn't be able to look my friend in the eyes. I ended up reading the book for 3 days and it was really good. I immediately went to her house to give it back and i was relieved for her to say it didnt have a scratch.
once in third grade i had this alice in wonderland book which had a pretty pink hardcover. loved that book from the bottom of my heart. a friend from school borrowed it and, well, i dont know where she is now. she just left the school and never gave me my book. never let anyone lend my book after that, and im glad i learnt the lesson soon.
I led a program overseas and english books are super rare and valuable. One student was super into sherlock holmes and decided she wanted to read every one. I lent her 5 sherlock holmes books. All the students were evacuated during Corona. I thought I would find the books in the house but no...she took them with her.
HOLY COW I am hungry so can't focus and my brain repeatedly read your opening sentence as ''I lead a pogrom overseas'' D: But anyway, nuuuu. I let a girl at school _look at_ my brand new copy of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when I was a kid. Our family was uber poor so it was a huge thing for me getting a new book. So I let her _LOOK AT_ it. Not to touch or borrow, just look. And she _DROOLED_ over the cover by accident because she had her mouth open while she was looking, a huge string of drool came out and got all over the front image :c I cried, heh. But at least she didn't run away with it! sorry the girl ran away with your Sherlock Holmes books. I pretty much avoid having friends these days because I'd be so sad if anyone ran away with my Sherlock Holmes collection, or any of my other book collections! Hopefully you can get your books back 🙏
Sorry to hear that :( I know people often say "just buy them again" if you lose a book. Well that is easy enough sure (as long as you have the money). But a lot of times copies of books have sentimental value tied to them too, and that can not just be bought again
This was my worst nightmare as a kid. Id lend someone a book and it wouod come back with dog ears and for some reason the person had written on the cover. I was respectful whenever i borrowed from somone. If i didnt have a bookmark id just remember the page.
I won't even open my books all the way. I don't want to damage the spines. I still have my first editions of the Thrawn trilogy from the early 90's.. IN PRESTINE condition.
@@Musiclover-rt1ej I am in my mid 30s now and started reading a lot when I was in high school (or maybe late middle school). Then I fell out of reading during college and for a while after graduating. For the past 5 years though I have been getting back into reading a lot more than I ever have
with star wars expanded universe stuff i am careful, but with new books i just do what i like with them. i don't really collect books and it's nice to lend them to people, even if they end up looking bad after
@adonian - that’s exactly what I do too 😁 I won’t ever open my books all the way. It’s nice to know there are others like that out there. I’ve never met anyone else that does the same thing as I do lol
Fun story I was reading The Catcher In The Rye and had it in my backpack. Went to put my laptop in and heard a tear. When i looked the cover was torn almost halfway out of the book. My pain could not be measured.
I had a small handbag, containing an older book with very thin pages, in which I put my phone. Later on I took it out and it seemed the phone had slipped between the pages, crushing/wrinkling/tearing them
I once had to lend some of my books to my mom's friend's kids and when I got them back after probably a year, I had to hold a funeral for them of sorts, the condition was so bad. Pages torn from one side to the other, badly fixed, pencil everywhere. I still get nightmares.
A law of nature: The less available a book is, the greater the damage a borrower will inflict on it. Never, ever lend an antique book (or for that matter, let your “friends” even see it.)
You missed the *1 Week Later:* "Hey man, have you finished that book yet?" "What book?" "...The one I lent you?" "OH! Right. Not yet. I've been crazy busy - haven't even started yet." "No worries. Read it soon." 😅 "Definitely! I'll read it as soon as I have time... It should still be in my bag, I think..." "Should be...?" 😥 "Don't worry. It's definitely in my house somewhere. I just have to find it." *2 Weeks Later* "I'm never going to see that book again..." *5 Years Later* "Hey man! I was goin' through some old junk, and I think this was your book from a while back. Do you want it back?" "..." Sees that it's covered in cup stain marks, the book cover is all wrinkled, pages are bent and discolored, binding is warped, and all around just looks WRECKED. "........... Yes... Please give it back...." And then, to the book, when you're finally alone. "I will never let anyone touch you ever again. I'm SO sorry." 😭
My wife puts drinks on my books all the time! It bothers me but I’ve always just thought I was being ungrateful, I mean she got me a drink, which is a kind thing to do. So pleased to find out that it bothers other people too!
I remember my sister got a book, "Please don't feed the Vampire" and she put it in her really dirty backpack that needed to be cleaned out, and when i took it out there were *crayon marks all over the bottom, and i was so mad.*
Not me going 'hell no' multiple times watching this. My family knows better at this point, and just in case, I keep all my books in my room. I don't play this game anymore. The disrespect. Lol
The struggle is real, a good portion of my room is dedicated to my books and occasionally I lend them to my friends and when I do, it’s often painful 😭.
i always put stuff i care about in far away, unreacheble and unnoticable corner. not just books, but my phone, my charger, my glasses. if stranger came into my house they legit would not notice where my stuff is. this kind of practice served me very well over the years.
Ahh, see, I see my ratty books as a badge of pride. They've passed through many hands, touched many people, lived full and long lives. So now, even when I buy something brand new, I'm that person who will write in the margins, fold down the corners, leave it in places it'll get sunbleached or water damaged or attacked by the cat. But by god, I'd only ever do that to _my own books._
Same here. I don't like when they don't feel "lived in." Like the book is saying, "Come inside! The adventure awaits!" A pristine looking book is sad to me.
I liked, unliked, then liked again at the last line, lol. I love seeing used books, books that have been annotated and loved. But if I ever see someone do that to a book that isn’t theirs? Gosh
I love books with marks, l fell they have more personality ☺️, but same I only do that to mine, others people books I’ll take care of them with my life!
I once gave a book to my classmate, a month later the book looked like it aged 5 years and on some pages I saw little bits of chocolate. After that experience I always say "I see a tear, a mark, etc on the book - you can keep it and obligated to buy me a new one"
Omg! I relate to this video so much because I'm the type of reader who deeply cares for the book cover and the pages! I don't even let people touch my books(including my family members).
Story time: At one of my old jobs all the employees had their own cubbies for their stuff. They were all labeled too. I brought a book I was going to lend to a coworker and had it in my cubbie. SOMEONE PUT THEIR OWN DRINK IN MY CUBBIE ON MY BOOK!!!! I'm still not over that.
I have never borrowed anyone a book ever but I have two books that I am borrowing from a friend and he told me to look after them cuz his books are precious to him like every book lovers are
The dog-earing books hurt more than the bag did for me. I have trouble fitting books in bags on occasion. Then I discovered the lovely invention that is book sleeves. Well done video and painfully relatable. On a different note: I love that granny square coaster so much. I can't make coasters unless they are single-crochet cause I want smaller holes so condensation doesn't leak through as badly.
I don’t loan books out anymore. Most of them are never returned, and the few that are, are always damaged. I remember my husband suggesting that we put my books in our basement… our basement had over 90% humidity when the de-humidifier was turned off. I put my foot down. No way was I subjecting my precious books to that kind of abuse.
Books are not for basements. They are for some place where you will see them regularly. Living room and bedroom are the best, unless you are rich enough to have a library in your home.
My mom is currently reading my leatherbound copy of Warbreaker, and it sits on the living room table at the moment. One time, my dad was eating some Serbian smoked meat (lots of fat) and put the bag with the meat on top of the freaking book. My $100 leatherbound book, that I want to be an heirloom one day. I took the bag off and wiped the book immediately but it smelled like pig fat and smoke for days. Honestly pretty proud of myself for not flipping shit and verbally tearing him a new one. God knows he deserved it. He didn't even notice. Just kept eating his disgusting smoked meat.
Holy moly I felt this so much. Every time by family members take my books (or even other stuff) they just throw it onto other place with little care and I try always not to destroy the books let alone have small dents in the covers. I often put them in a separate bag inside a backpack just to avoid scratches.
I love your humor and understanding of the book lovers And that was painful, but it's missing one thing: when you get the book back 1 year later with a thick layer of dust and the words "I forgot about it because I didn't like it". Also, I once saw someone using a slice of sausage as a bookmark. I think that's worse than dog ears. Edit: just found out that "dust cover" was too direct a translation and not what I meant
I don't mind dog earing my books (not as a bookmark, but to show what pages I really liked) but if someone else did that to my book, I'd be fuming! Same with library books. You just don't do that.
I used to be like this until I started making myself buy secondhand books in PARTICULAR ones that were already damaged. now it doesn’t matter who does what to my book, I am not anxious about it accidentally getting creased in my bag or the cover damaged in the sun... and I love the way they all look, vintage-esque and well-loved!
I felt that pain.....as I m a book lover... I love to read novels.... ❤️❤️❤️ Nd as the title says.... Pain only book lovers will understand or relate.... I was able to relate it, completely, I was feeling bad, nd angry...🥺🥺😑😫😒 But loved ur this video,.!!❤️❤️❤️❤️ U got a new subscriber!!❤️❤️❤️ Btw,... I hadn't lend any book to anyone... But It's still very relatable, nd funny nd kind made my heart skip some beat...🥺😂😇💯❤️❤️❤️❤️
The perks of being an anti-social book nerd are that I never have to experience this. I forgot that this has happened to me so much that I dont feel pain anymore, I just cry Inside :{{[[[[[ help
Thank god my books are in a place that is far away form any beverage and have only to worry about Cockroaches or maybe an ocasional Rat..... (I wish I had an actual bookshelf, or space to put a bookshelf.) OH NOT HE BENT THE PAGE, I hate bent pages, they give me so much affliction.
My classmate back in the days borrowed from me my favorite 101 Dalmatinian book (that was in 90s so those books were extra cool in those years) and never returned it back to me! The worst thing is that she said she would, also I was too shy to ask it back from her.
