In this video I paint autumn leaves on cold pressed papers to compare them and decide which I like the best. They are all 140# cold pressed papers - Stonehenge Aqua, Strathmore 500, and Fabriano Artistico.

Thanks for the reviews. I think something that will definitely play a role into the vibrancy of the paint is the color or tone of the paper. From what I can see in the video( as I dont own any of these papers) it seems as if the stonehedge is more of a white paper then the strathmore is next and then the fabriano seems more of an off white, but I could be wro3. I do appreciate your thorough review and honest opinion this has helped me in looking for a paper that will work best for me. Thanks. Have a great night!

Hello Sandra, I just found your channel today. I am enjoying the way you show your processes of comparing papers and picking colors and palettes. Thank you for showing them side by side.

And the Stonehenge paper is vegan, which is important to me and lots of others!

If you like paint that flows you must try Qor if you haven't already. It's magical. I can't wait to try Stonehenge because of all the raves. I find Strathmore 500 can't stand much scrubbing or overworking because it pills. I use it for making cards and things that are not what I consider "special." Haven't tried Fabriano yet but will some day. Thanks for this. I love reviews and I agree that paper is more important than anything else in watercolor painting.

Hi Susan Hamilton. What is Qor? I haven't heard of that brand.

Qor has a different binder than all other paints. It is the binder used for art restoration. It allows the paint to flow like crazy.

Thank you so much for this as I'm shopping. My preferences so far in paper are Strathmore 500 but I've only used the post cards and the back side of Strathmore 400. I bought a block of Arches and I've never been so disappointed in a paper as I am that. It soaks up pigment like a sponge and the color shift is.. well... I couldn't believe my eyes ... lifeless and dull. In fairness, I read at Wet Canvas that that's a problem only in the blocks but I'm not going to invest in a pag just to check it out. I'll give a bit of Stonehenge a try. I wish they would all say what the sizing is on descriptions as the reason I like the back of S400 is because its sized so much. I like my pigments to move around and lay on top. Thanks again.

Hi Pat. I'm glad you found this comparison useful. I hope to help others avoid the disappointment, frustration and self doubt that I experienced due (I now know) to using Arches. Yes, I know exactly what you are talking about - lifeless and dull, and I have not noticed any difference between blocks and sheets. However, I have used papers that perform worse than Arches too. I do hope you try some Stonehenge Aqua. Very nice paper indeed! Thanks for watching and for your comment. Sandy

Thank you Sandra. I'm curious... have you tried any lifting on Stonehenge?

So, then, what is your opinion regarding Stonehenge versus Arches? Which one do you prefer now that you have used both of them?

Hello Rita, I have used Arches almost from the time I started watercolor painting, and it has only been lately - since making the watercolor paint comparison video, then subsequent videos spurred on by that one, that I really started to question Arches. Take a look at my video where I discussed papers that I had painted orchids on. After that video, Arches and I pretty much broke up. I still have some Arches paper around, so I will use it up, but I much prefer Stonehenge Aqua, and also Strathmore 500 for my cold pressed papers. I have not chosen a hot press yet. Thanks for watching, and thanks for your comment! Sandy

Sandra J Schultz I watched your other video. I just recently tried the Arches for the first time and really liked it. I guess further tests are in order for me also!
