You don’t need to be able to draw well to paint a convincing watercolor landscape of a forest scene in autumn. Follow my video instructions and find out how easy Ron Ranson made it when he was teaching his Fast and Loose technique.

I just finished it it was so easy! Previously I have done painting tutorials in the Ron Ranson style and a great amount of it was wet in wet, which I found very stressful. This was relaxing! I forgot how much pigment the natural hair brushes soaked up,! I will mix more ahead next time.

Sounds great! So glad you enjoyed it. I've noticed a few other people doing tutorials "in the style of Ron Ranson" and using a vast amount of water. I don't remember him doing that at all. He used very free washes, but he wasn't about flooding the paper with water. He was more about using a large brush to free up any tendency to tightness. And because he used a LOT of paint he only used Cotman tubes (Winsor and Newton Student Quality) which he swore was good enough for him, and he only used Bockingford paper (excellent cellulose paper made in England).

I was watching one of your videos last night, it finished and another started. This guy is technically incredible, his shades of colour where incredibly complex, I watched, spell bound BUT after a 4/5 hrs video, his work was lifeless, tight and uninteresting. Then we have you, fluid, loose and random. Your work is full of life, expression and movement. Isn't it interesting. Xx live your whimsical loose work xxxx

Oh, Diane! I have to tell you, I felt sheer joy watching you paint this. I have never felt this while watching anyone paint. I don't know why, but I did! Almost to the point of tears. I love being in the woods, and I love fall colors (It's colorful here now in New Hampshire). I wish you could SMELL what fall smells like here. This painting touched me for real.

That’s so wonderfully touching to hear Renée. I’m so happy that the painting connected with you so deeply. I wonder whether Ron was guiding me as I painted it? I was surprised at how easily it came together - as if a higher power was working there. Lucky you to have such a fall - we used to have that in England but here in france it’s not the same. I have to use my memories! Blessings to you ❤️

This is real autumn. I like it very much! What do you use to scratch into the paint? I hope you know what I mean.
@DianeAntoneStudio
@DianeAntoneStudio 2 года назад
Hi Annemieke, thanks so much! I use a cut in half plastic card to do the scratching. In this case an IKEA family card!

Thanks for your answer, well, I have a lot of these cards, in fact also a family Ikea card 😂 In In the video I couldn’t see what it was.

I especially love the trees made with scratching and then the rigger brush addition. I am looking forward to giving this a go! Do all the Hake brushes bend like that? I know you mentioned yours is old and needs replacing. Such control with the brush...love it.

Thanks Denise! Thinking about paper again, interestingly, Ron got all his super effects using a relatively cheap paper - he swore by Bockingford, which he bought in large size pads, and he only ever used Cotman colors! My hake is a bit pathetic really as the hairs are half the length they should be. I've ordered myself a new one, but this old one will always be good for the dry-brush technique I use for leaves and undergrowth. I don't know what the new versions are like, I'll demonstrate it once mine arrives.

@@DianeAntoneStudio Looking forward to that...what brand did you order? I'd like to check them out. Also Bockingford. But don't you think all paper has probably changed over the years?

Beautiful. Going to have to get a Hake brush now even though I have no idea how to use it but hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained, right? 😊

Hi Diane, loved this and gave it a try, so much fun that I’m going to try it again! Can you clarify if this is wet in dry ?

@DianeAntoneStudio 2 года назад
Yes, I started with a loose wash on dry paper, and then painted the rest into the paper while it was still damp. Hope this helps, glad you enjoyed it!

Love this and want to try it myself. Do you know if Ron's book is still available? I especially love this loose landscape style. Thank you.
@DianeAntoneStudio
@DianeAntoneStudio 2 года назад
Yes, it is! He wrote several good books, and you can get them from Abe Books worldwide. I've just bought two more - "Watercolour Painting: The Ron Ranson Technique" (which I recommend as a starting point - I used to have it but lost it in a move a while back) and "Watercolour Fast and Loose" which is iconic! I already have "Big Brush Watercolour" and "Watercolours" All are still available secondhand at very low prices. I find Abe Books is an excellent place to get books from. Either abebooks.com or abebooks.co.uk depending on where you live!

Diane, no matter what you paint and what technique you use, you succeed in every picture. Another in the long list of expressions (as seen by you) and impressions (as seen by me). I can no longer say which of your paintings are my favourites, because it is impossible to choose one beautiful painting over another. I would like to ask you something. You have already copied other artists in your very own style (I only say: field of poppies). Would that also be possible, for example, with pictures by Vladimir Kush?

Could this be any more drab Diane? What is up with all the dull colors lately, I don't understand. Very uninteresting, I choose not to see the dullness in nature, no matter the season.

I'm beginning to wonder whether you've got your screen set to muted colors ha ha! To me this looks perfectly normal autumn colors Mary. I do try to offer a variety of moods, but in nature not everything is bright and shiny. I hope you stick with the channel nevertheless, as next week I have cardinals and other cheery subjects planned.
