Yeah I agree, you need some sheen on the interior walls. Satin or Eggshell. I use eggshell for all my interior walls, even bathrooms and kitchen. Semigloss for interior trim / doors. Eggshell also has enough durability that it can be cleaned, but doesn't look shiny. It also is low enough sheen that spot touch-ups can be done without having to re-paint the whole wall (it doesn't have so much sheen that it requires a wet edge)
@@lizzieh.8197 ultra flat is good for ceilings as it hides the imperfections. Go for branded “ceiling paint” versus the stuff for walls. www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/interior-exterior-paints-stains/product-catalog/bmwcp/waterborne-ceiling-paint
I painted my walls with a Pearl Finish and will be staining my trim in a deeper wood. I wanted the durability and love how the colour reflects and even changes in my walls.
Hello! Thanks for the info. We're still torn about what finish to use on all our walls. Would you suggest eggshell for all interior walls or should we choose different sheens depending on the room? Haha hopefully that makes sense, thanks in advance!
Damn.. I really needed all types of painting advice back in 2018 when I was trying to select paint colors for my living room/dining area. I went with something that really didn't suit me after I got it onto the walls, but it wasn't so bad, like, I wanted to repaint right away lol it sufficed. I live in the bay area of Cali... My house is a 3 bedroom, 1 bath, huge 21x40 garage and sits on a cement slab built in early the 50's, not the original garage, added on, but the rooms in the house are small. All 3 bedrooms get natural lighting and I am searching for colors and your vids have been, SO helpful. I started painting when I was 12, painted my own bedroom, often, but thanks for going into detail.
That is a great guide, thank you. I need to repaint all the doors and trim in my new house and update the walls. I'd assumed I'd go gloss or semi-gloss for the doors/trim since that what we always did back in the day but the "skip-1" rule will work perfectly for me to achieve a more contemporary look while getting a combo I like.
Paint People: My Benjamin Moore store recommended semi-gloss Scuff-x for the trim/doors, which is what I did. Two BM stores recommended the Scuff-x over ANY other paint they sold (i.e. Aura, Regal, etc). The trim turned out great btw. But I read on some painter's chatboard that Scuff-X sheen is one higher than normal, so Sucuff-x Eggshell is really Satin, etc. I live on a hill where house has many windows and constant California light [East (main), South (side), West (main)]. The walls have texture, so what BM model would you use and what sheen?....
Excellent man! I came across your channel yesterday and I’ve been binge watching!!! Thanks for the content and the fun videos. It also helps that you are easy on the eyes. 😉 👍🏽
thanks for the helpful content you put out on your channel. I have 2 questions: 1. when choosing paint finish, what finish should be used on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities or doors. If we are using Eggshell on the walls, would we use semi gloss on the cabinets and doors as well as the base boards? 2. We have molding on the walls, we are going to paint them the same color. It was suggested we use different finishes. So here, if we use Eggshell for the wall, should we use semi gloss on the trim on the wall (that we are painting the same color)?
Plan on using Decorators White for floors and trim. Could i also use it on the ceiling? I’d use, flat, eggshell, and semi gloss. Accent wall in master, SW Navy, also on beadbaord under chair rail in kitchen, hood over stove, under chair rail in dining room and living room. I’ve learned tons, thank you.
Wish you had mentioned difference between Satin and Eggshell. That one is debated. I feel they are pretty much interchangeable with Satin having a touch more shine...depending on the brand of paint.
What are your thoughts on high gloss for painting the railing of an old oak stair case? Also recommendations for semi-gloss versus satin finish in bathrooms/kitchen?
I would use semi-gloss on the stair railing and for bathroom walls eggshell. I have used semi-gloss for bathroom walls in the past for durability, but it is just too glossy looking.
I always used semigloss on our walls, because we have a daycare and they touch the walls constantly. I always considered the semigloss easier to clean. With vaulted ceilings and tall walls, repainting the whole thing for a 3 foot section on the bottom seems like a bad move.
I’m finding your videos very helpful. As a new homeowner I didn’t know there was so much more to painting. With that being said, I want to paint my bathroom ceilings. Should I use a semi gloss or satin?
Either is good. Depends on your preference. For ceilings, bathrooms tend to be moist places, and flat or matte paint will begin to grow mold or mildew much faster than other paint sheens, so I'd still go satin on the ceilings too.
Hi, thanks for the video. I'm closing on a home which doesn't have as much light coming through because of windows location. We're flipping the house from floor to ceiling. What sheen would you recommend for walls(light gray), new baseboards(white), new doors/window trims (white), new cabinets(bottom half navy bluish, top half white), new room doors (white) and new closet doors (white). Yes we're gonna paint all of these mentioned above. We're gonna use an airless paint sprayer. Thanks!
Traditionally, eggshell on the walls was used most often because of its durability, but I might recommend it because it helps reflect light a bit, providing some texture. As for the cabinets, I really enjoy satin. Doors and frames, semi-gloss, so you have enough of a Sheen difference between the walls and trim. Hope this helps!
I have wood tongue and groove peaked ceilings. They have aged in a warm tone. its been 28 years. I want a white on my walls, and am leaning towards a swiss coffee BM. what do you think?
I just bought BM Soft Chamois today in Pearl for my hallway and family room. It really looks shiny and you can see all the roller marks. I live in a 1960s ranch home with a lot of flaws on the walls. What sheen would you suggest?
Thanks for the breakdown! - what finish would you suggest for repainting Ikea melamine furniture? I plan to prime with the ZINSSER BIN Shellac Primer, but am unsure about what paint to use overtop. And what base would you recommend (water based, oil based). The shelves would be painted white and will not endure lots of movement but may get wet from watering the plants. Thanks so much for your guidance!
Question - what finish would I use on custom built cabinetry in my kitchen? Say... dark wood-look floors, white marbled-look countertops, white-patterned backsplash, and... you’re super close to selling me on - Benjamin Moore’s Salamander for my cabinets?... and then gold hardware. I like drama, but do you recommend that color for the kitchen? So, 2 questions, I suppose. What color of deep green paint; & what finish would look best? I’m hoping for a Wow-look that’s not overwhelming (BM’s Hunter Green) as the focal point.
I want to paint my living room walls the same color they are now, but I don't know what color it is. How do I match it? I'm afraid to go with a different color because I might not like it. What should I do? Your videos are awesome by the way!.
We are moving into a new build...with a horrible paint job. We will repaint everything. Please recommend ceiling, wall, and trim finishes for the various rooms that you would think best? Thank you!
Ceilings? Flat! Walls and trim, I would default to Eggshell and semi-gloss respectively. Alternatively, you could use a washable matte (walls) and satin (trim) combination for something with less sheen.
I love watching all of your videos, they are super helpful. Will you ever do one for kitchens with a dark island and white cabinets? I’m using a white quartz with marble like veining, and I chose Decorators White and Soot. My flooring is maple hardwood. Do you have any suggestions for a wall, trim color, and sheen level for the cabinetry?
Thanks for the comment? It would honestly by tough for us to consult you without seeing it in person. Sheen-wise, I prefer a satin finish on the cabinets, but I've also seen people opt for glossier finishes as well. We'll be doing more videos about cabinet paints shortly, so stay tuned for that! :)
What would you recommend for an exterior house finish? Modern styled house, leaning towards low to no sheen, but not sure about durability. What is the standard?
Hello, I am going to paint my bedroom but I’m having a difficult time choosing which finish to pick. I am trying to decide between eggshell or matte. My room is upstairs and gets pretty hot up there sometimes would that effect the matte paint? I am going to use glidden premium paint from Home Depot. Also if I get a paint and primer in one will that make it were I don’t have to put primer separately on the walls? I’m gonna paint over wallpaper on drywall. Thanks alot!
Plan on painting our kitchen cabinets an Antique White using SW paint brand. The walls paint will be eggshell Repose Gray. What type of sheen should I use for the cabinet paint. No kids no dogs just the wife and I. I was leaning toward a sheen but don't generally like a shiny paint. What are your thoughts. Thanks
Enjoy your videos, Mississauga representing. What is the recommendation for crown? I have 8 foot ceilings and I am thinking of painting it a flat sheen as the ceiling to blend in vs the trim sheen of semi. Thoughts?
Great explanations, I was just wondering what is meant by "imperfections" is this something like being able to see streak marks from the roller? or maybe hides damages or something? I wasn't to sure what was meant by that. Thank you for the video.
Thank you! I painted my staircase all white in satin, but it looks a bit too flat for my liking, same as eggshell... Do you think I could leave risers and threads in satin, but add a 1 coat of semi gloss on balusters, spindles handrail? Or visually it will be a clash of finishes?
Questions: I was thinking about going with the classic grey for my walls and chantilly lace for the trim, thoughts? If I did go with this combo, should I paint my ceiling the same chantilly white? I mean, should you be matching trim and ceiling colors? Oh and one last question, I couldn’t find a primer video of yours so, what’s the best primer to use? Thank you very much, Tyler
Matching you trim colour with your ceiling is what I would recommend most often. Here is a link to our primer vid. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z7eeipVclyE.html
Hi! I have a 45ft long living room wall that receives a lot of natural light. The contractor is suggesting satin but I am very concern that it might be too shiny. Additionally, I need washable capabilities... what would you recommend? Thanks, awesome video!
Satin would very shiny indeed... My recommendations would be Eggshell, or a washable Matte like Aura or Regal Ulti-Matte. The matte finish will also hide wall imperfections a lot better!
I have built in shelving into the master closet on the left, center, and right sides. Shelving extends 92 inches in height. I'm ready to paint the walls and plywood shelving. The shelves will be used for clothes, purses, and shoes. What sheen do you recommend for a Benjamin Moore Creamy White?
Just painted our walls the matte finish, but the bedrooms in eggshell. Painting all of our trim right now and deciding between semi gloss and satin... was wanting to do them all the same :2
Hi Cristina, touchups almost never work unless you paint corner to corner rather than smaller spots in the middle of a wall. I normally say there is about a three month window of opportunity from the time you initially painted to the time it’s still OK to touchup. Walls get dirty, paint finishes fade, there’s just too many variables to factor in, and that’s not even taking proper, even application into account.
Hi, I'm painting an interior metal railing in black. The painter used satin on half of it, and it looks pretty shiny. My niece who works with an architect recommended flat, so i'm wondering if this would be OK, or to maybe go with eggshell. Either way, satin is too shiny.
Hi, I love matte on the walls and pearl for trim. Would it be strange to paint the top portion of a wall in matte and the wainscoting from the chair rail down in pearl?
Thanks for the great video. I am in the process of redoing an older oaky(is that a word) bookshelf. It has both shelves, drawers and cabinet doors. Have decided to use ADVANCE. My question is...the doors look like they where homemade and not made very well with lots of imperfections in them. What sheen should I use with the ADVANCE paint....Was thinking Pearl but.... Also since I have watched some of your videos on colors....I am thinking of doing the book shelf two tone with the back wall being black and then the rest white. Thought I would use Onyx and simply white but would love some of you wise advice. Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer!
The builder of my subdivision painted all the interior doors what I am assuming is high gloss. Way too much shine for my taste. I would like to have them all resprayed in another color of white and change the finish to Satin. I am going to assume that they would need to be primered first because of the high gloss.
Hello, I am a noob painter ready to get down and dirty with making these old walls in my house look brand new! I have a question for you; Do any of the glosses play a role in preventing mold in rooms, such as a bathroom or kitchen? I got semi-gloss for all the rooms to repaint - kitchen, bathroom, and an enclosed porch (has no insolation). I was told that I would want an exterior paint for the enclosed porch that I described, where they right? But I picked semi-gloss because I somehow got the idea that it's what you paint your walls with! But then what type of paint do I use for my trim??? Would you recommend a matte? Thank you in advance! :)
Hi Amber! The higher the sheen the more durable the paint, so people often use semi gloss for trim and doors as they are more prone to scuffs. People often use matte/flat for ceilings because it hide flaws but some people like the look of it on their walls. Really, it's all about what look you prefer. Exterior paint is recommended for outdoors because it's designed to withstand the elements more. Hope that helps!
Most pictures with tongue and groove ceilings look like they are maybe satin instead of flat. I can’t decide what to use. I have matte on the wall and satin on the trim of a north facing mudroom. What would you recommend? Thank you!
DO you follow this same rule if you're painting the walls and trim the same color. I'm considering using same finish, Satin, for the walls and the trim and I'm using the same color for both Vintage Pewter, it's part of the Behr line...equivalent to Sherwin Williams Revere Gray I believe. The ceilings will be white eggshell or matte finish.
Thank you for your question. I would use different finishes on the walls and trim, even when using the same color on both. If you really were looking for a consistent sheen on both, I might go the other way and find a very washable matte or eggshell to use on both. Satin walls would likely look far too shiny and enhance any imperfections that the walls may have. Hope this helps!
Hey man, stumbled upon your video and loved it. Thank you. Quick question, what would you recommend for walls/ ceilings of a garage? I was thinking Flat based on your video. But they also will be high traffic area where I plan to hang garden tools and such. Please help? Also if flat, any brands you can point me to? Cheers!!
Normally flat is sufficient. You could go with something like scuff-x if you want more durability, but nothing is really going to stand up to garden tools banging on the walls. Haha.
@@thepaintpeople thanks very helpful! I might just go with flat then. My contractor told me he will have to charge double to do eggshell vs flat, since he has to do one additional coating if we did eggshell. Not sure if that is true.
Hi! Love your videos. I want to paint my house inside and I want a neutral color my cabinets are white with black countertops and the backsplash are black, silver and silver crystal
Thanks for this; it's very helpful! Apologies in advance for my long question...I'm painting a very small room that has kind of odd lines at the ceiling. It's a little hard to describe, but it's partially under a staircase, there's a ceiling beam, and there are some weird soffits as well. So there's a bit of angled ceiling under the stairs, and then flat ceilings at four (!) different heights due to the beam and soffits. I'd like to make all the transitions between wall/ceiling recede as much as possible. My idea was to paint everything the same color. Question 1: is this a dumb idea? Question 2: can I help minimize the transitions by painting walls/ceilings the same sheen as well?
It's a tricky one, but if you can get away with, going with the same color will help out your situation. Go with something light, and if possible, maybe use a washable flat on both surfaces. That way you'll have a low sheen finish for the ceiling but still have some washability for the walls. The other option is get the flat finish of that color for the ceiling and eggshell for the walls, but keep it the same color. The little difference in sheen level shouldn't be too noticeable.
I want to do Simply White or White Cloud -High Gloss kitchen cabinets in a Farmhouse-style home. White Dove walls, and Chantilly Lace high gloss trim, your thoughts?
Thanks for the video. Very informative. I painted the interior walls with Regal Eggshell(Simply White) so for the doors and trim I'm thinking of going with the Semi-Gloss. For color, do people normally go with pure white for the trim, or do you recommend that I tint to match the Simply White on the walls?
Aside from using Aura bath paint, am I able to use a matte finish in a bathroom that doesn't get used often? or even one that will be used daily? thanks. I love your videos.
I have a question! I’m refining my kitchen with white cabinets. I want the cabinets and trim to be pure white. My ceilings “accidentally@ got painted extra white. Will this work out or should I fix it. Also, I was coining to use matte on my wall and semi gloss on my trim. Can I get away with this? My kitchen has paneling around the ear in kitchen area. I’m nervous about semi gloss on the cabinets and trim and paneling. With this be too much shine?
Super helpful, thank you! For painting cabinetry, is semi-gloss standard then? We want high durability without weirding out future buyers with a high-gloss look- thoughts??
Fantastic, simple to understand video ! I recently purchased a home, owned by an artist, who most definitely showed his love for his home in designing most, if not all, the details of the home. He took the time to pain the wood, some very expensive, other standard oak giving the home a wonderful look. My problem: Although completely designed with 20 foot shelves for the library, the final step which is to seal or rather finish the wood was not completed in many of the areas of the home. This has left many areas in the home with a roughness to the wood, as if the wood is thirsty. Please help.
thanks James for this. We are trying to paint an accent wall Aura Burnt Ember and use the same in the bathroom since the bathroom as gray cabinets and white quartz countertop. Should I use two different finishes of Aura or will Eggshell work for both Accent wall in Dining and the Bathroom (all walls)? Thanks !
Thanks for the information on paint finishes. Our house has that nasty sprayed on popcorn crap from the 1970s or 1980s. Do you have any paint recommendations for these ceilings? We painted some years ago, and it took a LOT of paint. I cannot spend the time or money to remove it. Your recommendations would be appreciated.
