We made it folks!
We have been steadily working this year, bit by bit, towards this portrait study series.
In this long-form tutorial, Caitie runs you through her amazing process of drawing and painting portraits.
As a professional artist, Caitie is commissioned to paint portraits on a regular basis and she happens to love it.
This is the first video of this watercolor tutorial series so we are focusing on painting this in grayscale.
Over the course of the next few tutorials we will start to get funky but we have to start with the basics!

I have to say thank you for this video from the bottom of my heart. For the first time in my life I have painted a portrait that actually resembles the person I’m painting! All down to this video and your subsequent ones which I will also comment on. In this video, your tip about taking a photo of the painting side by side with the greyscale printout was EVERYTHING. Amazing! I will use that method until I’m too old to paint anymore a.k.a. dead. Thank you!

I have only recently started painting but kind of fell into portrait drawing via online zoom sessions in the past year. Doing 2 x 50 min pencil or pen sketches once or twice a week. It was a great way to be productive. Anyway, upshot of it is I'm amazed how quickly my observation has improved (in c. 50 or 60 sketches) & I can now knock out a reasonably good base sketch in a few minutes. Now that I've started painting & am watching these tutorials I'm surprised at the number of experienced artists using lightboxes or tracing, albeit I'm sure in this case it is just to demonstrate the process. Absolutely no issue as ultimately the end result is the main thing. But, for beginners don't sleep on the observation skills as in the long run it will save you time and printer ink.

Absolutely stunning! And yes please to the extra long videos, I need to learn and build confidence in layering and starting with shadows, etc. and building to detail. I always jump too far ahead!

This tutorial was mesmerizing. I love seeing the how the portrait came together. Time was not a factor. I’d watch a longer video. These are really educational. Also, I would have never thought to attempt portraiture with my Peerless sheets. Keep up the great work!

This was great and a big help! Been watercolor painting on and off for a number of years. Have always trouble painting faces with lights and darks and never tried one color. Thanks again.
