Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I’ve been painting for about 35 years and I love your info because it ALWAYS helps to refresh basics!!! It’s so easy to get caught up in little things & the basics bring you back to being fresh in your painting!! Thanks so much ! Great content even for us old timers!! Btw, great haircut but looks great either way!

Your course is so great, I’m halfway through! In this video, the colours you put down are so dark and “messy” compared to what I’d put, yet it comes out so divinely and mine don’t. I’m so fascinated by your process and will keep pushing myself!

@@paintcoach Hi Chris, I watched one of your paint talk videos where you talked about varnishing, and you said to wait 6 months or more for the painting to dry completely. But if the painting is thin layered and dried in sunlight , do I still need to wait for 6 months or more ?

in my palet I use primaries, one warm and other cold, plus white & burn umber, of course if I need to paint lot of vegetation I add a couple of greens to. an orange to get all browns.

Interesting guidance and information. Great to know more about how glazing is important or not. I also assume that depending on your level of expertise you might or not use glazing as a resource. Thanks so much for all you do for your followers and giving us the right information based on your experience and what has worked for you is valuable information. We are all at different levels and this makes us to continue challenging ourselves to be better. Blessings and be safe.

I struggle with finding time to sit down in front of my canvas. Lately I haven't had the motivation to paint, do you have any tips for me? And do you have any tips on how to practice and get rid of that mind set that every time you go to paint that the painting itself has to be perfect?

Just do it. Carve out the time every day and force yourself even when you don't feel like it. I had the same problem with Food Exercise Cleaning up Reading Software Development Painting I never feel motivated. I thought about it for a bit what is stopping me/think is stopping me from completing my task. 1. Food: I thought healthy food was expensive and took too much time to prep and eat. The truth was that I loved eating junk food. My brain loved eating junk food. It was until I forced myself to eat the healthy food I realized that junk food and fast food tastes HORRIBLE!! I can't eat the stuff anymore. It's trash to me. Now I eat healthy. 2. Exercise: I thought that I didn't have the time to do the exercise or the tools. The truth was I had the time in the morning I was just sitting on the computer looking at random junk online and watching the news loop. That time could be used to exercise indoors. I bought resistance bands and that replaced a pull up bar and dumbells. I noticed always no matter how I feel the first 15 mintues my body is telling me "go sit down you not exercising today loser" Then after that hurdle my body then says "HELL YEAH WE CAN DO THIS !! LETS GO DO MORE!!!" Sometimes that feeling comes at the very end of the exercise XD. So I have embraced that I will hate exercising for the first 15 minutes. 3. Cleaning Up: I ALWAYS think I don't have time to clean up. This one is still a work in progress as others in the house also dirty it up and I get annoyed cleaning after them. I swear some of the people I live with are HOARDERS!! move one thing and you won't hear the end of it. I decided to clean up every weekend since nobody visits my house anyways lol. 4. Reading: This is the hardest thing to do for me. To sit down and see text.I tried to tell myself that various other tasks are taking up the time to justify me not reading. So I decided that every time I wake up my hand grabs the book right on the side of me and read it for as long as I can. Then I go exercise and eat. After that I get back to reading so that I can think about what I read and feel engaged and jump right back into it later in the day. Software Development: Truthfully painting solved this problem. I wanted to make the biggest most complex software ever. Then I realized that was impossible for one person to accomplish. I put this off for MONTHS !!! MONTHS!!! and then I started painting. It took me hours of time to finish a painting. I would watch hours YT videos of painters do their thing. The process of having to break down the painting into shapes and only use the essential parts gave me the idea on how to make the software simple but effective. I stopped worrying about making my software complicated and made a simple lightweight one that gave the software it's identity. Later I can go in and put in the extra details to finish off the software. Painting: Although I started painting, I also would not do so for months on end. I had no clue what to paint. Then I saw that I could just paint the people and locations on the news. So long as it doesn't become public lol. I had a reason to watch the news for an hour and get a screenshot of whatever to use. Sometimes it's a news anchor sometimes its a sunset, sometimes its a cloudy day. Sometimes it's a traffic jam, sometimes its a crash, sometimes its a natural disaster. It's all there to pick from. I don't care for the lighting, the feel, the whatever, I just paint it. The reason why I don't chose things that motivate me was because I shouldn't need it to start anything. The motivation comes during and after completing the task never at the start.

I’ve been painting for several months and I’m still confused about how medium relates to fat over lean. You said you normally go from paint thinner to linseed oil to straight paint. But isn’t linseed oil fatter than straight paint, and wouldn’t you layer the paint with linseed oil on top of the straight paint? Or do you just use paint thinner > linseed oil > straight paint because it’s alla prima and it doesn’t matter as much? Maybe I’m missing it, but I would appreciate it if you could clear this up for me!

I wish you were a watercolor or oil pastel painting coach!:) I’m enjoying watching your videos. I feel like each video has got a lot of tips I can very quickly apply, if only I were learning oil painting. Well, watching your videos is making me want to try oil painting, but I’ve already started learning oil pastels and watercolor. If you were me, would you pick up a new medium “just to try it out”, even if it meant investing in more materials?

Hi Chris, I recently discovered you on RU-vid and am a subscriber and a follower of you on Instagram. Your videos are sooo helpful! Watching this video, I noticed that your colors of the lemons are darker than the photograph and your "grey" background is much more blue. Can you explain why you chose to do that?
@thirdfrau4885
@thirdfrau4885 3 года назад
@Glum Sullen thanks for your reply. I do see that the completed painting behind him is more reflective of the picture. I also realize that an artist has license to tweak the colors and value to make the composition more appealing.

Great video. Can I ask a question about Liquin? I've got work where I used it in my last layers and its cracking really bad, is there a way of fixing that? Where has your hair gone? it was looking great! But then my husband has long hair so I am biased ;-)
@GustavoVillada
@GustavoVillada 3 года назад
I use lot of Liquin since help to dry faster and never I get a crack on my paints (I use Winsor & Newton, both Artists & Winton lines) I believe that you have a problem in the first layers that aren't dried and when those do it, crack the paint upper it. as Glum say, try to do some research in fat over lean or thin to thick (are sinonims)
