Painting a snow scene in oils

Hi there! Today I am painting a snow scene in oils. I had an art group demo, about painting snow coming up, and wanted some practice - we don't get much snow in Cornwall!
This is a studio alla prima painting that I did in one session at the easel. In my reference photograph there were two figures (and my dog) but I chose not to include them in the final painting. I think they may have helped introduce some colour into the scene but I liked the emptiness of the scene.
Thank you for watching. Please feel free to ask any questions in the 'comments' section.
Bye for now - Andrew

I love these paintings! They are beautiful. I’m very much intrigued with how you used the palette knife and you’ve inspired me to try that. Thanks for the video!

Fantastic! I love this painting! Amazing how you captured the winter scene of trees and snow. Just beautiful! Question- you use quite a small brush. Curious as to your thought on that. Do you feel you get more texture with a small brush or is it just a preference? I'm a beginner - so just wanted your thoughts. Thanks for another great video. You'll do great at your workshop.

Hi Lynette - thank you for watching and I'm really pleased you enjoyed it. I only started using the small rigger brush recently, I find it very useful for making small, less precise marks. I also like it for suggesting tees and branches. As the hairs are quite long it holds a lot of paint which is very useful. The workshop went very well - thank you Best wishes Andrew

@@AndrewBarrowmanArt Thanks Andrew for your reply. I really like how you painted your trees. I'm going to give the rigger brush a go! Thanks again and glad to hear your workshop went well.

I like both paintings. Snow scenes are my favorite to paint since I am originally from snowy New York state. I was a little disappointed that you didn’t put your friend Basil in the first painting! Thanks for a great video.

Must ask: when you use the knife, are you using the tip or the length of the blade.
@AndrewBarrowmanArt
@AndrewBarrowmanArt Год назад
I use the tip, sides and the flat back. They all serve different purposes. I like my palette knife to be quite flexible to achieve these effects

Needed more colour Andrew even though it's a snow scene, sone soft yellows and soft blue greens would have added punch. Also the humans and dog add so much more interest but always a danger there of it becoming too Chtistmas card like. Just my two cents worth, thanks for posting.

Hi Jim - I agree with you regarding extra colour. It has the feel of a very dull snowy day which we do get here more often than sunny snowy days. I did another snow painting a week later and it worked better (and was easier!) with shadows and sunlight

@@AndrewBarrowmanArt !!! The colors in this one are *perfect*! I love this painting! And I’m so happy the figures didn’t get added in. Andrew’s painting has captured those feelings I can’t explain after a fresh and heavy snow when all is transformed, surreal and serene. Punchy colors and people don’t belong here. It is a challenging subject and, at least for me, he’s nailed it. ❤️
