I bike down Valencia almost everyday, so I was delighted to see that someone was painting beautiful murals on the big green utility boxes that can be found on most corners.
I managed to catch up with Juan Manuel Carmona, one of the artists who worked on these murals, and asked him some questions. We talked about the three murals he worked on (on Valencia between 20th and 22nd streets), the inspiration behind the murals, and the organization that is sponsoring so many of these new murals in San Francisco.
We also talk about how some of these new murals, which feature drag performers and transgender people, have been targeted by vandals. Before I even had the chance to edit this interview, the mural at 22nd Street and Valencia had been completely vandalized.
