I have worked in ERs for over 30 years. There was a time that the Drs were handing out oxys like it was candy. Drug companies sales reps would leave free samples and/or cater meals to the er for the docs so they would write more scripts. Drug seekers would come in with "back pain" and get scripts consistently. Some were addicts but some were getting rich by reselling them. Then the FDA came down on the hospitals and you are lucky if you get Tylenol now, so the drug seekers now just go find a heroin dealer. We can thank our for profit healthcare system for a huge percentage of Americas drug problem.

I'm a 63-year-old nurse working at a large urban hospital in the US Midwest for the last 30 years and can tell you that the US healthcare industrial complex is ALL about the money and it will never change until we take the profit incentives OUT of the system!

I was prescribed oxycodone after a hip surgery. I read the side effects on the 3rd day and went off it. For 10 days I was sicker detoxing than when I had Covid19. So, I’ve told my healthcare provider I’m allergic and never want it prescribed again. I’ve used Hydrocodone off and on for years after surgeries and the only side effect I had was constipation. I’ve told my family in case of an emergency because I don’t trust doctors when it comes to pain management. Doctors often dismiss what a senior says or wants, so I am emphatic.

As a recovering oxycontin and fentanyl user, now 9 plus years clean. I can tell you it was a chronic pain nightmare that only got worse when without or early renewal. Legally prescribed, it changes you for the worse. When you have the flue of the worse. Lonely withdrawal called dope sick 1000 times worse than flue .

Doctors know oxycontin is addictive and what irks me is that they prescribe it so readily as if it is the only thing that will help with pain. Doctors who prescribe it should also be held accountable!

Excellent series.! I do suggest people watch it and try to understand how most addicts got their start. The Sacklers should be forced to open state of the art rehab clinics to help these addicts. The state governments do not do anything to help addicts. They have a 7 day program and in my state if the patient wants to go further in the rehab journey its up to them to seek a facility to go to. There aren't many beds out there. Even if they go before a judge and said judge orders a rehab program the court does not provide one. It's up to the individual to find one themselves. I am a mother who has walked this path so have first hand experience.

Now you can't even get a ibuprofen without the hospital thinking you are drug seeking to get high. Patients are going without proper pain management because Doctors and Big Pharma was out of control. Also being a Black women and being seen as 'strong'..never gave me anything hard, even after surgery. The lovely mix of mismanagement and racism. Yay! 🇺🇸

I was prescribed it yrs. ago to control pain after minor surgery and had no problem with it, but now my dr.'s office is forced to post signs saying they don't prescribe for pain and that there are no pain meds on the premises (to discourage theft, I suppose) and that if you want help with pain you need to find a "pain management group." As if they're trying to tell us it's all in our heads. Sometimes we need something stronger than aspirin.

You can thank Rudy Colludy for protecting the Sackler Family. He was one of Purdue Corps Defence Attorneys, knowing designers of the OxyContin Opioid epidemic, in 2019 Giuliani convinced political appointees at the Department of Justice to reject career prosecutors' recommendations in the opioid marketing case. As a result, the company entered a guilty plea to “misbranding” OxyContin! What a disgusting legacy he leaves. I thought he couldn’t go any lower than being a Trump cohort but boy Rudy Colludy really is the scraping of the barrel.
