Don’t forget to check out the description to know when all these fruit trees will flower with my interactive foraging calendar! Have you ever found paw paw flowers before? What fruit tree flowers do you want to see covered next? One thing to add, when I say "distant tree" I generally mean trees that are more or less 20ft away from the ones you used to gather pollen, it doesn't need to be a completely different location!

I did just this with the wild trees in my forest and pollinated the two trees I’ve had in my backyard for 3 years with no fruit. I had no idea what i was doing and i just rubbed pollen in every flower i could reach. It was incredibly successful and I’ve got dozens of fruits on 2 small trees now! Can’t wait to try my very own yard-grown fruit

You're lucky you live in an area where Pawpaws grow wild. I don't, but around a decade ago I planted some on my property. A few years ago I finally got more than one flowering and I started to hand pollinate. Hand pollination works really well. My biggest tree is about 25' high I got almost 100 fruit off it last year and this year the fruit set seems to be over 200. I'm hoping it keeps them all. Higher than where I hand pollinated there are only a few fruit. So, it looks like you can increase your fruit yield between 10x and 100x with hand pollination. Definitely worth it. And oh my trees are directly next to each other, literally touching when leafed out.

Just learned about pawpaws this year. I want desperately to find one and try one. If I have land someday I would even love to try and cultivate two trees. Thanks for the info!

I'm excited to report that 2 of the flowers I hand pollinated are growing fruit! It COULD be coincidence, but since I didn't see any fruit on trees I didn't pollinate, I'd say this was very much worth it! Next year, I'll try to do more and also do a better job of marking which trees/flowers I do.

I’ve been hand pollinating my paw paws for years. If I didn’t, I might get a couple of fruits per season. I get hundreds from pollinating.

Dear Sir, Thank you for this most informative video on paw paws. It took you to educate me on hand pollinating. I even went to Kentucky State University on their "3rd Thursday Thing" where they educate the public on this magical fruit (I did learn a lot-Just not an exact procedure on hand pollination). Just found the channel via a wild invasive onion video. Subbed. I've been a lay forager for years and am always looking to improve. Northern and Eastern PA is my home territory yet I've found interesting things around the contiguous U.S. almost by accident. It's seems that studying a distant area for foraging tips almost makes it easier to spot fauna you may find interesting. Here at home I'm more apt to look over something I've been trying to spy.

Great video as always. Just wondering what usually pollinates this tree. If you remove all the pollen from all the flowers is there some other creature missing out that specifically needs it?

Awesome video, thanks for the info! I have always wondered why they have such a lack of fruit sometimes. Do you think the sharpie will go away though? Anytime I write with a sharpie on things (mostly plant tags) that go outside, it fades away within a couple weeks. I have since learned that they make "garden markers" for that reason. They're non-toxic and some are made from wax and others are made from something else, not sure what

What is the longevity of the pollen if collected in a bag and transferred to another space? Hours? Days? Does it even have a lifespan or is it "shelf stable" ?

With some plants I've seen weeks to months (if dried), but I don't know how widely that applies or how truthful it is. Great question! Let me know if you learn anything else about it.

I bought some land 4 years ago that has a pawpaw grove on it, but I've never found any fruit. After watching this video, I hand pollinated them with some pollen from trees at a state park. Assuming I was successful, how long does it usually take for fruit to start growing?

Can pawpaw survive in the Southwest? I assume that it would do quite poorly in the low desert's native concrete (we dont have real soil), but i wonder if it would manage alright at the higher elevations.

Watching saucy part of a trees reproductive cycle? Go all the way. Plant your seed. Then, like a child, nurture it to maturity. I have bred my own varieties of apple trees. And now my trees provide for me.

I saw a forum were these fruits could actaully be toxic.not sure i want to be on that end of experimetation,my area i know were a grove of these trees are in the wild woods.its on state game lands here in pa.near renova.someone said it makes a deliciuos ice cream mix dont know if true or not.think i will wait a few yrs on studys outcome.snookie pa.😊😊😊😊

People have been eating paw paw for a very long time, so it's not much of an experiment. I think if you were to eat ridiculous quantities of them, especially all year long, you might have a problem. But like most things, totally safe to eat the fresh fruit in moderation during the fruiting season. Apparently paw paw leather can cause nausea and vomiting, so skip that. Some people are allergic, so as with all new foods, always try a small amount and observe how you feel before eating very much.
