It's good to see you're doing it right, because A bad paint job is worse than no paint job.... I had a pneumatic inline sander when I was rebuilding my machines. It spanned the low spots really well.
I used to have one but it was not used much and froze up... I was going to buy a new one for this but there really is not that much flat area on the machine, lots of curvy area..
I seem to recall Don saying he was going to paint your Bridgeport for you. 😉👍 I can tell that’s going to look really sweet when it’s all done. I prefer the Bridgeport videos to all others. 👍👍👍🇦🇺
@@10swatkins 😂😂👍 What I have seen of Dons paint work - is pretty impressive. I think he’s more than capable, perhaps he’s just “busy”. I do think Don achieved an awful lot - most of it on his own, & in pretty good time too. His workshop extensions etc were mighty impressive. I don’t know if he has a full or part time job, or if he’s retired, but he sure seems to get a lot done in short order. 😉

I’m semi retired with a lot of time on my hands & I don’t get 1/10th of what you get done. Even your shop is super organised. When you have limited time things seem to always jump ahead of the poor 10EE... :( I'm still sourcing the parts for the electronics and that is keeping it low priority behind the Bridgeport.. I have the two main motherboard controllers now just need to find some other parts because I want to change it from 440 to 220....
I though so too when I first saw that... Looking closer it was a black wooly caterpillar that has come into the shop.... All this video is speed up to 1000% instead of the normal 100%. Those caterpillars have really hatched out around here and you can see about 10 on the highway in just one mile...

I dont know how often you glaze the castings on your rebuilds but a if you add a few drops of fiberglass resin in your mix its really easy to apply really flat and you can acid brush it into tight spots.

What did machine makers use as surface filler before the days of epoxy catalyst activated materials? Car makers used to use plumbers solder, which can be wiped as it half solidifies in a process called "leading".
I'm not sure... I've had several war machines, The Beast is one of them, and the castings looked to be a lot nicer and the machines looked ok with just paint!
Good Eye, Looks like a hairy caterpillar to me, if you slow down the speed so that Steve is working at normal speed, the little fella is reasonably slow and bends in ways most bugs don't.
It’s always a question how much hardener to use for the first batch of the day. Do you know when they started using fillers on castings? What did they use before the advent of two part polyester fillers? Thanks for the video!
Yes, you’ve gone mad. But then my South Bend lathe’s paint can only be described as camo meets Battleship Texas meets Pima airplane graveyard meets oil. But my real question is did you kill the big tree roach that invaded the scene from Stage Right? I think I saw the carcass when you rolled the Venus de Milo back inside. I do not miss tree roaches from my years growing up in Houston.
IT's almost a wild life sanctuary! IT's the country and not a very well sealed building I'm afraid... Last month I killed a 2 foot long snake that was taking a nap in the chip tray of the Axelson 16 inch lathe!
