Very beautiful, been a fan for a long time. I'm curious, do you paint everything at once or let the layers dry before starting the next step? You always make it look so easy.
I'm 61 and just starting out, I want to be able to paint portraits of my family. You make this appear so simple and straightforward; are there any tips you can give an absolute novice? My main problem with faces is proportion and angle to the light. Don't seem able to get both correct, one of them maybe. but not both.
The easiesg way to start portraits is to drop an image into an online image editor and use colorize mode to reduce the image to color shapes. I purchased an opaque projector to put images on canvas
I'm not a painter so I can't really help you out, but I just came here to say that I think what you're doing is great and very sweet. I hope it goes well!❤️
Not sure if you still need advice or will even receive this message but "The Loomis method" is very good at helping with proportions and different angles.
Him: *casually switches colors in a split second* Me: *has to stand up, go to the sink, and wash the brush thoroughly before finally dipping the brush in a different color.*
Personally I go on instagram and add the reference photo in the story edit (without posting) and use the drop tool (in the bottom left) to copy a couple colors and create my color palette. Sometimes what makes it difficult is the gradient and blend between colors.
For making a caucasian skin tone: Red+yellow Add a tiny bit of blue to neutralize it Add white until you get the desired tone Idk how to make darker skin tones, but I hope this helped some of yall lol
Kirb .o Colors that are complimentary should create the color brown. Yellow and purple, blue and orange, and green and red. You want to use richer colors like blue since it’s a cooler color, you can use it to make the color brown look darker. But make sure it’s the desired color you want.
ALRB❤ yeah that’s so true before i would be darwing a weird nose and all the rest of the face would turn out weird as well but then as i started to watch videos on how to draw and started actually learning to draw it now the whole face seems way better and everything seems in its place
aldino prakasa just try to watch videos and practice drawing it a lot and you’ll get way better by time i always doodle parts of the face that i’m not so good at when i’m bored so i got better without even realizing and as i got to be good at every part of the face now i can draw a face with good proportions
He’s assuming you understand art fundamentals like color theory, value/light, proportions/anatomy, form, and composition. Those are all separate subjects you learn to apply to every art subject not just portraits.
@@giopyui there's a difference between skill and talent. most millenials who have been taught that everybody can become whatever they want and we are all alike,,,,can't tell the difference between skill and talent.
@@hmax1591 Idk what you're trying to get at here but talent doesn't really exist, every artist will tell you that it's just a lot of practice, studying, looking at the art you most enjoy, etc. Nobody is born skilled and yes, everybody can learn how to draw or paint.
I've watched many of the videos by this content creator... And am yet to learn a single usable technique! All his videos do is talk empty ultimately useless words whilst he paints, showing off what seems to be the effortless ease at which he creates unobtainable perfection to anyone at any point in the "learning" process. Ulitmately every video has served as a deterant, leaving me feeling defeated and self doubting and completely the opposite of inspired , encouraged or schooled about ANY actual usable techniques or improvements. And I've been an artist many yeats, so hate to think how discouraging watching might be for begginers !
You were spot on. Your tip made a huge difference. Until I tried your method I was saving eyes, nose and mouth till the end which caused me to paint them in a very loose impressionistic manner. This lead to I could only paint males up until I tried your idea. I drew a quick sketch of a gal on a small canvas pad and within one hour I completed a wonderfully done female image that had all the soft features I had not been able to pull off prior to the change. Thanks a ton.... Mike
Me: Draws an almost perfect sketch Gets the base color While painting the eyeball hand shakes Makes the eyeball bigger than the nose Gets angry and cannot think bcs im dumb And give up
Step 1: Outlines Step 2: Start with difficult things Step 3: Fill it out Step 4: Make the Background Step 5: Make Adjustments Step 6: Regret Everything Step 7: NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. Step 8: It's okay, I'm doing fine Step 9: Bish, no I'm not wtf Step 10: *Cry in gay*
Me:sees vid My brain:oh boy its that time of the year .I tink she needs to paint My hands:o no she doesent last time she forced us to paint like a 2year old child and she cried a week straight
This is one of those things where talent isn't necessary. Time put in is the biggest factor. Everyone you think has more talent than you has probably literally hundreds of hours of more practice
Best advice ever, especially the last one. I never feel that I’m done. There’s always ONE more thing to do. Your suggestion that if “another brush stroke doesn’t enhance, but just makes a change, then it’s probably time to stop” (paraphrased) will be my new mantra.
Kooky Vidz. I'm at the drawing phase too, but I keep hacking away with some cheap paints just for practice. I think practice is the key here. You'll get better the more you do it.
What you said are exactly opposite to what my teacher told me. She always asks us to paint the background first, block colours, then move to details. But to be frank, i like your way better. Blocking colour without outlines is extremely difficult as i always forget the actual layout and eventually end up with a distorted painting. Anyways, thanks for sharing a new way of painting。
Same! I can't find my way through color blocking. But outlines and this method in the video gets me through. I also found other skilled painters do paint this way and the results are as great as those who color block.
Brilliant content once again Alpay, I appreciate all this free content its amazing. While it’s still coming can you maybe do a video of your palette? how you mix your colours and keep them so clean and mudless.
I used to be such a great artist and fell off for years. I am getting back into it.... Thank you so much for fast forwarding what may have taken me a long time to re learn!!!
Hey man just wanted to give you a heads up if you didn't already know, Corridor Crew seems to have used this video in their "VFX Artists React to Bad & Great CGi 13" at 9:42. I couldn't find anything that would credit you so I just wanted to let you know.
The face is the mirror of the mind, the eyes of people reflect the desires of their heart... I guess life is a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see... eyes are very similar to paintings in that regard, if you can say it in words there's no need to paint it... eyes often times say more then words can... PS: Alpay... your voice is just the perfect radio voice. Hearing your voice itself is already pretty cool.
I have subscribed/followed your art and channel for years now and you never cease to amaze me! Thank you very much for all that you show and teach, and all that you do for us fellow artists, such as myself, or even those who are not but just love the flow of things…..please just know you are a gift to this community as well as to the world! Blessings to you young man🙏🏽
BRILLIANT!!! Thank you for this video! I’ve recently started painting again (I tattoo for a living) and this is probably the most informative video I’ve seen to get me back into my flow.
I am a beginner with painting acrylic art, and I absolutely love when google takes me to one of your tutorials for a specific technique. Thank you for your hard work and knowledge!
This was great. I've been struggling with black and white underpaintings (portraiture is not my comfort zone) but this feels much more intuitive. Also I love what you do with deconstruction!
I'm sad because I can't paint but I'm really good at drawing on the sketch book and using different colored pencils and shading. How do I transition from the sketchbook to the canvas? Can anyone provide any tips for me?
Try using watercolor first. Color in your drawings in your sketchbook with it. Make sure you're using the right materials (this doesnt have to be expensive). When you feel like you are ready, start following tutorials on how to use acrylics.
Do you photograph the models yourself or do you take photos from magazines/online etc? How do you deal with copyright? Should an artist even concern themselves with that?
Sir you are a great artist and your artwork are very very beautiful but will you make a separate video on how to mix colours and how to make perfect skin tones ..... Please sir it's very difficult for us and I hope you will definitely help us....
This video seems more a collection of what a beginner should *not* do when painting a portrait. Everything is just the opposite of what a beginner should try for the first paintings (start from details instead of staring from big shapes, painting the background at the end, etc). Still interesting if somebody can learn following these five steps.
Watching you paint all the skin tones was soooo satisfying. I’m trying to figure out how to do that myself. You made it look so easy. Unfortunately the medium I work with doesn’t blend well. If you blend it too much with too many colors it will look muddy, I have to find a way to see where my painting is going in layers instead of being able to blend everything at once. I work in nails with gel polish that needs to be cured. I’ve painted faces but I want to learn how to paint more realistically.
Painting complex areas first makes perfect sense seeing as you're energy and focus are sharp in the beginning and can take a small break being loose while filling out bigger areas
You have the exact philosophy on making art that I finally have now at 28 after quitting art 10 years ago because of my horrendous imposter syndrome. I wish I had found these videos back then, but I’m happy to have them now. 💕
disappointed once again. This is the second video you've done where you don't explain what colors you are using, how you blend them, and the process you use. You really disappoint me.
I understand the feeling but I guess that's not what this video was about. I think this was more about his general approach. There are great tutorials on skin tones, eyes, etc. here on RU-vid 😊👍. Anyway; happy painting.
Why did I take só many years of trying at looking everywhere, bumped into the most complicated elaborated fórmulas for portrait painting before I arrived at this MOST simple answer ??? THANK YOU for your time ❤❤
