Living in the Lower Omo Valley, this area has undergone a lot of pressure over the years.
In this video we cover ourselves in a bit of cow dung and scars. We dive deep into Mursi culture and talk about rites of passage, the ethics of lip plates, arranged marriage, and whether this is the most dangerous tribe in the Africa

It’s crazy how much the society we grow up in affects our perception of beauty. For example, I simply cannot fathom how anyone could find those lip plates attractive, but what many fail to realize, the Mursi also couldn’t fathom someone NOT thinking lip plates are attractive. This is such a clear proof of the fact that there is no such thing as objective beauty. Take those lip plates to any other society on earth and they would think that they not only look ugly, but downright disgusting. Yet this small culture has adopted this as a standard of beauty. Very interesting.
@AccidentallyOnPurpose
@AccidentallyOnPurpose 11 месяцев назад
Yes, I mean, of course we do have some form of individual choice, but what we find attractive is highly influenced by our culture, and those views instilled in us as a child are impossible to break a lot of the time. Like taste for example, how everybody says something is an acquired taste, being taught to eat certain things because of culture makes them taste good, whereas in another culture they taste bad. Our sense of smell is affected too by it. The west is taught that cow's blood is gross and tastes bad, therefore you anticipate it tasting bad, so it does. In other cultures cow's blood is good, therefore it tastes good to them. It's so fascinating.

I'm studying to become an archivist. What you have done here is another form of archive work. It's so important that you did this in a respectful way, when it comes to deeper tribes like this what we have is extremely outdated colonialist writings. You're correcting that. You're showing how it truly is. Thank you
@ikawba00
@ikawba00 7 месяцев назад
The outdated colonialists forgot their own origins and chose to bias the books about tribal life. History should always be unbiased, and honest as possible. I'm glad that people these days are becoming more appreciative of the remaining active tribes. We are better than the colonialists ever were.

Do you think they themselves want to live that way? Guaranteed you bring that one woman on a plane to America and she wouldn't move back to Africa if you paid her to. Nobody wants to live like this, this is just all they know. That they even are starting to own phones and dress in clothing atypical to their culture shows they want different. It's insane how you Westerners are so arrogantly out of touch with humanity. You actually think someone wants to be lion food and living day to day hoping to eat enough. This is crazy.

Even though I have an extremely weak stomach, and wouldn't be able to do this (I already have afew scars from darker parts of my life, and Ill say that hurts alot), but I don't see the harm in this.. there's alot more dangerous shit people can do ( *cough cough* drink and drive *cough cough* ), and they don't do anything about that. Why is scarification and other traditions "worse"?
@EmberFlames_Jag
@EmberFlames_Jag Год назад
No one should have scars put on them cause you can't get rid of it. Unless it's consentual I guess. Keep it away from children and don't pressure adults into it. Tattoos can get removed (usually) but scars I don't think can... Although after seeing part of the video I will say it looks better than I thought and it does look cool. I can understand if children get them they likely wouldn't leave the tribe anyway. Just as long as it's not abusive

As a retired professional tattoo artist for 20 years in the United States. I must say I am truly jealous of your experience with traditional scarification. I see them as amazing people, as they also should be able to protect their livelihood just as any other person without being considered to be violent for protecting themselves and their way of life from thieves stealing their cattle. The violence is at the hands of the thieves who steal their cattle. Whereas they have every right to protect their children and the cattle they raise that enables them to raise their children in the amazing culture their ancestors shared with them as they will also share with their children’s children. That is what has been lost in the western world cultural importance is now lesser then having a iPhone or some other latest gadget and that to me is sad. Thank you sir for videoing your adventures and giving your audience the perspective of these customs and historic cultural values that a lot of these tribes are still living today. I rather throw away the cell phone and money and live in a cave which is not far away from my current way of life now living in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado at 9000ft off the grid with the only video or tv I watch being documentaries in likeness of the ones that you are producing and that are of historical truth. Which is why the value of tribes like the ones that you allow others to see are far richer than most people living in the world today as most people know not their history let alone still value it enough to protect that way of life and to me that is far more important than any amount of money one could ever make and pass down as inheritance. The biggest thing is when the world has become once again as it has in its lifespan destroying the technology that those ancestors had but it was the tribes that were able to continue life. Most people do not currently know how to start a fire and it was said a year ago that 70% of society would die off without electricity in the United States and that is extremely said but good thing to have all that money saved. Once a person is able to cut the rope from the machine and then is able to truly live life as we humans were supposed to live it is only then that a true appreciation for life takes place otherwise it is appreciated for the technology and gadgets a person has not the sunshine, sunrise, sunset. Or the rain when their food depends upon it growing from the rain and not from a grocery store.

You're so right about travel being a right of passage, I was homeless at 13 so I was raised by alcoholics,junkies,prisoners,bikers on my travels as a kid all of them took me under their wing. Some treated me well some didn't but none forgotten, it's like an actual cartoon but out the other side of that came a man with moral convictions, compassion, ideals. When I tell people my story it sounds like the origins of a supervillain but I disarm people by being nice and chill everybody gets a firm handshake (it's my one prejudice I can't stand limp handshakes they annoy me but thats absolutely from growing up surrounded by psychotic alpha males haha) I can't physically walk anymore due to health so I live vicariously through videos such as this to see the world soothes my gypsy spirit so I thank you.

do you guys not think that we think so because we have been raised in individualistic societies? for us, the unit of morality is the individual. here, maybe they think in larger terms, maybe the individual doesn't have much of a say in what goes on? isn't this us projecting our own sense of morality onto these people? how is this any different from colonists thinking that cultures where sex was not tied to marriage deserved to be exterminated? I am always questioning my sense of morality and this just completely threw everything out of the window, so I decided to ask you guys aswell.

Your storytelling helps to bring out the humanity in so many neglected cultures. You are respectful, nonjudgmental, and open. Since you are exploring the world through this attitude, we feel that same energy reflected back. We're immersed in your close intimate filming style. While other documentaries pretend to be objective and detached, your videos feel so personal. The people in your video may come from far away continents. They may have grown up with different backgrounds and cultural practices, but at the root, we are all so similar. We all want the warmth of acceptance, family, food, shelter, laughter, and intimacy.
