Clyfford Still is an American abstract painter and one of the abstract expressionists. He developed his own unique style of painting and in this video I explain how I look at his art and how you can paint like Clyfford Still yourself. It is interesting to paint like an artist because you have to look closely was the artist does, but also you will meet your challenges along the way. Clyfford Still is one of the famous American painters of the 20th century. His artwork can be found in the Clyfford Still museum in Denver, Colorado.

I usually think of colors like what would make a perfect combination, then let thy brush guide me through and think what I could create out of my spontaneity . Most of the time Im happy with the results because I used my freedom to create what I want. Right now, Im drawn to fauvism because of my expression through vivid colors. Thanks to your videos, so helpful and inspiring.

Hi Maria, thanks. It is so interesting to hear you all talk about how you paint. There are many options and reasons to paint. Nice to hear you are happy with your results. Albert

Thank you from the heart Albert. I very much enjoyed the lesson and the insights that you provided not only about Clyfford Still but also about the stories that abstract art tends to reveal. I am for one believe in the power of abstract to convey emotions evocative of introspection. I took a course once on abstract art. One of the assignments involved painting in the style of Barnett Newman (his Zip paintings). It was a time when I was feeling exceptionally down and revolted at life (which I always am). I wanted to covey my feelings in a zip painting and I managed to. My classmates as well my instructor saw in it (to varying degrees) what was going on my mind. Until now (three years later) I become emotional and might even cry when I look at it. To answer another question of yours, I tend to start without plan (in fact if I dreamt a plan, i would keep in my back-pocket as Plan B). Plan A... is to start with a random bold stroke of black paint letting it drive the painting. Depending on the then-prevailing mood colors will vary in intensity, brightness and relationships. Generally, I emerge satisfied with what I did even if the message/mood conveyed is unpleasant. Again, thank you for offering the insights that you generally do. Have a good day and stay safe.

Hi Salim, thanks, also from the heart. Yes, emotion or feelings in (abstract) art, or at least making it personal. I love it. It gives so much extra depth. I can relate to your story, I too have my darker periods. Making art can help me. Thanks for sharing your way of working when painting. I would love to see you works ones, impossible but still. Keep painting, bye, Albert

I’m working on abstract collages right now. I don’t think of stories. Instead I find myself constantly thinking about balance - balance between shape, color, lines and any representational elements I might add. I just realized how that might be my story. I’m constantly striving for balance in my life. The satisfied or dissatisfied feelings I experience in my life are similar to feelings I experience when I build my work.

Hi Sharon, thanks for sharing. I understand what you mean. What you encounter in life you try to solve in your artwork. I believe that when you can live it, you can paint/collage/dance/sing (any art) it. And vice versa. When you understand or learned the process you are ready for you next assignment 😁👍 That's why it is interesting to look back at the end of the year or any period at your artwork. You see what you learned (in life). Would love to see your artwork. Bye, Albert

Thank you for sharing your process of creating in Clyfford Still’s style. As I explore abstract painting and search for my own style, seeing your work inspired by his approach really sparks my imagination. I’m still figuring out what my unique style will be, but I hope to one day tell stories through my paintings that resonate with others and ignite their creativity. P.S. I’m planning to visit the Clyfford Still Museum on my next trip to Denver.

Thanks, Swiss. Just know whatever you paint is, in my opinion, always 'you' even when working in someone else's style. Look at cubism, they all resemble or relate, but all are unique. Just in other styles. Forget your goal, just paint and have fun. Before you know it you'll be there. Perhaps you have arrives already. Enjoy visiting Denver. Happy painting, Albert.

Thanks again for this great video! When I paint abstract I don’t know where it will take me. I just want to express my energy, what I cannot see or translate into words. I want to emerge and express the invisible. I start from the bottom left and move to the right. I am always sorry I didn’t plan the background 😱when the work is done. Thank you for guiding me to reflect on how I paint.

Hi Franca, love to hear how you paint. It's personal but thinking about it can also help. It's one aspect of painting, just as composition or color. What do you mean by 'the invisible'? If you don't mind me asking? Would love to hear. Bye, Albert

Imperfect Paintings There is a great part of us under the surface, just like an iceberg. Our mind is not always known to us. Often we feel something but we don’t know what it is, how to put it into words or images. How do you express that? A gesture, a color, a sound, produced with the intention to see what it manifests.... that is how the invisible comes to our senses.
@ImperfectPaintings
@ImperfectPaintings 4 года назад
Hi Franca, yes exactly. That invisible but absolutely present part of us. Invaluable to me. And so interesting, often useless at work and at the same time helpful at work too. I rely on it very often. But what color it has? How it looks? No words, no images, just feelings or presence. Thanks. Bye, Albert

I did not know Clyfford Still had a museum in Denver. I have a sister up that way and the next time I go for a visit I'll have to stop in there. Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico also have several art galleries. It makes for a good art trip. Your question of the day is hard to answer because I'm not totally thinking of my method of painting when I'm doing it. I might do it differently each time depending on what I'm doing. I do like to paint an under painting quite a bit, and paint over that. It gives it a different texture and dimension. I saw a very interesting 2-part documentary on Andy Warhol last night. Check it out if you enjoy him: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UQXpqQO4vaE.html Thanks Albert.

Hi Culture Fan, thanks. Questions can also be interesting when the answer is like yours. Painting is often a personal process and it's nice when you, or anyone, found a way that works. Other people start with walking the dog, enjoying the wind in your hear and perhaps get inspiration from something they see. Thanks for the link to Warhol, interesting guy. Bye, Albert

I really love your lessons! I’m in a “stump” right now and it’s very much depressing me because I just want to relax, escape, and paint...but I’m just not feeling it. So I turned to RU-vid in hopes to inspire me 👩‍🎨 And now, I’ve watched about 20 of your videos 😂 I love that you share information about the artists. I’m learning so much from you! Now...how can I get back my painting flow?!
@ImperfectPaintings
@ImperfectPaintings 4 года назад
Hi Deborah, thanks for commenting. Sorry to hear you lost your flow. Perhaps take a look at what brought you joy in painting before. Was it being creative, or playing with color? Perhaps you worked with different materials? Or just forget your idea about being blocked and do this funny exercise: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VTSV2anz08A.html Or play like a kid, like in this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VTSV2anz08A.html Or start finger painting on little 10x10 cm pieces of paper. Just cut out 20 of them and start. Listen to your reactions: too dark? Switch to a lighter color. Too full - make a more empty one. You can even arrange them together on a piece paper afterwards and put it on your wall. Tip for the day, just start and paint your problems away. Or accept my invitation to paint, sometimes a challenge can also help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-joV5r4KG0GM.html Hope this helps to get you on your way. Can you let me know? You have asked a very good question. I am just putting paint on canvas while painting abstract. di dont understand abstract much. can you really help me?
@ImperfectPaintings
@ImperfectPaintings 2 года назад
Hi Shirazy, you can make a realistic painting of a landscape almost looking like a photograph or a less realistic one, a more abstract one. When you make it even more abstract you can end up with a painting that doesn't look like the landscape anymore. When you don't look at the landscape and make a painting, it can still look like a landscape. In complete abstract paintings you don’t see the landscape anymore and in that case you have to learn to look at such a painting. In what way can you still like the painting (lines, colors, brushstrokes, overall impression and so on. But most of all did you like making it. If not, why not. Can you change it in a way you will like it and so on. I especially like this way of process oriented painting of learning to learn to appreciate what you make. Hope this helps a bit. Albert
