Do You have Phylliosis? I have the cure! In this video I discuss and demonstrate how to paint trees without painting every single leaf. I start with an alcohol wash and gradually build up layers of pastel. I show you how we can harness the power of suggestion to paint more expressive trees.

1. LuxArchival pastel paper
2. Nupastels hard pastels
3. Assorted soft pastels
4. 70% isopropyl alcohol and a brush
5. Black foam core support board with black artist tape hinges to attach paper

Excellent thankyou! So many of my non artist friends ask me when I know when a picture is finished but I actually would rather have it slightly under finished rather than overdone! I've had some pics I've not been happy with that I've totally overworked and they've lost all their spontaneity and gesture

Thank you. This is a new technique for me. I have used pastels the same way I do charcoal and apply fixative when I am done. Using them to create paint is going to be fun. Normally I paint with acrylics or watercolor. It's been years since I used oils. Very interested to see what else you come up with.

You are. a very good teacher. Thanks for sharing. If I might put in my two cents worth in way of comment. The trees were very well done I like the fact that they are transparent. You can see the sky and other trees beyond, but I think you did not develop the foreground enough. Looking at the photo the viewer has the sense that he can approach that forest and that is quite interesting. In you beautiful painting, that intimate sense is not there. Still I love what you do and learn from it.

Gorgeous! My favorite part is when you decided to use the warmer light blue color at the base of the sky and I thought oh man, this painting is going to pop! I have troubles with Sky color and this video helped me with that as well. Thank you!

I 'm been in the University,to learn paint..I did buy the material to paint,and the profesor said .'starded" I say . wow..they did teach me..I paint with natural talent..nothing more..get the 100% ,the profesor of ceramic..did now wow to do the anathomy of the face of a woman...this is the cain of profesor in Usa.socialist....we get the worth of teaching..I did buy book, and learn with Bob Ross,and faund at the Tv and learn paint...thank you Helen Van Wyk...

i have worked with pastels but never built as much, going to give it a try. also how do u seal the painting, i dont cause of allergy to chemical sprays...

Thanks for watching. I don't use a final fixative since the sanded paper holds onto the pastel very well. I store them under glassine paper until they can be framed under glass.

Beautiful work! When you started making the leaves at the end did you dip the pastel stick into the alcohol to make sort of an impasto effect? Also, can one substitute alcohol with odorless turpenoid?
