I had several requests to 3D scan my 3D pen model of the Great Wide Shark. I don't like to disappoint, so not only did I scan it, I also finished, primed, and painted it! Watch to learn how even the cheapest acrylic paints can result in something great.

Ok guys, I lied a little bit. I've spray painted plenty of models, but this is my first go at *hand* painting. How did I do? Tips?

Nice job. Both models are very fine. I thought first the "original" was a plushy thing. Next time you print 2 halves, you may remove the bottom part in the slicer, just print the perimeter and internal infill. Then sand the bottoms on an plane surface, so you can have an almost invisible minimal gap when glued. Maybe you can cut the part with an extra 0.5 mm on each so you can sand the 0.5mm to an almost perfect joint (easily done in Prusa Sli3er). Voilà, waiting for your next bee-deo

I use wood filler for my figures too. One tip, depends on your wood filler, you can thin it with water and make it viscous enough brush or even dip the figure. Let it dry, sand and redo it until satisfied. Also, your channel and videos are what tip me over and made me seriously considering getting a 3d printer.

If you wanna split a model to make it easier to print, I suggest modeling some holes and pins in it to get it aligned. It helps to hide the seam, so if you're doing something like painting it, you don't have to worry about it. I've done it before with a little Kirby I gave my girlfriend for her birthday and the seam was pretty much invisible!!

Lots of comments here so I bet someone already said this. Wood filler shrinks when the moisture dries out of it. So your print dryer did its job. My tip is to put on more than you need. Don't smooth it when it is wet as it will shrink. Some brands of fillers shrink less than others when drying. Thanks for the video!

Good point, thanks!
@Bananchy

Well if you really want to get into it, airbrushing would be the way to go. But in case you want to keep it sort of basic, you can use multiple watered down layers of paint (let them thoroughly dry before painting the next one) and fine sand afterwards. Or do the same as you already did, but fine sand it after a couple of layers.xD The wood filler suggestion is a great idea, thanks.:)

try XTC 3D its an "auto"-leveling 3d print filler. great if you sand a bunch before, then use it, then do a very light finishing sand (with mesh or scotchbrite). also when using this stuff, don't go heavy handed. Makes an amazing finish if done correctly for spray painting after, your models look almost injection modeled after

13:09 you don't need expensive acrylic to paint good, if you have brush strokes you can use 2000-3000 grit sandpaper and lightly sand away the brush layers until smooth and even, it will take time but it means you can continue on a budget

Nice job. I use the same paints. Bought the 36 pack of variety paints for $20 or so Michael's rocks! they usually have decent affordable variety brush packs too. I think it was 20 assorted brushes and a plastic pallet knife for $7. On sanding, my mom used to manage a small craft store and she brought home a flexible foam sanding pad set that was fantastic for forming to odd shapes and crannies as well as nooks. I keep a small 6" USB desk fan for drying layers faster so I'm not waiting so long between coats.

That is specifically the X-acto #16 scoring blade. It's a great blade that I use for model making because of the size and angle, it really allows you to get into tighter spots and isn't as prone to the tip snapping off like on standard #11.

Practice using "washable" kid's pints that will come off by soaking the figure. Clear satin or matt overcoat when done. Then when you have the techniques figured out for getting a good looking figure, start using the acrylics that do not wash off.

I highly recommend using Rustoleum's sandable filler primer. I find that it produces a lot smoother finish on 3d prints post sanding than other filler primers. Also, I use the same acrylic paint but I water them down a little and apply several layers to achieve a brushstroke-less result.

For when you tried to dry your Shark in your machine and the crack came back (where the wood filler had it filled in) my best guess is that it wasn't your pieces that shrank. I believe Wood filler is used to fill in wood cracks, because it can move and warp with wood; since wood does shrink and expand on it's own, in certain climates and temperatures. Meaning, heads up, that crack may come back if your piece isnt kept in a controlled temperature environment. Hopefully, this won't be the case. Loved the video still and, regardless of the hurdles, you did an awesome job!

I've done a lot of painting on my 3d prints. I find it very helpful to use a hairdryer in between coats to speed things along. This is especially helpful when printing on very small things that contain many colors like miniatures for dnd. Just be careful not to overhead the plastic and warp your pieces of course! ;p

Fun to watch, new to your channel. I really Like the rejected animal idea! A few tips From a painter. Thin your paints, with acrylic just a few drops of water or flow medium will help with the brush strokes even with cheap paint. Look up the dark lining technique it will help the color transitions and making details pop. The cloudy look to the varnish is usually from too heavy or thick of a layer, from humidity, or from it drying before hitting the model (Usually too cold). Spray lightly from 18 inches away another light coat and it can clear up the varnish, but it can also make it worse if you still have any of the other conditions above. Looking forward to more!

Acrylic paint is so good, it's cheaper than something like enamel or oil paints, easy to use, you don't really need some weird toxic solvent to use it, and it looks good, but it doesn't stick to stuff like plastic, although if you do a thick coat it's so satisfying to peel it off
