Join me on a friends private property rainforest as I paint their driveway plein air. I started painting this one in the evening and completed it the next morning. I used a combination of brushes and pallet knives to create it. Thanks for watching, please be sure to give it a like and subscribe to my channel and feel free to drop a comment.

I was thinking the same thing you said at one point, about everything seeming so...green, and how to differentiate points of interest. Featuring the driveway was a great fix for that and worked out really well. I'm glad nothing wild or crazy happened this time too, although if it had, I know you would have handled it with grace and aplomb as usual. :) Too bad the friend didn't get to see the finished painting in good lighting. Hopefully they'll see the video.

Yeah as soon as you go past a certain point in Australia everything is just sooooo green! Oh me too 😂 I certainly get some adventures out there, this whole trip went pretty smoothly though. Oh it's ok the link has been sent to them so they can watch it in better light 😊

Beautiful is it, Kate you never mentioned your pallet colours
@Kate_Bonnie
@Kate_Bonnie 17 дней назад
@@neilsmith1688 oh I never do, but my standard pallet is titanium white, burnt umber, burnt sienna, ivory black, lemon yellow, cad yellow, crimson, cad red, Phalo blue and ultramarine blue. Sometimes I may as an extra colour or two but more or less that's what I use and mix the rest.

I think you created some wonderful texture in that picture - but I have a question. I'm wondering why you started with the pallet knife. My thinking is that it restricts your underpainting, and I think it leads you to battle more than you have to to get the compositional structure of the piece. Listen - if you're not interested in the sort of 'realism' of old school impressionism, and are going for the more abstracted primitivist imagery of someone like Henri Rousseau, then forget what I say - but if you want to paint not just 'a' bush, but *the* bush in front of you, I would recommend that you use a brush with diluted paint and start by blocking in the most obvious areas of dark (if you squint you'll be able to see the basic shapes a bit clearer) and light. Then you can start in with the pallet knife and smaller brushes. I just watched your 'misty mountains' video and I think again, starting with dilute paint and brush - washing in a misty tone then touching in some vague distant mountain shapes wet on wet (kinda like a loose watercolour technique) would have worked wonders. Then you've got a good base for that lovely pallet work rockiness to jump out from. Anyway, I hope you don't think I'm overstepping the bounds of internet etiquette - or mansplaining where it's not wanted - I just came across your video and just loved your attitude, and if anything I've said is useful to you then that's got to be a good thing I reckon.

Thanks for your comment, I see where you are coming from however I think although most artists do put down a very thin layer any thinner and it would be transparent on the wooden board, I think it looks a little thicker on camera than it actually is. A while ago I used brushes more and didn't really use pallet knives much however I do have a couple of reasons behind the technique I am using, firstly it is much quicker to use a pallet knife and secondly it's my style I think every artist needs something unique to their art and this is what works for me. 😊
@bengreen171
@bengreen171 4 месяца назад
@@Kate_Bonnie oh - I didn't mean to thin it so it becomes transparent - and yeah, it does look quite thick, so if that's an optical illusion, then my bad. I will fight to the death that it would be quicker to use a brush - you just need a bigger brush 🙂 - but you're quite right, the most important thing is you have your own style and of course you should do it the way you feel like doing it. I think you have that with all the different mark making you use to put in all the details, and I don't think the first layer affects that in any way.
@Kate_Bonnie

@bengreen171 it is an optical illusion, only the layer with the leaves is thick. Hahaha those are bigger brushes than I use to use 😂 but yes I agree a big brush speeds things up.... But probably not as much as a big pallet knife 😂 I suppose yes the first layer doesn't effect the above paint much 😊

@@Kate_Bonnie to be fair, I saw some dude the other day using a big old piece of stiff cardboard to drag across a massive canvas. It got a bit soggy, but seemed to have some effect for a while.
