Brian Jones - rhythm guitar - Paint It Black.
Brian's sitar contribution to Paint It Black gets all of the attention, but his acoustic rhythm guitar part shows his ability to shift rhythmically in interesting ways and is a key ingredient to the song and recordings.
Above is a demonstration of the rhythm guitar part. The part can sound and feel quite disconcerting out of context. This is due to the fact the verse chords are played on the off beats which without any other rhythmic or melodic reference blurs where the first beat of each bar is. To put it another way if you were to count like so, 1&2&3&4& for each bar, Brian is playing chords on the &'s. As you will see and hear, this changes to playing on the beat when he moves to each chorus with brief returns to playing off beats within each chorus.
Note, it's possible if not likely, that Brian played chords in different positions. The main purpose of this demonstration is to highlight his changes in rhythm from playing off the beat to on the beat and back again, then into bolero type rhythms. When they played the song live, Brian played much the same rhythmic part, albeit in a different key.
