Sergei Bunyachenko was born to a poor peasant family of Ukrainian origin on 5 October 1902 in the village of Korovyakovka, then part of the Russian Empire. From 1932 to 1935, Bunyachenko studied at the Frunze Military Academy in Moscow, one of the Soviet Union's most prestigious military schools. However, in 1937, Bunyachenko was almost expelled from the Communist Party for criticizing agricultural collectivization policies conducted by the Soviet Union, especially in Ukraine. The collectivization efforts led to the forced consolidation of individual peasant farms into large, state-controlled enterprises. This policy caused widespread disruption to traditional farming practices, leading to a significant drop in agricultural productivity. The most devastating result was the Holodomor, a man-made famine from 1932 to 1933, which resulted in the deaths of millions of Ukrainians. Bunyachenko's criticism stemmed from witnessing these severe hardships, including starvation, loss of property, and the suppression of Ukrainian cultural and religious practices.
Although Bunyachenko initially faced expulsion from the Communist Party for his criticism of agricultural collectivization, in the end, he avoided it and received a strong warning instead. In 1938, Bunyachenko was appointed the assistant chief of staff of the 39th Rifle Corps, and fought at the Battle of Lake Khasan, which was a military conflict between the Soviet Union and Japan over a disputed border area near Lake Khasan on the Soviet-Manchurian border. The Second World War started on 1 September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. Poland found itself fighting a two front war when it was invaded by the Soviet Union from the east on 17 September. Warsaw officially surrendered to the Germans on 28 September and one day later in accordance with the secret protocol to their non-aggression pact, Germany, and the Soviet Union partitioned Poland.

@@bftdr STFU! Do your homework. Did you know that Russia invaded eastern poland at the same time that Germany invaded poland from the west? Did you know that their so called nonaggression pact, was really an alliance? Best believe that if Hitler was high and decided to launch Barbarossa, the allies wouldve had to fight both Germany and Russia in Europe. So yes, Im also a both sider. Fascism and Communism are the same thing. Dictatorship is bad. Doesnt matter who you follow. Marx or Mussolini.

I think fighting for Stalin as a German or Fighting for Hitler as a Soviet citizen is really the same. But fighting for Hitler as a German was better than fighting for Stalin as a USSR person. Because once captured, you would be sent to Siberia and killed as a potential traitor (that's what he really did to russian POWs).

Well, one thing is for certain when it comes to the Russians. Being found guilty for one’s “sins” against the motherland is always swift and a forgone conclusion. Carrying out the judgment of the court is long and painful.

The profile picture shows a man of a certain type who is unconventionally handsome. He tried to remain humane in an inhumane era. His demise was a result of gambling but he had nothing to lose except his life. He had the gift of desperation and was caught in a Catch 22 situation; damned if he stayed as a POW and damned if he joined the Nazis. I believe that’s called the Damocles Sword. In war there are no winners, just victims.
