I have a new appreciation for patience and attention to detail. The work speaks for itself. Any suggestions how to achieve similar results but on a smaller scale? 28 -32mm

Use a very small brush and oil paints with a drop of “Liquin fine detail” mixed in to speed drying. Reaper Miniatures makes some of the best tiny brushes for painting detail.

The video will be great in addition to the photos. I'm confused about using the mineral spirits to blend. And do you seal after blending, or do you just pencil over it? I adore these dapple greys and I'm so excited to see how it's done. I can never hope to duplicate this, but like I said, it's satisfying to know how it's done. I've always wondered how artists like Kate Schick makes such soft looking grey horse's. If I learned that, I think that my mind would be beyond thrilled. I think that some artists are afraid to show people how they create such smooth and realistic colors on their horses. I know I'd never be able to duplicate it, though of course I would try. It's knowing how it's achieved that is the biggest thrill to me. I'd still be sending my horses out to get painted!

Jenn K The mineral spirits help the pencil smooth onto the base color. The pencils are made of pigment in wax. When you use them on paper you can press hard, forcing the color down into the paper's texture. The heat of the friction actually melts the wax to create a rich smooth saturated color. With a light touch like what is done to create the hair by hair look, pencil skips across the surface so the mineral spirits melt the wax creating the soft hair look. Sealing is done after but the spirits dry quickly so you can immediately keep working until you want to seal.

Myla, do you dip the pencil in the mineral spirits as you apply the color?
@MylaPearce
@MylaPearce 7 лет назад
nibbleniks Thank you for your question. I have tried that but the mineral spirits drip down the pencil and make a runny mess. Then I tried just leaving the pencil in the mineral spirits for 20 minutes to see if it would soften the lead. Maybe it needs left in there longer but it did soften somewhat. But then I could not get that nice fine hair look because the pencil tip was too soft and mushy. If you find a technique that works better please share! 😊

So Myla, how do you use the mineral spirits. I must have missed something. :) Thanks in advance!

nibbleniks hey! You dip the brush in mineral spirits, wipe off the excess on a paper towel then lightly brush it over the pencil work to blend it.

I think I chose the worst possible colour to restart horse customs. The horse I based it on is a pinkish dun/grey with reverse dapples and I put in a mane and tail first like an idiot. I am part way there though having managed to get the base coats right I have done a couple of layers of the white hair by hair roaning and am on to the reverse dapples. I got some surgical spirit because I couldn't find mineral oil and bought the Prismacolour pencils you suggested (the first coat hair by hair was watercolour pencils then acrylics with my own special fan brush but decided to give the pencils you used a go...because they can't be worse Lol! If I ever get it finished Myla, I will tag you as I was about to give up and strip him but you made me change my mind. Thanks (although the hand cramp is truly murderous!)

I've honestly never seen this technique before and I'm amazed, it must take months to complete something like this, by chance do you do customs? I've love to know.

For a very matte finish I use Testors Dullcote and for a more satin finish Krylon Crystal Clear Flat.
