I tried that and the material just sucked it up! Now, it was some cheap stuff but enough for me to look for another solution. The big problem is that the landscape fabric is designed to have water pass-through. So, you need to find a barrier that is thin enough to paint on but thick enough to clog those pass-through impressions that are made for water. The bonus of gesso is it's designed to prime canvas by helping to fill in the space between weaves and leave some 'tooth' behind. Continued...
It looks good, but what is the stuff called? I am not sure what Guesso(?) is. In art school, we primed canvases with some stuff called Gesso (pronounced Jesso). I am not trying to correct you, or split hairs, I just would hate to use gesso, when in fact there is something else out there for this project called Guesso. I have been utterly surprised before :)
Yes, I do remember! I posted a picture of the Toy Story ride (they had cool giant toys). Yes, this ChromaDepth stuff would be the perfect weirdness for your Toy Story theme! Great application.
I got mine in a bulk order with a pro-haunt but here's the good news. I was going to let the kids keep their glasses as a treat but I put a bin out to collect them. Well, call it training from 3D movies but they gave them all back! So, I recommend that you get 20 or so of the plastic framed ones and collect them as they leave the haunt and hand them to the next group. Get the standard (not HD) ones and do a Google search. There seems to be many sources to get them. Hope that helps.
Hi! I'm not sure if you remember (it was a while back) but on the Halloween Forum I was talking about doing a toy store theme for my haunt (my username is Izzio). Watching this video give me an idea... I could use the chromadepth paint in my "toy store"! Thank you so much for this video!!!!
Ok cool. Thank ya Ma'am! Ya i live about 30 minutes from the Darkness (on the IL side) I was at Transworld but i decided to save my money for my own haunt instead of paying what the darkness was asking to do the behind the scenes tour. Maybe next year!! Another idea i'll share.. I'm making an evil ice cream man concession stand.. I'm using spray painted insulation foam to create the fake ice cream. ;) It also works well for fake guts!
Hey Terra, I was just wondering how much paint is used. I will be painting my 3D panels on wood. I have about 10 - 15 panels to paint. Which colors did you use the most? and did you just buy quarts or gallons?
It's called DeWitt Weed Barrier Pro. I get it in the 6' x 300' roll. I see at Grainger that it looks like they carry it. Item# 1ECB9 - that looks like the same stuff I get at the local nursery here. Love your mouth idea! I saw a version of that at The Darkness. They had the lips red and then successive layers of teeth going from orange to yellow to green to blue. Any projector will do as long as it blasts big enough - or you have a long enough room.
Great question. I tallied my last go-around so I can also better plan time-wise. From concept to completion it takes me on average 10 hours per panel. This includes designing them on the computer, building the haunt panel itself, gesso, outlining, color-blocking, second outlining and shading and any finishing touches.
I feel confident you can. They are 6' feet wide so worse case you'd have to fold it in half and that might leave a crease. But, if you rolled it up like a carpet, should transport well. I can't be 100% certain though. Never done that yet.
This video popped up again. I am retired living in Northern Nevada now. Doing my second annual chromadepth yard display. I started using Nova color paint. It's about $ 30. A gallon cheaper than DayGlo.
Very cool :) I'm just now finishing up some new panels. I've learned a faster technique since this video. Namely, just block out the gesso and use the projector to spray paint the black outlines. Damn quicker. Have fun with your panels and holler if you have any questions.
I've painted about 25 panels. I bought the gallon containers of blue, green, yellow, dark yellow, orange and red. Bought quarts of white and purple. I have half left of blue and red. 2/3rds left of green and dark yellow. Lots of orange, yellow, purple and white left.
Sure. They are PVC pipes with a string of flickering lights for the bulbs. The bulbsare held in place with 'donuts' cut out of strofoam. Hot glue is used for the wax drippings. Spray painted and you are done. There are more detailed instructions at my blog. Look for Terra at HalloweenForum.
Hello Scaryladyvideos, I was watching your videos and I have to say you do some great work. I was wondering what are all materials you used to build these amazing walls? Do you staple the fabric to plywood? Also where did you buy all the materials from? Is the paint black light or florescent? Do you have to water the paint down a little or just use it straight out of the can? I was thinking about attempting to make a few walls myself. Thanks!
Good questions. I have made about 30 panels and painted about 22 of them. Considering the paint used, fabric and wood they worked on my calculator to be about $15 a panel. Paint is from Wildfire, gesso is a recipe I made with Sculpt or Coat and ceiling paint, fabric was from the local nursery and wood from Home Depot. I had to buy two airbrushes (didn't include that cost in my estimate) and already had the compressor. It is a significant investment but gets cheaper as you make more.
I just so happened to have a pair of Chromadepth 3D glasses on my desk [thankfully! The other 49 pair were in my closet a good 10 feet away from where I'm sitting :p], and WOW. You have taken the concept to its extreme!! I know the TOT's will LOVE it! What will you bring us next?
Yea if you wouldn't mind me asking. What is the exact fabric you use? Also would any projector work for blasting an image onto the fabric to paint. A cool idea i had was to paint a big open vampire mouth onto a wall made of osb and then project the mouth drawing onto the wall panel and paint it on. That way it would be like walking thru a monster mouth to get to the next haunt scene. Again thanks for all your replies and comments. I enjoy your work!
Any kind of fluorescent paint will work. I used Createx Fluorescent paint before. It was okay but wasn't getting the knock-out fluorescing I needed. Also look at Day-Glo - cheaper and I hear it's really good.
I have watched most of yor videos, i have to admit you do some awsome work! But i have to ask how much did the panels cost you the paint, fabric everything you need to do the project? and where you got your materials?
I use the gesso stil but now I just roughly paint the gesso in and then use the projector to spray paint the black outlines. Before I had gesso'd in everything but the black outlines. I hope you understand what I'm saying. If not, I can explain it another way.
Hello this tutorial knocks it out the park and some. But after reading through the comments I was wondering, how many hours does it take you to finish 1 panel (approximately); so I can get an idea of how much time I need times the amount of panels I think I need to finish my project before Halloween?
@SIMPLEPLANROCKS22 Sounds like a terrific room. You could also wear a costume with the same design. Don't move until they are right on you. Great scare.
@Scaryladyvideos The first layer 'sacrifices' itself to seal in the perforations. Then you need two more layers to get good coverage and a great surface for the fluorescent paint. I recommend Utrecht Professional Acrylic Gesso. It will need to be thinned to be paintable onto the panel. Hope that helps :)
@willdurden Used two airbrushes. Iwata HP-BCS for main painting and an Iwata HP-BH (but I recommend the HP-CS instead). You can buy them online and I found the BCS even at Hobby Lobby. I used WildFire fluorescent paint. Any fluorescent paint will do.
@hulkarmy25 That's okay. I got mine from a big nursery here that also sells to pro landscapers. Grainger also carries it. Here's the specs for it: DeWitt Weed Barrier, Pro 6300, 6 Ft x 300 Ft, Polypropylene Material, Color Black, For Use On Landscapes
thats cool i wanna do like a black and white checkerd room witha strob light cause i have some ideas of what i could do or maybe black and red ill think about it
is there any other kind of paint i can use but would show up ok in blacklight? that paint is 150 bucks for a gallon of one color? yikez haha but very cool
I watched this with chromadepth glasses on on a big screen... really cool.. odd technology and the glasses are a bit too expensive but a neat other form of 3d.
Thanks :) I use DeWitt Weed Barrier Pro landscape fabric and the walls are furring strips and the fabric is attached with 1" pieces of fabric and stapled. I will be making a video in the next month on how I build these walls and put them up in the garage. I used WildFire fluorescent paint I got from Blacklight . com I did water the paint down to go through the airbrush about 50%. If you go to my home forum I have a thread that answers many more questions you may not have thought of.
I'm totally going to try this, thanks so much for the video!! Just one small issue, it's not "guess-so" it's pronounced "jess-so". It's an Italian painting term.
@Scaryladyvideos yea that is the good part cause blending in wwith the surounding area is good i use the dummy effect to scare people i may try a chain saw but for now i am working with my flying crank ghost an so on
@@paulbennett2619 You attach a projector to the computer via cable. The projector will show whatever is on the screen of the computer. I created the images using Photoshop. Here is the Chromadepth playlist that may also answer more fully any question you may have as well: ru-vid.com/group/PLCCWtZgQsJM7n2cJ0KPQR2xLeZ46Hqjci
It does and is a lot of fun just walking around the house looking at things. But, not all colors really separate out and so it seems a little flat. That is why I use simple visuals using the coloring stacking illusion specifically. Then using florescent paints the colors pop out even more. You get the same effect wearing the glasses looking at colored LED lights. Hope that explains if better for you.
@@bleepyreblex6208 Should have a decent effect but it wouldn't be as obvious as if you were using florescent lights. But, should still be fun to look at.
+cdufa I'm guessing not. But, I haven't tested it myself. I painted some paints on plastic tarp and I could peel it off. The test should be if you don't 'try' to peel it off - would it?
It helps to separate a color so they lift off of the other color. You can do no black borders but the colors meld together so you don't get that clear separation. I guess you'd have to decide what is more important - artistic impact or depth impact. Look at my video with your glasses on to see how the depth illusion improves as the black is applied.
Hello Scarylady! I am looking for someone to theme a 3D haunt I am building. It has more or less 300m2. Do you know someone who wants to come over Belgium to theme this 3D haunt? Thank you
Thank you and sorry I didn't respond earlier (was on vaca). . I used fluorescent paint with blacklights. You don't need that to make the illusion work with the ChromaDepth glasses as it just using the different colors (red, yellow, blue, etc.). But, since this is a haunt it is a lot more fun to use the fluorescing colors in a blacklight room. I gave the kids a 50 cent pair of glasses as their trick or treat gift with the option of a return bin if they didn't want them. Surprisingly, most were returned. Hope that helps :)
No need to be sorry, :) curious would black plastic work also? Where did you get the glasses for 50 cents each, the cheapest i see is from chromatek 50 at 75 cents each. Great job by the way, I really want to incorporate this technique into our haunt.
lol ok sorry.. what airbrush are you using.. i hear harbor freight has a 20 dollar one that some haunters use, so sounds like you have a few different brush tips for finer detailing
Black plastic doesn't work for more complicated designs because if you do a thicker design the paint will eventually flake off. I was part of a bulk order from another haunt and I had to buy 1000 pairs to get that 50 cent price per pair of glasses. As for how much paint... depends on if you thin it. I thin it by half with water so that helps it stretch. I'd say plan on a 8-16 oz of paint per panel. To help not have to buy so many colors remember you can take yellow and mix with blue to get green, red and blue to make purple...etc. I like the Iwata airbrushes and have never used the Harbor Fright ones. Here is a link to a full written tutorial that may also help answer some more questions for you: www.halloweenforum.com/tutorials-and-step-by-step/119734-improved-painting-3d-haunt-panels.html#post1334868
It is the stuff you used in art school, gesso. I feel a bit like a dork. I never went to art school and I'm from Chicago. Us Chicagoans just say it like its spelled. heh.
Sorry this took so long to get answered. I live in Texas and was affected by the freeze. (Glad to be back among the living). Anyways.... as to your red question. That is the holy grail for florescent paint companies (true red). That is why I turned to WildFire paint. It had the deep red I was looking for.
I have to add to that comment and say that i would use osb or something for that particular panel because it would have a doorway cut in it and the mouth drawing around the doorway.. LOL
@Yaoiloverel Please see my reply to you dated a week ago. I accidently didn't hit reply to you personally so you may not have seen the response. Sorry about that :(
